Linear PCM recorder with studio-quality sound and versatile stereo recording.

The PCM-D50 is a 96 kHz/24-bit recorder fitted with two-position (X-Y or Wide) stereo microphones, 4 GB of internal flash memory, and a Memory Stick Pro-HG Duo slot for additional storage. The body of the D50 is constructed of lightweight aluminum and it is built rugged to withstand the demands of pro applications, plus it offers long battery life using conventional AA alkaline batteries. The recorder includes a USB high-speed port for simple uploading/downloading its native .WAV format files to and from Windows PC or Macintosh computers. Other unique PCM-D50 features include digital pitch control, dual digital limiter (inherited from the PCM-D1), low-cut filter, Super Bit Mapping, A-B repeat, and MP3 playback capability. To complement the D50 recorder, new optional accessories include a remote commander, tripod stand, and microphone windscreen.

        Built-in Electret Condenser Microphones
The PCM-D50's electret condenser microphones have exceptionally high sound quality and offer a selection of 2 operating positions, X-Y and Wide Stereo. X-Y covers a wide sound range with good depth, perspective and a natural sounding stereo image; or alternatively, a wide stereo position offering a wider spread stereo image.

        Superior Audio Signal Path
The PCM-D50 is designed with four separate circuit boards to separate analog audio, digital audio, digital recording, and power supply circuits. Separate circuit boards for each function helps minimize noise.

        Simple Uploading to Computer
The PCM-D50 conforms to the USB 2.0 Mass Storage Class Device standard and this recorder's native recording file format is .WAV. This means recordings can be rapidly uploaded to a computer and used in conjunction with most common audio production software.

        Versatile Recording Functions
The PCM-D50 offers comprehensive signal processing features for location recording including a unique dual digital limiter function (inherited from the PCM-D1 recorder), a high pass filter with selectable frequencies (150 Hz or 75 Hz) and SBM (Super Bit Mapping) noise shaping. In addition, the PCM-D50 includes a 5 second pre-record buffer with an A-B repeat playback function.

        Top notch recorder

        By Troy Albritton

        from Lousiana

Comments about Sony PCM-D50 Portable Linear PCM Digital Recorder:

This is one fantastic recorder. While is has quality buit-in mics, the machine is ultra-sensitive to touch while recording. I mean that the machine picks up extraneous noise caused by being handled during recording so make sure you set the machine for no-touch during recording and you'll love it. If you add a high quality mic, you'll achieve even greater results. The manual is clear and easy to understand. I am TOTALLY enamored with this recorder and am still discovering its possibilities.

        An Outstanding Recorder

        By Noisefree-dD.wF

        from Naples, FL

Comments about Sony PCM-D50 Portable Linear PCM Digital Recorder:

I have never had an instrument of any kind that I could trust to always function correctly, until I purchased the SONY D-50. Fortunately, I bought it several years ago when it first was released, and got the Audio Studio 10 software as a bonus.

My profession is safety and noise control engineering. Recently, I visited a site of a new athletic center with a noisy cooling tower installation that has the neighbors "up in arms" and is threatening a shutdown of the building. The information I gathered was to be shared by many people throughout the country. My report had to be proffered by the end of the day.

Sound level readings, including 1/3 octave analysis, were incorporated into the report along with spot recordings made with the D-50 and saved as MP3 clips. The entire package, e-mailed to the assembly, painted a compelling picture. The D-50 paid for itself on that one job (and it cost a lot less than the Type I SLM).

The SONY unit is extremely durable (I've already dropped it several times without incident) and "battery friendly." I always use lithium batteries, because I want it to be ready to go at a moment's notice.

The only thing I would like to see, when using the D-50 to record my own music, is the ability to overlay tracks, like the Korg unit does. I was ready to also purchase the Korg - until I saw that it didn't have USB output.

        Excellent recorder

        By River View Music

        from New York

Comments about Sony PCM-D50 Portable Linear PCM Digital Recorder:

I am far from being tech savy, I tried the Zoom H4N and returned it. I was a little skeptical of upping the price point but decided to try the Sony PCM-D50. It only took a short while to figure it out, test a song recording and transfer to my computer. I am definitlely hooked! What an amazing sound and ease of use I will definitely get a lot of use from this one!!

        For Discerning Musicians only

        By Jazzman-fQj2W

        from New York City

Comments about Sony PCM-D50 Portable Linear PCM Digital Recorder:

Don't buy this recorder if you play loud amplified, distorted music--you won't notice a difference compared to all the cheap recorders. I've used this for 8 months playing jazz (much of it acoustic) and never had results like this before. It rivals my DAT but has better limiters and super clean pre-amps. It hasn't gone down in price in 2 years where all the others keep falling.(hint) The built in mics are very good. Put a better mic in and your results improve but has to be fairly expensive mic. As with all Sony stuff, memory stick but they are cheap nowadays. Good luck.

        Great All-Around Recorder

        By Donna J. Lambert

        from Defiance, Ohio

Comments about Sony PCM-D50 Portable Linear PCM Digital Recorder:

I got this recorder three days ago and found it to be a very durable, capable machine. It is exactly what so many people have been raving about, although it is a bit pricey. I'm sure I'll get my money's worth out of it, since it works well as a field recorder or hooked up to a sound system or keyboard. It works well doing everything, and I haven't even done all that much with it yet. I will probably use the recorder with my digital keyboards and a mixer. It's a little larger than a lot of digital recorders, but it is very rugged, which is good for taking on the road. If you think you'll do a lot of serious recording, you won't go wrong with this machine.

No time for the wrong Recorder

Comments about Sony PCM-D50 Portable Linear PCM Digital Recorder:

I just got this recorder, first off I didn't have time to buy the wrong one, I followed the reviews right here and am satisfied that I purchased the right unit. It is a solid, does what it is suppose to do unit, Contains 4 - AA batteries, that is good and is the only unit that you can purchase a wired remote for that I found. I swear by the reviews, and if it hadn't been for them I don't think i would have been as confident as I was for this purchase. I didn't have the time/money to waste on a unit that wouldn't do what I needed done. enough said,.

        Better Sound Quality Than Expected

        By Rhythm N Booze

        from Dirty South

Comments about Sony PCM-D50 Portable Linear PCM Digital Recorder:

I have had this recorder for about ten months and it really works great. I bring it to gigs and either give it to the sound guy or I will place it somewhere around the middle of the stage pointed towards a monitor. If its on stage I just hit the divide button in between songs and then at the end of the night I load them on my computer and all the songs are already split so then I can give the other guys in the band a copy. It sounds really good and picks up bass very well but beware because it picks up wind as well. The 4 gig internal memory seems to be more than enough for 4 hours worth of recording

        Great Portable Recorder

        By Rudy-prrfi

        from Philadelphia area

Comments about Sony PCM-D50 Portable Linear PCM Digital Recorder:

I got the PCM D-50 to use for "test" recordings in various acoustic spaces with both instruments and vocal solos and ensembles. It has performed so well in so many different situations that it is now a permanent part of my travels and I am collecting many more useful recordings than I did when having to use larger equipment with external mikes, etc. Don't know how I existed without it!
