OVERVIEW

TUSQ XL Fender Style Slotted Nut (PQL-5000-00) is a replacement nut for Fender guitars.

Finally, the breakthrough you've been waiting for. Now you can have it all - the great tone of TUSQ, classic good looks AND permanent lubrication. If you love the look of a vintage white nut, but you keep going out of tune when you bend strings or use your tremolo, then TUSQ XL is just what you need.

TUSQ XL is designed to boost guitar tone and performance. This precision engineered nut is made with a specially formulated material which couples the strings' vibrations to the neck and brings out the hidden harmonics and richness in every note. It is based on the highly resonant TUSQ man made ivory, but is impregnated with Teflon to improve the tuning performance of the guitar.

If you have an acoustic or vintage guitar, you owe it to yourself to hear the difference a TUSQ guitar replacement nut, saddle and bridge pins make. Compared to standard materials such as bone, Micarta or Corian, you'll hear more harmonics with every note you play when you use the TUSQ replacement nut on your guitar.

TUSQ is a proprietary material which is precision engineered under high pressure and heat. It is specifically formulated to deliver the right frequencies with the optimum transfer rate to the top of your guitar every time. Because of the way the TUSQ replacement nut is made, it is a consistent material that is rich in tone and harmonic content.

TUSQ has quickly become an important tone performance tool for some of the world's most renowned guitar manufacturers, luthiers and playing professionals. The TUSQ replacement nut has rich tone and sustain, without the inconsistency found in ivory, bone and other natural materials. Bone and ivory have hard and soft spots (grain) throughout each piece, hampering consistent transfer of vibrations to the guitar top. TUSQ guitar nuts, saddles and bridge pins are designed to transfer the right frequencies more efficiently from the string to the guitar body. Acoustic guitars come alive. Electric guitars will get a brighter sound and increased harmonic content.

TUSQ XL offers vintage looks and permanent lubrication.

FEATURES
  • Has a crystal clear-bell like high-end and big open low-end
  • Laboratory-proven to enhance harmonic content (up to 200% over other materials)
  • Engineered for maximum vibration transfer
  • Permanent lubrication
  • Used by the world's finest guitar manufacturers
  • Consistent quality from piece to piece and within each piece
  • No flat or dead spots that can be found in bone or ivory

I've used Tusq nuts on many of my guitars and finally decided to try the XL version on my 57 RI Strat because of its teflon infusion which eliminates the need for lubrication. I do a lot of bends and some heavy whammy bar dips and pulls for some tunes and the guitar stays in tune very well. The tab found on the bottom of the nut is to accommodate wider radius necks, for vintage 7-1/4" just trim it off and you're good to go. The nut fit my Strat perfectly and the roughed in slots aligned exactly with the nut I removed. You will need to have a repairman file the slots to their proper depth or you can do it yourself if you have a set of luthier files. This is a great product that does all it says, increases note definition, files and sands like bone, and does not require lubrication. If you are looking for a replacement, I highly recommend the Tusq XL.

If you haven't cut a guitar nut before you should note that since it's preslotted so you are taking a gamble that the string spacing will work for you. You will have to file the slots to the correct height anyway so IMO it's generally not really worth going with a preslotted nut. Cutting the radius can be a pain though, so I opted for this over a flat bottom blank thinking I would save myself some time. I could not find a Tusq nut that was radiused but unslotted.

For my MIA strat with a soft V neck the string spacing was too narrow - not so narrow that you couldn't make a go of it but enough that it ended up in the drawer instead of the guitar. Checked it against a MIM tele and it seemed to match the factory string spacing so YMMV.

As far as material goes it was easy to shape. Tonal differences weren't huge but they are noticeable. A bit brighter and thinner than the synthetic bone it was intended to replace. Between the spacing issues and personal tone preference I ended going with an unbleached bone blank. It's more work to shape but in the end I preferred that to both the synthetic bone the guitar came with, and this composite. Cheaper too.

Comments about Graph Tech TUSQ XL Fender Style Slotted Nut:

It is VERY hard to figure out from the online descriptions which nut will fit standard guitar models.
Hint to manufacturers and retailers: be more specific with measurements and models.
Anyway, I have a 2008 Road Worn Mexican Telecaster. I did not know if the original nut had a notch or not, but turned out it didn't, so I had to file this notch off the nut, pretty easy to do carefully. Very carefully tapped the old nut out from the side with a small round wood dowel. No need to glue new nut. It was a tighter fit than the original and I had to gently tap it in with a small rubber mallet. But I did not need to cut or sand anything.
Result is the string intonation and tone problem I had is gone and the string vibrates freely and clearly.
But the nut sticks out just a hair on either side of the neck, even though it said if fits Fender models...needs to be more specific. I am not filing it off as I want to keep the original rounded edge.

Comments about Graph Tech TUSQ XL Fender Style Slotted Nut:

2011 fender USA special telecaster has always buzzed. A local guitar shop shimmed the stock nut, reducing the buzz by ~50%. But some buzz remained. After installing the TusqXL nut, the buzzing is finally gone. What a relief!

As far as installation goes, I did it myself by following You-tube video instructions. The original nut came out pretty easy with hammer-woodblock method. It took about 30 minutes of sanding to get a good fitup. I used 600 grit to go slow and carefully, 220 grit would speed up the process. 1st fret string height is a little tall, so some fine tuning might be required, but even before fine tuning I enjoy playing this guitar a lot more - the buzzing drove me batty!

I don't often write product reviews, but due to the effectiveness of this product and relative ease of installation (compared to what I was expecting anyway), I want to encourage someone else that's on the fence to just go for it!

I needed a replacement nut when my original one broke.
There was a bit of sanding and shaving of the nut to make it fit in the slot which was not a big deal.
I am also now getting a sitar like acoustic harmonic on the open G string that I believe to be the cut angle of that particular slot which I have to work on.
Bottom line with just about any nut. Don't expect it to be a plug and play situation. Adjustments will be needed to make it right so be prepared for that.

Contrary to many other reviews, this did not work on my squier strat. Slot spacing way too far for squier strats. 6th and 1st strings are on the edge of the fretboard, making pull-offs impossible.

Comments about Graph Tech TUSQ XL Fender Style Slotted Nut:

I bought this for my Fender mexican tele, and WHOA, I'm in love with Graphtech's tusq series. I had previously bought a new nut for my Epiphone SG and noticed a very big difference. With the fender, the change wasn't as monumental, being that the telecaster is already a great playing guitar, but I still noticed a difference.

For the price to quality ratio, you can't beat it. Unless something crazy happens to it or they improve the design in the future, I'll probably never change out this nut again.

The only stiff I have against it is that it takes some very precise sanding to really get it snug in the slot. When you're installing it, always take away small layers and then check it after each time. That is the key to getting this nut to fit snuggly; patience and precision. Don't be intimidated, because it's not difficult by any means, but just know before hand that the best results will come from taking your time and doing it right.

                                  Overall though, fantastic product.
