Solid performance, classy appearance, and bullet-proof toughness.
The AKG D870 Supercardioid Dynamic Mic combines all the essential features required in a live sound vocal microphone. Built in Vienna, Austria, you can feel the AKG D870 mic's European quality as soon as you pick it up. The AKG D870 is finished with a velvety soft-touch paint that makes the microphone comfortable while giving it a non-slip surface. The mic's chassis and grille are finished in a matte black that won't detract from the vocalist.
The D870 mic's capsule uses AKG's patented Varimotion design with a diaphragm of varying thickness that allows precise response shaping for high performance and extreme consistency. The sound quality is very smooth with a well-chosen presence peak that brings voices forward in the mix and increases intelligibility. The AKG D870 capsule's neodymium magnet delivers noticeably higher output than a standard dynamic microphone, so less gain is needed, improving dynamic range and lowering noise. The AKG microphone's supercardioid pickup pattern delivers higher gain-before-feedback than normal cardioid designs.
The AKG D870 mic's Doubleflex elastic suspension system lowers handling noise tremendously and the spring steel grille screen with an integrated windscreen delivers reliable control of pops and can easily handle the bump and grind of onstage use. AKG includes a nylon gig bag and a stand clamp, so the D870 mic is ready to go to the show right out of the box. As a further testament to the AKG D870 microphone's performance and quality, it's backed by a 2-year parts and labor warranty from AKG.

i picked 3 of these babies, the price i cannot resist for a REAL AKG. not to be bias to AKG and sennheizers, these are the only mics i trust and use. Compared to the other industry standard brand which model starts with an SM...the D870 has a warmer characteristic and have more balls. Gain, and clarity is wonderful, as long as you understand the science of PA tweaking. She is a little on the bassy side but could easily be compensated. No handling noise, and she does not feed with the same gain as the SM. For the money and quality, i'll put my money on the D870. She is good for an instrument mic as well. I have not recorded with her yet, but for live performances, she is a tank, and will deliver with out hesitation. If you want to pay more for the other industry standard mic that is overpriced for an item that's mass produced from the orient, go with the standard, but if you want clarity, quality that delivers, and yet affordable, D870 is the one for you.
I recently bought a few of these on the stupid deal just to try out on a small venue live stage. I generally use SM57/58s, and was impressed with these enough to replace my 58s with these for instrument mics. Not only is the tone crisper, but it has a farther reach before tone falloff and has better feeback rejection. These are my new microphone of choice for live show instruments.
I gig 3-5 nites a week. From large venues to supper club and open jams. Have used more expensive SM models but this mike stacks up. It is a little bassy but the gain before feed is fab. This thing is indestructable. Plus at this price it is a deal. If you are a Sure guy and like that tone great buy one of these for a back up. It has a warmer tone but better gain and feedback rejection. Actually this mic sounds a lot like my studio condenser. I love it.
AKG D870 blew my audiance away with the sound quality! Matched- up with the huge task of a large professial Hawaiian dance show. I got a great mix from the eight D870 Mics on Hawaiian drums, ukulalies, vocals! D870 perform better than any SM mic you get went it came to the high Gain, clear sound required for this show. Forty bucks each? Really? I'm buying more!
