OVERVIEW

David has used this same EMG system for many years on his main red Strat. The DG20 pickup comes with 3 ivory SA single-coil pickups, wired with an EXG guitar expander, an SPC presence control, and master volume - all on a deluxe white pearl pickguard, ivory pickups, and white knobs. The SA single-coil pickups feature Alnico magnets which give a full round tone with an accentuated mid range. The EMG-EXG guitar expander circuit increases the bass and treble while reducing the mids, perfect for chord definition at higher volumes, while the SPC makes the SAs sing by boosting the mids and turning your single coils into full blown humbucking!

Now you can have the same guitar pickups and tone accessories as David, but keep practicing if you want to get to the "Dark Side of the Moon."

EMG-EXG
For flexibility in tone at your fingertips, there is no better choice than the EXG guitar expander. The frequency response of the EXG is similar to normal guitar amp equalization. The lows and highs are boosted while the midrange is dipped out. The EXG is great for creating a fuller tone that doesn't get muddy, while keeping it clean and clear, letting your guitar stand out in the mix.

Used on David's main red Strat.

25 or 30 years ago, when EMG was very new on the scene, I cobbled together the exact same setup out of the available EMG parts and circuits. Those days it was wire-it-yourself, way before the current "plug-and-play" setup. I think I may have beaten Gilmour to it by a few years. I settled on this rig after a lot of experimentation with other pickups and circuits. Here's why:

1) I was looking for as close as I could get to a "take one guitar to the gig" scenario. In general, it worked although I'd take one or two other "specialty" guitars with alternate tunings and such as well. Between the two tone circuits you have three alnico single-coils and three humbuckers. That covers a lot of ground.

2) I needed to get rid of the troublesome hum and buzz that would show up any time there was a fluorescent or neon fixture on the same block as my other Strat. Done

3) I got tired of having to reach back and screw with amp volumes and levels when I switched from single coils to humbuckers, etc. The high output of the EMG's puts them on a more level playing field with your typical medium output humbucker. Done. Also the low output impedance and high output level means you can get your signal through a pile of pedals with lots less degradation

4) I got VERY tired of being somewhere with iffy AC power and kissing a mic and having it bite me back. The lack of a string ground eliminates the possibility of a ground loop or short. That can be a life-saver.

5) I also was frustrated with rolling back the volume on a guitar and losing the treble with it. The EMG's don't do that.

The short of it? I built that guitar in the early 80's and it's still my favorite Strat. Does it sound like your vintage 50's or '60's Strat? Probably not. But I'd bet that your vintage Strat doesn't sound like my vintage Strat either.

Oh, by the way, I just came by to pick up the handy-dandy pre-wired version for another guitar. Ya gotta love it. I can put the whole thing in, start to finish and be playing again inside an hour. That beats the socks off of the hours and hours I put in to cobbling my original rig together in the first place.
This set up can truly be the cover band player's answer to "take one guitar to the gig and cover it all"
EMG's construction quality, just by it's nature, is nearly bulletproof.
Spendy, but, in my opinion, worth it

Worked okay after repair

Would not work after installing it. Removed it and foe und the ground connection broke. The ground wire is way too small.

Comments about EMG-DG20 David Gilmour Pre-Wired Pickguard/Pickup Set:

Installation of these couldn't have been easier. Tones are great. They sound different than passive pickups, but I don't think anyone would notice in a live setting. I find that setting the height lower gives you a closer to natural tone. Now the pickguard.... It fit fine. Holes lined up. I tried to like the pearl finish. Just couldn't. So moved them to the stock pickguard and it look much better. The SPC and EXG controls make the difference in the set. I like the EMG's. Just realize you have to give up a little traditional vintage sound to use these. They have their own vibe.

i got this today and put it in my 2006 Mexican strat the install was easy took 10 min to do . i tryed it out on my fender mustang 2 amp through the speaker its did give the start some balls i must say played for 20 min then went away for a while then came back went through head phones and it bout blew my head off! oh yea but if you want the Gilmore sound this is the first step i would take of course he has a elaborate set up to and uses may amps etc . but as for the tone of this item its the real deal may take some tweeking and dialing your settings on the amp in but i would recommend this for any one who is a floyd nut or blues player iv got must to tinker with now this just changed my world tonight .

Comments about EMG-DG20 David Gilmour Pre-Wired Pickguard/Pickup Set:

I found the biggest highlight is the noise free environment so if you have to add lots of compression, saturation, etc. you can experiment for hours and keep a peaceful pace for yourself. EXP values of 3 to 6 opens up the sound to sort of like electroacoustic tone. ESP is to narrow down frequencies to have a clean result out of saturation stage but I found I loose the top end (behaves like passive EQ). So far I don't use it much. If I get the EQ pedal, I will. Overall I found the sound is not as organic / complex character of regular single coil but once it is blended with the other tracks you will appreciate the definition of the tone. If I had original Fender '69 pickups I wouldn't buy this unless as a 2nd guitar setup if I had the money.

Really a great setup. If you like David's A Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division Bell tones, this is the key ingredient. Very versatile and very powerful! But not only for Gilmour, an all-around great setup. Very nice tones to be had here.

Comments about EMG-DG20 David Gilmour Pre-Wired Pickguard/Pickup Set:

The EMG Pro system is a "drop-in" replacement for the Fender Am. Standard. The sound upgrade is full-bodied with plenty of cut for those lead licks.

The active system is noiseless, especially when compared to the stock Fender passive (high gain) pickups. Very responsive to the pick (pluck) with great attack. Yet, rich warm overdrive sounds are easy with a slight adjust on the tone knobs.

The classic "Fender sparkle" is slightly subdued, although still attainable using the middle and neck pickups.

David Gilmour typically drives his guitars through a fuzz effect to add the mid-range edginess. A touch of distortion and delay would help the signature sound too. As such, outboard processing would aid to exploit the EMG's capabilities.

All in all, I like the upgrade to the strat sound with the EMG pickups. And the drop-in addition with the pre-assembled pickguard is a fantastic deal. Well built and convenient.

Comments about EMG-DG20 David Gilmour Pre-Wired Pickguard/Pickup Set:

I was REALLY impressed with this. I stopped by EMG's site to watch the instructional video on how to wire this as well just to make sure. It only took a few minutes to install and REALLY made a big difference in overall sound of my strat.
The wiring was clean, the directions were clear and the quality was pro. I think its main strength was the difference in tone when playing clean. Such a pure sound. And putting overdrive on it is great - very expressive. I am VERY happy to have bought this. Even the swap to a different pickguard cover was a snap. Great job EMG. I will be referring this product to my friends.

Comments about EMG-DG20 David Gilmour Pre-Wired Pickguard/Pickup Set:

I added this pup system to a 2000 American Standard Strat. The Strat originally came with the Delta-Tone pickups. They did not have the tone output I was hoping for. I upgraded to the Noiseless Vintage pups several years ago. They were an improvement, but still not what I had in mind. The EMG DG20 system is fantastic. I can get all kinds of tones. Works really well with EFX. You can dial in sounds you never thought possible. Really cool to find something that offers so many sound possibilities just by changing the tone knob settings. This will now be my go-to guitar when we play out. No need to bring along my Les Paul. The only negative with this system is that it uses a battery that is housed in the cutout under the volume/tone knobs. You have to remove 4 screws and pull up the guard to change it. Not bad but a little inconvenient!
