Comments about TASCAM DR-40E Portable Digital Recorder:

I am not a recording expert, so I don't really speak the lingo. However, when I hear 4 track, I think, "O.K. I can record one track and then overdub three more times, and have 4, independent tracks of music - drums, guitar, bass, vocal, all recorded by me, for example." That's not what this is. You have one track (1,2) then you can record another track (3,4) over this. You don't have 4 independent tracks. Just be aware of this before buying. I was thinking this was a digital version of the old tape 4 track machines, but it isn't. Great product, but I think the "4 track" label is very misleading.

Comments about TASCAM DR-40E Portable Digital Recorder:

Small and very accurate recording device. Easy to use. Well worth the money. The on board mikes work very well. We have a 10 year old that is taking up singing lessons and learning a bit on the guitar.

We pulled it out of the box and she sang and I played along it will motivate her to play and practice. Got it for her for her 10th birtday and she can operate it just fine.

Comments about TASCAM DR-40E Portable Digital Recorder:

Much better than the DR-07 which I used for years. The XLR inputs are a great feature. However hand holding while using the built-in miss still makes noise though not as bad as the DR-07. I use my own Shure condenser mics and it works great.

Comments about TASCAM DR-40E Portable Digital Recorder:

The mic's are extremely sensitive. Heard a buzzy hum when checking levels for recording a V.O. track. Took the headphones off and heard nothing. Suspicious, I walked around with it. Finally found the source - a barely audible cooling fan in a computer in another room. Only the amplified signal thru the headphones made the ambient noise audible.

Built in mics, 1/4" and XLR input jacks. Records in formats from MP3 up to 24 bit 96K. Unlimited memory with SD and SDHC memory chips.

I'm using this for location video shoots and musician performances. It's like having a sound studio in your palm. Runs on common AA batteries, so no possibility of ground loops or power supply hum (unless you feed it in).

This performs way beyond my expectations. TASCAM quality again.

Comments about TASCAM DR-40E Portable Digital Recorder:

I'm using this on a DSLR film rig. I did a few test recordings with just the internal mics and played them back on PC speakers, needless to say it was good enough that my dogs went crazy trying to find the "other dogs" they heard.

If it's good enough for them, it ought to be good enough for you.

Not sure why this is labeled DR-40E, it's still a DR-40 and I notice no difference other than it came with 2 2gb cards instead of 1.

My only gripe is the need to use an adapter if you're using a 1/8" input but having XLR and 1/4". It's very feature rich and is a good alternative to an H4N, especially for the money.
