Comments about TASCAM DR-100 Portable Digital Recorder:

The only hang-ups are the rate at which the recorder uses batteries. Since I have to have the preamps on high gain, the rechargeable battery lasts me maybe 4-5 hours tops and will eat AAs like none other. Consider getting another rechargeable battery.
Like I said above, the preamps are a bit noisy.
Overall, the problems are not something that planning ahead and a little post-production work won't take care of if you want to be really picky like me.
Generally this is a great product and offers a bit more than competing models.
I purchased this recorder, as opposed to other cheaper and smaller models, Because of it's multiple inputs. Line and XLR inputs are great to have and work well and give you other options, as do the omni and uni-directional internal mics. The ability to change the L-R gain levels are something that the Zoom model doesn't have I believe and is an added plus. Also, the dual battery source option is great, because it eats quite a bit of juice.
The buttons and menu options are fairly easy to use, get used to. The auto-record, and limiter are nice to have when doing field work.
I think the housing is plastic and can be noisy, as are the buttons, when using the internal mics.
In every application, I've had to use lots of gain, in fact, I don't believe I've ever switched it off the High gain setting. Unfortunately the preamps are kinda noisy and not that transparent when you boost it so high. I was expecting something more quality, but the noise is not a problem that some post-production noise reduction won't take care of.
I found it cheaper on line, and the price I got it for, around 200, is worth it. It is a very useful and versatile recorder.

Amazing value and quality

Comments about TASCAM DR-100 Portable Digital Recorder:

For someone who truly understands audio and how to capture and work with it properly, the Tascam DR-100 is an amazing unit. I feel that it is geared more for the professional, and reading reviews from obviously more casual users reinforces my opinion that perhaps beginners should stay away from this unit. To say the sound is "wobbly" betrays the user's knowledge. I get amazing sound from this unit consistently, both from the built-in mics when essential and external condenser mics set up properly. The XLR ins are also a life-saver when going into an unknown situation to capture event sound. The 2 sets of batteries has never made me "pull my hair out", but rather is a life saver when set up properly to record first from one set, then switch to the other when power is low. Ingenious! If you are an audio professional, but need something very compact on occasion, this is the one.

Nice device to have

Comments about TASCAM DR-100 Portable Digital Recorder:

Picked this up for work not too long ago, does extremely well for getting voice audio and capturing sfx around the neighborhood. A must buy for people wanting mobile recording for film or animation for the price!

Some issues.

Comments about TASCAM DR-100 Portable Digital Recorder:

This unit at first glance is nicer sounding digital recorder with some decent ease of use. Diving in further the unit is infested with error messages and an awkward 2 battery source(rechargeable inside and AAs)that can make you want to pull out your hair. The actual sound of these units are not that bad they sound good, and the XLR inputs are a bonus as well. I would not and never suggest this for musical venture in recording, but for spoken word it will do the job.Overall some nice features like the double XLR and phantom power features, but ease of use and practicality really shoot this unit down, TASCAM has let me down.

Poor Quality Sound

By Cain

from San Diego, Ca

Comments about TASCAM DR-100 Portable Digital Recorder:

If you want to record live music with decent playback quality this is not a good unit. I did a lot of research before purchasing the DR-100 and it looked great on paper. However, I was quite disappointed with the sound quality of the recording . The sound is very "tinny" and wobbly, like a cheap cassette recorder. It is NOT the "CD quality" that their promo propaganda describes. Not at all good for recording music. It might be ok for recording spoken voice from a classroom or lecture. But, if that's what you need a small recorder for, buy something cheaper. No need to pay this price for the same quality as cheaper units. I sent mine back for a refund.

Amazing Quality

Comments about TASCAM DR-100 Portable Digital Recorder:

I have had the TASCAM DR-100 recorder for about a week now, and I am very impressed. It has most of the features you could ever ask for, including XLR inputs with phantom power. There are two negatives, depending on how you look at it. First, it is big. Too big for a shirt pocket, but it does fit in the back pocket of my jeans. The other is that it is hypersensitive to handling noise. You cannot use this to record while hand-holding it, unless you grip it tightly and never move a finger until the recording is finished. BUT, if you mount it onto a tripod or place it on a stable surface, you will get amazing results. I have, prior to this, owned a Sony minidisk recorder, an Edirol R-09, and a Yamaha Pocketrak CX. This has been the best, although I loved and got great results from the Edirol, and the Yamaha was good, although in a different class. It has taken me all week to learn most of the features of this recorder. It has an excellent user guide, and comes with a case and remote control (both infrared and wired). It ships with a rechargeable battery and takes two additional AA batteries, which it will automatically switch to when the main battery gets too low. It feels like a very rugged piece of equipment, and although I hope to never drop it, it feels like it would survive some serious bumps. I highly recommend this recorder for serious audio recording.
