Comments about Florea Prodigy Cello Outfit:

I play guitar and have fiddled with a fiddle but am totally new to cello. I love the cello's deep, expressive sound and wanted one to play with but didn't want to spend a lot of money.

I bought my Florea Prodigy after sending back a Florea Recital 2 that was unplayable.

I was pleased with the Prodigy; it was playable right out of the box, with decent action and appropriate string spacing at neck and bridge. The thin satin finish was attractive and looked and felt comfortably broken-in. Top and back were nice, solid pieces of wood without any obvious filler pieces. The only visible flaws were near the neck/body joint, where it looked like the sides were made of thin plies and had lost tiny bits of the outer ply when cut. Doubt this (lost bits or plies) has any real impact on the instrument's sound, though. The fingerboard appeared to be rosewood and was nicely shaped. Tuners and fine-tuners worked smoothly.

The bag was very thin - no padding whatsoever. The fiberglass bow felt heavier and stiffer than a wood violin bow but worked well enough.

When I took it to a local specialist in violin-family instruments, he said "We can make a cello out of this!" and after a setup costing (about 1/6 the current MF price) it plays very well, with a deep voice that hints at potential well beyond my playing skills.

I gave this cello a 4-star rating because it seems "very good" for its price point and a solid value. In my mind 5 stars are reserved for instruments that are either exceptional regardless of price or obvious standouts worth far more than their cost. There are a few other cellos that also appear to offer great value at a similar price (including one with an ebony fingerboard), but since I like my Prodigy I won't be able to compare unless I meet someone who owns one.

Comments about Florea Prodigy Cello Outfit:

I'm a professional violinist and violist and decided I wanted to learn cello also. Spent many years hanging out in a violin maker's shop and learned a lot about what goes into a quality instrument. The quality of the wood (maple back and sides, spruce top) is paramount and this cello has it. So much better than the wood laminates (basically plywood) that go into most student cellos. The cello label says it is made in China, but don't let that deter you. A lot of quality instruments are built in China and are usually very affordable. The only thing I recommend doing with this cello is changing the strings to something higher quality. It improves the sound quite a bit! And to the last poster who complained about a crack at the soundpost... The problem there is with the soundpost either being too long or not in the right place. You never want the post to create a noticable "lump" in the front plate because it will eventually crack. That's true of any instrument.

              Not a well made instrument

Comments about Florea Prodigy Cello Outfit:

              Poor cello.
              Ok features
I've had this cello 4 months and it is splitting in different spots.
Crack has started in the top right over the sound post, probably
              fatal. Beware
              Not worth buying.
