OVERVIEW

The TASCAM DIGITAL PORTASTUDIO DP-32SD is one of the best and most affordable ways to remove the mind-numbing glow of the computer screen from personal recording. It's safe to say, that after decades of manufacturing and transforming Portastudios, TASCAM has revolutionized the series once again. Employing 8 combo 1/4" - XLR inputs with +48V Phantom Power, 32 tracks (8 mono, 12 stereo) the ability to select between stereo and mono and an affluence of other key features, TASCAM DIGITAL PORTASTUDIO DP-32SD is an obvious choice for multi-channel home recording. The DP-32SD is just like its brother the DP-32, but without the built-in CDR/RW drive for recording media.

Utilizing SD/SDHC media ensures confident recording, free from shock due to loud sounds
The DP-32SD adopted use of SD/SDHC media. SD/SDHC cards provide secure shock resistance due to the absence of any rotary mechanism. File format of the DP-32SD is FAT 16 or 32. You can find the recorded files on your computer when connected via USB.

The last 12 faders are selectable between MONO and STEREO
The DP-32SD has 12 selectable tracks between MONO or STEREO. These tracks provide more flexibility. For example, set to STEREO for recording synthesizer, or set to MONO when recording guitar or vocal. Not only that, you can create ideal settings for each track. (set #9 to #12 STEREO, then set #13 to #22 MONO) If all tracks are set to MONO the DP-32SD becomes a 20-track multi track recorder.

21 faders eliminates layer structuring
The DP-32SD, even with the high number of tracks and features is one of the easiest multi-track recorders in the market to use. The DP-32SD has 20 track-faders and one master fader. You can control any track with ease.

The 3.5" full-color LCD and the self-illuminated buttons increase visibility
The DP-32SD has a 3.5" LCD screen and select self-illuminated buttons, making it easy to view your entire creative process. Some of the illuminated buttons include (SOURCE, SELECT, REC, MUTE).

12 rotary knobs linked to the LCD to help increase easy operation
The DP-32SD has employed rotary knobs to control qualities such as EQ, Effect Send and other related features.

Same functions as the DP-32, but with convenient SD media.

If you are looking for massive onboard effects, infinite ad nauseam tweaking, and more automation than r2d2 look elsewhere this unit is not for you!

If you want a hassle free, reliable, durable, portable and musical unit then read on.

I have had the unit long enough to make a competent review of it.
I bought the SD variant because I did not want a cd drive since it involves moving parts and moving parts is bad at least in my book :).

Using the unit is pretty straight forward you can take it out of the box and use it as an 8x8 recorder the first time you use it like an old 424 or similar tape machines.
My only real complaint about the unit is the manual. if you take the time to figure it out and maybe watch a couple of tutorials on it. It is not difficult to pickup.

Most of the projects I have done so far I actually mixed down on the machine then exported the resulting wave file to my ipad (final touch app) to master it.
I have to say having a slider for each channel is refreshing on mix down, and the virtual tracks are a really nice feature. This was the original reason I chose this unit over the R-16. I made great use of them on one project where I was tracking drums and the client wanted to have different takes side by side.

As other reviews have stated this unit does not have a lot of effects horsepower.
I would agree but for recording they are more than adequate.
And the guitar effects are passable though I only use them for tracking not recording a whole band live as you are limited in simultaneous effects.
I really like having the noise gate on all incoming inputs.
Also you can bounce a track or tracks and add effects at that point.

When doing mix down I usually use an external reverb in conjunction with the internal reverb. I personally don't use a lot of effects post anyway.

The preamps are very clean yet they seem to have the tascam (warmth) to them.
I do use a single tube preamp sometimes when tracking vocals.

I have paired the unit to my Mac-mini for file tweaking and transfer.
But I built a decrepit old Linux FTP box with 4 big cheap hdd's for archives.
As you can generate an incredible amount of data with this guy.

Projects completed with unit at time of review:
I have cut several good tracks for myself.

Recorded:
A string quartet. ( a paying gig)
A pipe organ concert. ( got rave reviews on this)

Produced: Jazz trio project

Produced:
several songs for a hip hop act.
Including doing the drum loops for stage show.

Produced/Recorded the neighbor kid's speed metal group.
Could've used 12 inputs on that one but hey it worked.

Recorded a series of ambient loops for commercial client.

And several more projects in the process right now.
Unit paid for itself twice over in the first month.

In final if you are tired of computer hassles and just want to make/record music.
This is the best machine for the money hands down.

Musicians friend took very good care of me on this purchase.

After a few weeks of recording on this machine, I started getting clicking and popping noises in the tracks. I changed SD cards thinking that was the problem, but it just kept getting worse. When the popping started showing up in the mixdown track, I called Tascam tech support. After I explained the issue to the tech guy, he told me Tascam was aware of this problem and there would be a new "firmware update" to solve this issue (which apparently only happens when doing 24bit recordings). I inquired when the update would be available, but he couldn't answer that question. He offered no other solution to the problem. My solution to this problem is not to buy another Tascam product!

NOT like dp32 but without cd burner. it DOESN'T HAVE MIDI either. if you record at 24 bit you get pops and clicks. called tascam tech support. they said its a KNOWN ISSUE when recording at 24 bit. all you can do is record in 16 bit and WAIT for firmware update. there is no eta for a update and he didn't know for sure if they are working on it. all other dp models discontinued. I had to pay to send back

I had previous porta studios and was planning to go the PC recording route or stick with a porta studio. When DP 32 SD hit the market I stayed with this format. I'm a musician not a sound engineer. Yes, there is a learning curve, but you can produce great recordings on this machine. Using a SD card for data makes sense as you can transfer files to your PC easily and burn a finished product to a CD. An MP-3 or ITunes. I love plugging in my guitar directly to the board and using the built in effects. I recommend this porta studio for the home recording musician.

Comments about Tascam DP-32SD Digital 32-Track Portastudio:

I grew up with Recorders like this one and in a time where you could buy huge all-in-one recorders similar to this for even professional recordings. Now most home set-ups are computer based and you never even touch real faders.

This one was a little difficult to figure out at first (mainly the effects and EQ assignment) but if you take the time to sit down with the user guide, or search some videos on YouTube it starts to make a lot of sense. It is versatile enough for somewhat complex recordings while being simple enough to have a no-nonsense feel. The SD card it came with is much to small in my opinion so buy a 32g SD Card to thrown in there.

I recommend it for anyone used to all-in-one recorders or a budding musician who wants to record and be able to tote it around to different locations.

Had an Old Tascam, New at the time, Cassette Track... For the time it was fantastic. I knew this Tascam product would also be fantastic and perfect for what I need.

I record all the different band instruments on separate tracks... Drums, Keyboards, Bass, Synth, background vocals, some guitar, mix to the data card then accompany with me live vocals and lead or rhythm guitar.

This is awesome... I know today more tech musician do a lot with computers... for me this is the real deal
