I have never seen, been around, or in any way used a recording device such as this before I got the Porta 02 MKII a week ago. I must admit that being an absolute begginer, I was nervous about entering the musical arena known as "Home Recording," thinking that it would be an insanely difficult bull to manage. However, being a teeneager with nothing to do and some hard-earned bucks itching to be spent, I decided to go ahead with taking the plunge. I spent two hours reading and familiarizing myself with all the controls of this product before going for my first recording. Luckily, I had some speakers with all the right outputs (AUX for two speakers), but it now turns out that I need to get a tape deck so that I'll be able to hear tracks 3 and 4 on a normal tape player. The sound quality of this machine is quite good, there are few enough controls for it to be simple to operate, yet enough to get the exact sound that a down-to-earth musician would require. Some parts seem to be a little flimsy, so I don't recommend the Porta for uncoordinated people. But you could risk it if you want. Overall, great recorder for a great price that brings sack-fulls of joy into my heart and smiles to my (ugly) face whenever I use it. I also recommend purchasing the Tascam "Getcha Going Portastudio Starter Pack" because it certainly got me going and will most definitely do the same for you.

My Portastudio has seen a lot of use, I mean A LOT of use. But that was over 10 years ago when cassettes were still sold in your local record shop. It is definitely a rugged piece of eqpt. I have dropped it off desks on accident numerous times, and all that really came of the abuse was the cassette cover broke off. And it still worked fine for another 4 years. The quality of recording is eh, but it's a freaking 4 track, what do you expect. However, I would really not recommend picking this up because you can get so much more in a digital recorder for a few bucks more. Although it is analog...

Very good, I have it here in Brazil

By PUNK_Inc.

from São Paulo SP - Brasil

Pros

  • Excellent audio quality

Cons

  • Difficulty Finding K7tape

Best Uses

  • Bass Sampler Drum

Use to record bass lines and guitars, perfect, what pleases me is the hiss of the tape, use the bass lines for the production of rap, I'm also experimenting with ESI 4000 sampler turbo, the sequences of batteries, also supreendeu me perfect in synthesizers also surprised me, the voices gave an air of dirt, to rap, this is what I need.

Good if you want to get back to SIMPLE!

So I am actually well into digital recording, but found I was experiencing burn out from all the talk of converters and preamps and the like...to the point that I had had it. I decided I wanted something to record on that was completely different, and totally analogue...so that if it broke, I wouldn't lose my music, and it wouldn't crash on me. All I have to say is that I got exactly that.HOWEVER, I will say that this unit has a bad hiss (besides the tape) built in somewhere in there that just doesn't shut up, no matter how low your headphone monitor is. I suggest that if you don't have the stomach for that, look for something else. Otherwise, it's no frills, back to basics recording on a unit with ok build and just enough to still be really creative. And you won't have to concern yourself with bitrates, sample rates and worries about file compression or dithering, bla bla bla...Try it out.

All things Considered

By Timmayyy

from St. Louis

O.k. Chances are, if you're getting this thing, you either A. Are just doing music as a hobby and want to keep it cheap and simple or B. Like me, it's too much work to turn on $3000 worth of your digital gear and you just want to lay down that killer riff you though up while watching southpark, and add a drum machine and bass part, to call up at a later time, when it's time to record it for mass consumption. And that's all this thing is good for, I think that's what it was built for, but for that purpose I don't think it can be beat. Remember there is NO EQ on here, so unless you're PRINCE or somebody, it aint gonna work for a serious demo, or album.

Great little recorder - Tascam Porta 02 Mk 2

By HKMan

from Albany, GA

For it's price, this is a great little 4 track recorder. Nothing real fancy but all you need if you are a multi-instrumentalist like me and just wanting to have some fun listening to your own compositions. My vintage Vistalites sound great to me - just run a few mikes to the PA head and speakers and then record to the recorder with one separate microphone. Drums really sound OK not miked too - just lay the mike on the floor between the bass drum and hi-hat and most drums are picked up pretty good. Guitar, bass and keys will need their own effects as this has none and no way to patch in but HEY! Look at what it cost. And it is so simple to operate - you'll be recording in no time - I didn't even have to read the book first.I recommend this recorder to anyone just wanting to have a little fun and is not ready to spend big bucks for a decent simple recorder.

Excellent Introduction to Home Recording

By Robert-2t2KA

from Northern California

I had this machine for a few years without really knowing what to do with it. So much faster than starting a computer if you have an idea, and are afraid of losing it. I have recorded over 20 cassette tapes with this machine and it is still running pretty damn strong. The tape cover came off a month ago and today the rca jacks are getting loose, but besides that a classic machine. I have owned for over 7 years.

Simple Enough Huh?

Yeah,I know...you've been fooling around with an instrument and think that you can play. And with this price you can. Trust me this product delivers beyond expectation. I bought my Tascam about four months ago and it has been fantastic. I record my own songs, of the dare I say "indie" persuasion, and they come out sounding great. I'm on the verge of releasing some tunes and each one came from this recorder. I just bought a SM57 and some cables and was set. The only problem is that you have to go back and master the tapes, I use my friends computer, or a tape player...whatever, go buy this!

Going to get one soon

By Make Mine Country

from Green Valley, IL

I heard this at a friends house in was very impressed with the sound that is produced. The only thing I wish they would have put in an XLR input. But I'll get a cable or adapter and I think it's going to make a nice addition.

Great value

By MurphD

from MILTOWN

For starting out, the Porta 02 is the perfect recorder to learn on. Most other 4-tracks do not allow you do record more than one input at a time, but the Porta 02 allows for two simultaneous inputs. I was initially disappointed that the volume control for each track was not a slider, but the knobs are very precise and easy to use. The pan is quite responsive and the rest of the features are straightfoward. It has a short learning curve so it is great for beginners like myself. with the line out I run it into the computer to save and put the finishing touches on in Adobe Premier.

Good for DEMO Recordings...

By fnaguitarplayer

from Nitro, West Virginia

It's alright... I like digital recording better. I've had mine for about 2 years now, still use it some. Noise is terrible, It's not from the tapes, there is alot of noise with nothing plugged in, or anything turned up. It's good for what i call "practice recording" or just fooling around. I use my computer now. save your money and get the tascom DP-01, my dad has it, it is awesome. This is good for beginner recordings. If you have a good noise gate, than BUY IT NOW!!1
