OVERVIEW

Get Geezer's signature sound with modern touches.

EMG Pickups, along with legendary artist Geezer Butler, have collaborated to develop the GZR-P and GZR-PJ signature bass sets. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame bass player started working with EMG founder Rob Turner in 2011, looking to find the classic bass tone he had in Black Sabbath's early days. As Geezer and Black Sabbath moved from studio to touring in 2013, the final component of getting the classic Geezer tone was in play, the rigors of a world tour.

To recapture Geezer's early Black Sabbath tone, it meant a new EMG vintage-style passive P & PJ design with a few modern touches. The all solderless P set uses Alnico 5 pole pieces and custom-wound coils for just the right amount of punch and grit. The J (PJ set) also uses Alnico 5 poles and features two custom-wound split-coils that both eliminate the noise and hum usually associated with early '70s bass pickups and allow for more power and volume than any other standard single-coil J, giving this set remarkable balance between the P & J. The result is unmistakable early Geezer Butler bass tone with deep, tight low end that you can hear on "Iron Man," "War Pigs" and "Paranoid." Said Geezer, "I never felt comfortable giving my name to any other pickups, but this time these have blown me away."

Comments about EMG Geezer Butler Signature PJ Bass Pickup Set:

I bought a "scratch and dent" Squire Affinity P/J bass as a project. I didn't want the hassle of a battery in a P bass, so I put this set in it, great sound. They have a Fender sound, but more power, and much more clarity. And dead quiet, no hum at all. I've read mixed reviews on the quick connectors, but I've never had the first problem with either set of EMG's I have. Very easy to wire up. Lots of different tone combos you can get from these as well. They do have straight shaft pots, so you may have to buy new knobs. I got lucky I guess, mine fit. I'd recommend these for those looking for a good passive set. I'd buy them again.

Comments about EMG Geezer Butler Signature PJ Bass Pickup Set:

Love the fact that it comes with pots, Jack and plug n play wiring. Easy clean install. The sound wasn't for me however. It lacked the woody tone I've come to love about my Fender P & J basses. To me, these lacked midrange to cut through the mix.

Comments about EMG Geezer Butler Signature PJ Bass Pickup Set:

Had to change control knobs. Even response. Sound is good and a good step up from conventional pick-ups on cheaper model bass guitars. I didn't expect poor quality from EMG. They are a solid company that puts out good products. They came thru for me. So far so good.

Comments about EMG Geezer Butler Signature PJ Bass Pickup Set:

If you get a lot of hum do a 180 on the neck-side precision pickup and if you still get a buzz check the wires hookup to the output jack (the diagram drawing is ambiguous.

Comments about EMG Geezer Butler Signature PJ Bass Pickup Set:

This set has everything you can ask for complete package pickups, pots, and wiring. Solderless installation, just line up the arrows on the plugs and play. For best results while you have your bass apart make sure your cavities are properly shielded and you will be one happy bass player when you plug in.

Comments about EMG Geezer Butler Signature PJ Bass Pickup Set:

Great sounding pickups with an even response over the entire range. Very smooth and even mid range response. Lows are tight and controlled and highs are sweet and not harsh. Pickup balance is above average for a PJ set but not completely even. When solo'd,the bridge pick up is still a little quieter than the neck pickup which is very common in PJ sets. Very easy to install. The only negative was my bass came with split shaft pots and these are solid shaft pots so my existing control knobs wouldn't fit. I had to order a new set of control knobs.
