Once you are done recording and mixing your track, the work isn't over just yet. The music needs to be mastered. This means you need to create a source from which copies of your music will be made from. This can be a CD-R, master tape, or some other format such as a DAT. A typical mastering chain might include some compression, to make sure that the dynamics across the track(s) are uniform, and on specific frequencies if they are too loud or quiet. This is known as multi-band compression. Some light EQ may also be necessary, especially if you are intending to press your songs onto vinyl where it is important that your tracks aren't too bass-heavy, as that may cause the stylus to skip. A final step may be to add some limiting to a track which is a trick to make your master sound louder. Sounds expensive, but the good news is Musician's Friend has all the Music Mastering Software you may need.
