Comments about Rees Harps Flatsicle Harp:
Truth be told: I know almost nothing about harps. I bought this for a gift for my wife (a professional musician), and she loves it and continues to play it.
I can see for myself that it is well constructed, and as a musician and sound engineer I can hear that it sounds pretty clear and resonant, keeps its tuning fairly well.
It was certianly better than a harp I bought years ago from another maker and another place.
If it is a harp you want, I see no reason not to get one of these Rees models, the color choices are outstanding and the craftsmanship is pretty good.
Comments about Rees Harps Flatsicle Harp:
We have ordered quite a few of these harps for our beginner students over the past several years, and will continue to do so. I find them very easy to teach with. There really is nothing I dislike about them. Convenient, portable, well made, easy to play and sound great. Also, many more, very experienced players love having these, because they are so convenient to carry around rather than lug a heavy floor harp.
I play and teach Celtic Harp at an Irish cultural center in NJ. Our students are adults and children as young as five years old. I opted for the Flatsicle as my favorite choice in the Rees Harp line, though all their harps are wonderful, because the Flatsicle allows you to play in quite a lot of keys without retuning with a tuning key. It has "sharping levers" on the C, B & F strings which allow for quicky moving into different keys. The Sharpsicle model has levers on the C & F strings, which is mostly adequate for most purposes, but the Flatsicle allows for a little more range. I just feel the extra money is worth the cost for something that will likely last a lifetime.
When I first ordered the Flatsicle, I figured... OK a four pound harp... can't have much sound. I was very pleasantly surprised. It was built extremely well, is very sturdy, and the sound is loud and sweet. Very projective.Very easy to play too, even for our students as young as five years old. My own harp is very well used, I take it many places, play it all the time, and it never has any problems. Nor do our student's harps in the Harpsicle line. I have yet to hear of one breaking a string either!
Eventually a serious student will want a larger floor harp of 34 strings or more, but only rarely will they part with their Harpsicle, Sharpsicle, Fullsicle or Flatsicle, they not only fall in love with them, but they can take them easily to lessons and leave the big harp at home! They are the ultimate in convenience combined with great sound.
For anyone who doesn't think this is a "real harp", try one out. You will be amazed! Rees Harps is also a very well known harp building company of long standing, they really know what they are doing when it comes to building harps! The quality is amazing.
The Flatsicle and other harps by Rees in the Harpsicle line are the lowest priced good, reliable and playable harp available in my opinion. For a student on a budget, these harps are super.
