The rugged TASCAM DR-100 offers high-end recording features to musicians and engineers who demand more from their portable recorder. It features four built-in microphones, two cardioid and two omnidirectional, with analog limiting and filtering that will have you producing great-sounding recordings no matter where you are. A pair of XLR microphone inputs with phantom power welcomes pro-grade condenser microphones, and line in and out connectors are also provided.
The DR-100 includes a rechargeable Lithium-ion battery, but can also be powered by AA batteries or an optional AC adapter. A built-in speaker allows for instant playback, and the metal enclosure includes a tripod-mounting hole for recording flexibility. A wireless remote control is also included for remotely starting the recording, as well as a windscreen and carrying case.

I found the DR100-MKII to be a capable little device considering its price point. The mic preamps are fairly quiet and provide very good quality, but they do overload a bit too easily with my Audio-Technica AT-897 shotgun mic. The on-board omni-directional mics performed well but I would prefer a wider sound with a bit more "stereo" spread. Again, I have to mention that for the [$] I paid for mine (after discount), I'm quite pleased with the overall performance of the device. My only other complaint besides the minor overloading issue was the battery life of the lithium ion pack supplied with the unit. Supplying phantom power, the Li-ion pack was drained by 33% after only 45 minutes of use. Fortunately, you can supplement the Li-ion with a pair of alkaline "AA" batteries which should be sufficient record time for most applications.
