OVERVIEW

Versatile, great-sounding bass transducer.

The Realist Upright Bass Pickup consists of a piezo in a flexible copper housing that fits between the top of your double bass and the E string bridge foot. The Realist acoustic transducer was designed by Ned Steinberger in collaboration with the well-known NYC-based luthier David Gage.

Co-designer David Gage's thoughts: "Recognizing the limitations of microphones and traditional piezo transducers, Ned and I decided that for the working musician things could and should be better. We felt a transducer should be equal in its ability to recreate an acoustic pizzicato and arco sound through commonly used amplifiers. Furthermore, this pick-up had to be simple, dependable, and affordable. After years of consideration and tests, we have come up with a system that achieves all of these goals.

The Realist understands the hours of practice it takes to draw your sound out of your instrument, and with this pick-up your voice can be heard more accurately through an amplifier. Both recording engineers and professional musicians have been startled by the great tone and even response when playing pizzicato and arco. Finally, you can play both pizz and arco without having to play with your controls."

Comments about The Realist Lifeline Piezo Double Bass Pickup:

This is a really well designed pickup. It replaced my 15-year-old original copper Realist pick-up. The old one still works, but I wanted to try this newer design since it doesn't sit between the bridge foot and the top plate of the bass. As someone who uses a microphone when at all possible, I would say this Lifeline is the best option when necessary. It's a fairly round, warm sound and I think it's somewhat nicer than most other pick ups I've tried over the years. As I increase volume I EQ the mid range down somewhat and cut the boomy ultra-low frequencies with my amp's high pass filter. Great results, at least thru my Acoustic Image series 3 Coda. I think this pick up has much less harshness than others when played at medium to loud volumes.

Comments about The Realist Lifeline Piezo Double Bass Pickup:

Great product. David gage sells 2 sizes: normal and extra large. My bass has an unstandardized bridge pin and therefore I need the extra large. Not having closely examined David Gage's website I didn't realize there were multiple sizes. Had to return and order the XL from David Gage.

Comments about The Realist Lifeline Piezo Double Bass Pickup:

Bought to replace RS bridge wing pickup due to feedback issues. On my Engelhart Swing Master, this pickup feeds back just the same as the RS. The sound is a bit muddier than the RS as the highs have to be rolled off to try to mitigate feedback. I play with a very loud big band and am unable to get sufficient volume with pickup alone. Need to use a pre-amp, even with the Lifeline. Lifeline picks up bowing much better than the RS.

The is a great pickup. Very easy to install and use. No need for a pre-amp. You can just plug in and play. I play of a acoustic bass amp and a GK115
