Comments about Otto Musica Artino Practice mute:

I purchased this after watching a video comparing the different types of practice mutes on YouTube. Since I live in an apartment with very thin walls, I wanted to be able to significantly dampen the sound, but without distorting the sound too much. I think this works well and achieves both goals. The distortion is minimal (I can still notice when I hit the wrong note quite easily) and the instrument is very quiet. Since the mute doesn't sit completely down on the bridge, there is some obstruction regarding the position of the bow on the strings. Also, the mute is a very tight fit so caution is needed when placing it or removing it so you don't alter the position of the bridge. I am extremely happy with this purchase and I'm sure my neighbors appreciate its use as well.

Comments about Otto Musica Artino Practice mute:

I estimate it provides about 10dB of attenuation. Tone and pitch seem unaffected. If your violin/fiddle is not too high it's not too difficult to see over it. With a high shoulder rest it might block your view of the fingerboard more.

    Very quiet, high quality mute

Comments about Otto Musica Artino Practice mute:

This is a good quality mute. I'm new to violin (but not to playing music), and I'm using it on a an electric violin. I tried 3 different mutes, and this is my favorite, the others being a big metal chrome mute of about the same size and a lighter weight sort of rubber mute, both from Carlo Robelli.

This mute dampens the sound more than the other two I tried, and sits a bit lower on the bridge than the other heavy mute. There are two phillips screws in this mute, you can loosen them and press the mute down pretty close to the bridge and tighten the screws back up. Even with the mute all the way down though, it is still hard to see where the bow is in relation to the bridge. It is, however, very quiet.

This is a nice mute, the only downside is that it obstructs your view of the bow, like any heavy mute. This might not be important for experienced players, but is a little rough if you're learning how to place the bow. However this is basically a necessary evil for getting a very quiet violin.
