OVERVIEW

Album-quality recording in the palm of your hand.

TASCAM's DR-05 now comes in a limited edition white color design, perfect for showing off your passion for mobile recording in style. The DR-05 records in MP3 or WAV format, including 24-bit/96kHz high-resolution audio to microSD or microSDHC media. A pair of all-new microphones handles up to 125dB SPL with the sensitivity to capture every detail. With new recording features like Peak Reduction and Quick Menu, the DR-05 puts album-quality recording in the palm of your hand.

Premium-quality Sound

Everything about the DR-05 is designed to get the best quality recordings of your music. A new pair of built-in microphones withstands up to 125dB SPL —the volume of a jet plane from 200 feet away—yet still have the sensitivity to capture every detail of a performance. You can add your own microphone or line-level source through the 1/8" stereo input, including plug-in power for microphones that need it.

Internally, the DR-05's digital and analog circuit boards are built separately to improve noise performance, with a low-impedance design to further decrease hiss. A separate power supply is sent to the A/D and D/A converter for even better audio performance. The result is clean sound quality —over 92dB signal-to-noise ratio; under 0.05% total harmonic distortionl and 20Hz to 40kHz response (-1/+3dB) at 24-bit/96kHz resolution.

Simple to Operate

The layout of the DR-05 has been revamped to be quick and easy to work with one thumb. Operations like recording, adjusting levels, deleting bad takes and adding markers are just a button-press away. Dig deeper to find features like limiting, low-cut filtering, a built-in chromatic tuner, and more.

One new feature that makes the DR-05 easy to operate is the new Peak Reduction feature. This setting automatically sets your recording level by listening to the input and adjusting for the best level. Unlike Auto Gain settings, this one only goes down to prevent accidental distortion after a period of low level like a break. Peak Recording works in rehearsal mode or in record, so if the performance is louder than the soundcheck you're still safe. Used with the built-in limiter, it's unlikely you'll distort your career-making live recording.

Other classic TASCAM features are included, like Variable Speed Audition to loop and slow down music without changing the pitch—perfect for transcribing or learning new music. A Level Align function can be switched on for playback to smooth out any sudden volume jumps, and a built-in speaker is also provided. The two AA batteries are enough to power the recorder for 17 1/2 hours, even while recording at CD quality.

This device does a decent job recording. Since it includes batteries and the SD card, for the price it's not bad. The biggest downfall of this product is the same issue with other Tascam products I own, which is the outdated software. It's really embarrasing that Tascam is so behind the times with it's software. It's an extreme pain trying to name a track with seven characters and using the buttons to scroll through individual characters.

As a note, keep in mind that the recordings made with this device will have to be mastered. They have a very dull and unlively sound. Don't expect to have a finished product with the recordings of this device. The quality isn't bad though. It records in wav, so the track has potential and the microphones are decent. I would say that if you want an inexpensive recorder for live recordings and have some mastering ability, this product will be fine. Just expect to deal with cruddy software.

Comments about TASCAM DR-05W Limited Edition Solid State Recorder:

While obviously there are higher end recorders out there, this one will get the job done in many different circumstances. The built in microphones have excellent quality for such things as close miking guitars or even for vocals, but because they are omnidirection you need to have an absolutely quiet recording environment to get quality sounds (no refrigerator kicking on, air conditioning, computer fans, etc..) or the other sounds will be picked up. The input being 1/8" instead of XLR and mic level as apposed to line level are the primary faults, but at this price point what can you really expect. If you have the higher end models with combo XLR/TRS inputs, it makes hooking into different devices easier, but with this item a few adapter cables release a lot of its potential. A 1/8" TRS to dual 1/4" TS patch cable or 1/8" TRS to RCA cable is pretty cheap, and will allow you to hook into the output of many different mixers or other devices (so long as you can turn down the signal down below line level). I also use an XLR to 1/8" TRS line leveling transformer to record directly from various XLR sources including Dynamic Microphones and vocal pedals, and it sounds excellent. If the sound level is too hot on XLR sources, you can use an XLR attenuator, such as the 20,30,40 db pad made by Hosa. For 1/8" signals, a regular inline headphone volume control works well, though it may color the sound if you have to attenuate it too much. Last, a simple 1/8" TRS male to 1/4" TS female adapter will allow you to hook directly into the device from an electric or acoustic guitar for a nice clean sound when you don't have a 100% quiet environment to record in.

I enjoy this little recorder very much. The value is excellent and it's very versatile. Recording though line-in works great as well as through the built in mics. I've used this so far recording sound board mixes and recording my drum performances to see how I did. Very easy to use and get recordings off of. The battery lasts a long time too.
