this 4 track is a great recorder. some others might not know how to hook it up to yheir stereo and duel cassette recorders. its simple and works great. i hooked my mics so my mixer for drums, it sounds good. i run the playback through the mixer so i have high and low such features. its pretty good, dont listen to the 14 yearolds that have to use cheap crap to record, although its pretty good now were gettin more seriouse, i hate to bail on tascam, but were gonna get fostex Mr8 soon! great for garauge bands containing 3 musicians(guitar/singer, bass, and drums, please dont start bands with 20 or more people!!!!! great recorder! buy it now.

i've had this product for probably closer to 2 1/2 years. i decided to wait to write a review because i was unsure if this thing would even hold up this long. basically this 4 track is just something to record ideas on so you don't forget them later. that's IT. don't expect to cut demo's with it or impress anyone. it says in the description (atleast it did?), it's just an idea collector for songwriters. so before you buy it, realize that it's just like a home tape recorder with some PAN and some VOLUME fixtures. other than that, there are no effects. just enough to get your music on there. the value of this i rated kind of low. i'm not sure if it's my cord, or what, but the input dosen't work on it, rarely at that. whenever you plug something into it it won't work. so therefore i can't record. i have heard that is a common problem, so be cautious of that, and also i have heard the buttons stick on it alot. it won't last long, but if you're temporarily recording ideas or want a start and you're a kid, buy it. otherwise, go digital. it's much more efficient and cheaper in the long run.

Good for starters

By Anonymous

I've had this for a few years now, and overall I like it a lot. There's really no features here, it's just a 4 track recorder for a low price. If you know what you're doing, you can make decent demo recordings with it.However, if you want to record something and you want it to sound pretty good, I'd save a little more money and get a digital 8 track recorder. The fact that this recorder uses cassettes makes that background white noise inevitable. So yea, if you need something cheap that you can quickly make demo recordings with, this is what you want. Otherwise, go for something a little better.

I've had my po1 for over 2 years now. One of the tracks won't record anymore(Oh well). Easiest piece of equipment I've ever used to multy track my ideas.Great product for the price.

Awesome

By Timmy-99YKH

I bought this two years ago, just to record some rough demos. I've since upgraded recording, but this thing was great while i had it. If you just need an idea collector of just need to throw together a few tracks then this is great for the value. You obviously aren't going to be cutting an album with this thing. This thing is still a working and vital piece of gear in my arsenal. I use it to ghetto sample tapes since it has an output. I just line it into my current recording system and hit play.

Cheap, Simple, Tough,and effective.

By J-Dub

I bought one of these things about 7 years ago. Me and a couple buddies used it for a year or two recording simple demos and such. Seven years later, its still there half of the knobs and buttons are broken off, the plate that covers the cassete is long gone and the thing has an inch thick layer of crud and beer on it.But.It still works perfectly. I have since bought another one and I am satisfied with the recording quality. I mean comeon.its a four track tape recorder. I give it a thumbs up all the way.

bad inputs

By Mustarlos

from fontana, ca

I have owned this for a little less than a year. The input jacks for the mic and headphones are broken, you have to play with the cable to get it to work. This has happend on 2 different tascam portastudios MFP01's the exact same problem. Other than that it sounds great. The sound is actually pretty decent. But inputs are garbage.

meh

By skrewfladers

Great to just goof around on and learn but not much practical recording options. Low quality both sound and duarblility. After about a year of use the #2 track button is stuck so I now have a three track recorder. At about 6 months after purchase the right side of the headphone went out, so I can no longer pan to the right. Over all I'd suggest getting a better unit or just going digital.

Best at its price

By El Tascam-o

from Portugal

I find this device wonderful. The simplicity of the whole thing is its best part. Put the tape, plug the cables, start the machine and push REC and you're on! The sound is low-fi, but if i wanted digital pure sound, i would buy a decent device. This is strictly for fun! the pan function works really well and it is very useful. With this unbelievable price, what do you want more?!

easy ,easy home recording!

I have owned this tascam for over a year. I use it very simply. A Shure SM57 mic and my Martin guitar I record straight vocals and guitar at the same time. Then I will lay a guitar lead on the second track some backup vocals on 3rd and 4th track. The sound quality is decent The mic matters. Buy a Shure SM57, it picks up everything and vocals sound great. I also use this to record live band rehearsals with drums and a couple guitars and vocal through a PA. It's great to capture ideas during a jam. It's old school but great for the money!!!!

I thinks its great!

By ThatDamnKid

from Taylorsville KY

I think its great if you know how to work it. if you own it and you keep fudging up the tracks put some head phones in the back jack and there you go! the mic jack has its issues when trying to record vocals, but other than that it works great!
