I just bought a Bellafina Prima with some damage to the top of the instrument as advertised. I have just picked it up in Montana and will be driving it back to Calgary to have the top cracks repaired by a luthier with a good reputation. I have already put the bridge back up and was able to tune the strings to a lower than standard pitch. I am delighted with the sound I have been able to get out of the bass so far and am looking forward to getting the top repaired and the actions set up. I used to own a Czech hybryd from c 1950's or so and this is a much nicer bass but maybe not quite as sturdy. However I will take delicacy over sturdiness anytime.

I own both the Bellafina 50 and bought a refurbished Bellafina Prima for "practice" at home. The "50" has great bottom, but is really lacking in the upper positions. The Prima is balanced throughout all registers, and while it has a little less "thump" the tonality and depth of the sound make it a better bass for bowing or pizzacato. I wouldn't recommend bowing the "50" as it is limited in its tonality.
Has everything you need in a bass. Has good thump!
Finish is very thin and subject to showing wear and tear

When I ordered a used instrument, I was very skeptical, but upon arrival, I discovered that it was exactly as they described, if not better. I really like the tonality of this bass in the upper positions. It's a very well thought out production bass. If you are buying your first one, don't mess around with the laminated Bellafina 50, just go ahead and spend the money on this one, it's worth every penny.
