OVERVIEW

Excellent sound reproduction, and high-quality construction.

Engineered for meticulous reproduction of even the most complex modern music, Akai Professional’s RPM500 studio monitors easily handle layer after layer of sound, providing critical detail and the tools needed to mix with confidence. The fast Kevlar cone provides lucid low-end agility, reproducing intricate bass patterns with ease. It’s authoritative sound for the craft of music production, only from Akai Professional.

Pure Bi-Amplified Power
RPM500 offers pure and accurate frequency response from 50Hz to 30kHz. The 90W distributed Class A/B provides the woofer and tweeter dedicated amplification—80W to the woofer, 40W to the tweeter—meaning you get ultra-efficient power and minimal distortion. The flared rear-firing bass port delivers low-frequency depth and definition.

Meticulous Control
Dedicated proximity and EQ-tailoring controls give you the ability to fine-tune the speaker in diverse mixing environments. RPM500 also features HF Trim, MF Boost, and LF Cutoff controls, which allow you to find the right balance in any environment. The included monitor isolation pad dramatically decreases structure-borne resonances, and the integrated radio frequency protection preserves signal purity. RPM500 includes XLR, balanced 1/4” TRS, and RCA inputs.

Solid to the Core
RPM500’s cabinet is painstakingly reinforced to minimize flex, combating unwanted coloration while blocking anomalies and sound artifacts from polluting your mix. The no-compromise build quality is reflected even in components you’ll never see such as the recess-mounted amp, on/off transient protection, and 14-gauge wiring to transducers. RPM500 also features a built-in output current limiter, over-temperature limiter, and subsonic filter—a full array of top-notch components that you can’t see but make all the difference in the purity that you hear.

Comments about Akai Professional RPM 500 5" Bi-Amplified Studio Monitor (Each):

Great price on good clear studio monitors. I can't say a whole lot since I've only mixed in a professional studio once, but these speakers sound good in my home studio. Judging by some of the sample music I ran through them, I can hear a lot more clarity and some instruments I didn't really hear before. I thought the red color was kind of ugly, but I'm getting used to it and I kind of like it now.

Comments about Akai Professional RPM 500 5" Bi-Amplified Studio Monitor (Each):

These are good monitors. I bought them as a Stupid Deal. For the price I paid I have no complaints. People need to keep in mind that these are near field monitors. They are not really to be used as regular speakers. As far as sound quality goes everyone's ears hear things differently. For me the monitors give me an accurate reproduction of what I've recorded. I never trust just one source for playback and its good to test your recordings on as many different setups as possible. I also use the Mopads from Auralex and this helps with the unwanted transfer of bass frequencies.

I am using a pair of these with my iPad to play music for parties. The sound is fantastic! It is difficult to get the volume set the same on both speakers except precisely 50%, but this works fine using the volume on the iPad for fine control.

Comments about Akai Professional RPM 500 5" Bi-Amplified Studio Monitor (Each):

These monitors are good, but not great. I'm reviewing them as a pair, even though they are sold individually. The main feature that I want in a studio monitor is clear sound. These are a little muddy in the low end, even with either of the two low-cut settings enabled. I like that they have a couple of toggles for things like boosting mids, highs, and a couple other sound settings. They get surprisingly loud, and they can fill a room comfortably. Although a little muddy on the low end, the rest of the range is respectable, especially considering the price.

Each speaker comes with an isolation pad, and I've actually been pretty happy with those. They aren't especially dense, but they do seem to help.

The gain knob is really touchy. It's hard to get both speakers set to similar levels. I ended up just adjusting the gain to get the stereo focal point to center between the speakers and leaving it there.

These are *really* heavy, and surprisingly big. Those are both features that make them seem like good studio monitors. The sound quality doesn't seem to match the build quality, although maybe some more tuning will get me there.

I wish I had bought them in black, since red doesn't really go with my room, but I'm sure the color's nice for someone.

So overall I don't think they're bad, but this is not one of those, "How can this be that good at that price?" products. It's a "Yep. I totally bought that and it functions." product.
