OVERVIEW

The time-proven sound of an AKG large-diaphragm microphone.

With the AKG Perception 200 Condenser Mic, you get the extras that professionals need for demanding studio work, or for live music applications. Its large diaphragm delivers a full 20Hz-20kHz frequency response that will capture every nuance of any voice or instrument. It can be used in sound fields as high as 145dB, thanks to a switchable -10dB pre-attenuation pad. If you need to place the Perception 200 close to a chesty-voiced singer or a bass-heavy instrument, the mic has a low-frequency roll-off switch that engages a 12 dB-per-octave filter at 300Hz to minimize boominess. It comes with a full-size studio shock mount that eliminates mic stand vibration or footfalls from interfering with your recording and includes a hardshell road case to protect the mic from damage. Backed by AKG's generous 2-year parts and labor warranty.

  • Large-diaphragm microphone

This is basically the pro sound that I expected. There are hard S's- but if you listen closely, you can hear that on most pro recordings; and it distorts when you get in close. (Near-field effect?) If you sit back a little (0.5-1ft), however, you get an amazing sound. These are definitly not dynamic mics. I used to have to load on the effects (EQ, Compression, Chorus, etc.) just to get any kind of 'natural sound'. Now, I can get away with clear sound.Sensitive mic. Get a booth, or try the roll-off @300hz with the -10db pad.Overall, an awesome investment. Oh yeah, and get a pop filter too.

It sounded decent, while it worked. I had it for a couple of years, though didn't use it very much. Recently started using it more and it is dead. The warranty will not cover it. It's not even a good paper weight now(it rolls away). It's not a bad sounding mic, however if the life expectancy is only a couple of years you are better off spending a little more to get something that is constructed a little better.

Good mic Great price

By Isaac -uLXMZ

I've had mine for a couple years now and I'm happy with it. I've used better vocal mics but not by much, and they were 5 times the price. As an active songwriter in the nashville market I've pitched many songs with this mic as the key piece of equipment.

Just what I wanted!

The best mic I had before getting this AKG Perception 200 was the SM58 workhorse. I was happy but new I'd get a large-diaphragm one day. I can't believe the warmth and headroom of this mic. It is unreal. My recordings sound so much more professional now. I Never wrote a review for anything. Choosing a mic, I read the reviews and they helped me so much. I agree totally---get this mic. It is impressive. If something happened to this baby, I'd buy another immediately.

Voiceover Workhorse

By VOICEMAN59

from Southern Indiana

See all my reviews

I bought this mic to use in voiceover work after researching through some broadcast trade pubs and user comments. With some slight EQ this mic provides crisp and clear results while maintaining a warmth that is a broadcast professionals dream. This is a well built unit with a nice case and shock mount included.I am sure the EV RE20 is probably better (I dont see how) but you can't go wrong at this price. Value priced with professional results.I can only attribute the negative comments to those who might not have good equipment to plug in to because this mic is awesome! For less than half the cost of an EV RE20 it provides excellent results for vocals. Get one now!

bought this mike after reading reviews and its true!what a great quality mike. well built, comes with case, and shock mount.I actually recorded a vocal and acoustic guitar song with out setting up for it, the mike just happened to be on and I was sitting and singing near it while my recorder was running I played it back for my wife who is a professional singer and she was blown away! Its an amazing deal! also I did have it going thru a phantom power pre-amp,maybe that is what made it happen that way.I cant wait to use it when I set it up the proper way!

Great Deal!!!

By DJ Lbs.

from Brawley, CA

I got this mic about a month ago, paired it up with a behringer mic amp 200, and into my fostex board, Wow! The sound is crystal clear, transparent, and the mic really holds up to our loudest vocals. The boom roll-off switch helps out a lot when our frontman gets in the booth, but it does almost as good without it. Great Mic!

Spend a little, Get a TON!

By TVP

A friend recommended this mic to me over some less expensive models I was considering. Thank you, my friend! What a rich tone. Low self-noise but sensitive enough to catch my son crying from 3 floors below. Great for voice recording. Versatile enough to accomodate male, female, trained, and novice speakers. The so-called voice-over "industry standard" Shure SM7 dynamic mic I spent twice as much for has nothing on it. Right up there with the bigger ticket Shure condensers I use. Maybe a slight mid-range 'honk' in some applications but a little tweaking of the mic's numerous features and external processing overcomes it easily enough. If you're on a budget and trying to bring presence to digital recordings you can't beat it.

Absolutely Beautiful....

Very simply put through an ART TUBE MP Project Series Preamp into an M-Audio 0404 USB into a laptop and I was completely impressed. So Warm and Clear! I was amazed at the quality I got for the $$$. No need for tons of effects all over the vocals to make up for crap quality. I couldn't be more satisfied. I'd recommend this to anyone with a project studio.

Phenomonal

By sawz all

from Chicago & Phoenix

I was skeptical initially based on the price, but hopeful because of AKG's past successes and the fantastic fit/finish upon observation. I bought one of the first few Perception 200's before there were any peers reviews to be had. I could not be happier. This microphone has the frequency response, noise floor, tonal qualities, character and durability of a $1500 microphone. If you were to substitute your U87 for this mic, your project would not suffer. Sure you will notice some difference, but it is that high quality that your project would still be completely pro quality and release-ready. In fact, a little bird told me that an in-demand engineer that can afford any setup he prefers, has lately been using a perception 200 into an art tube mp project w/JJ-Tesla Gold 12ax7. Instead of his Manleys and SJ custom Neumanns + Avalons.....True ? Dunno, but the perception 200 could definetely stand up to it. GET THIS MIC!!

Incredibly useful!

By GendlemanJonHollister

from Chicago, IL

I was looking for a nice vocal condensor and settled on a rods, but ended up buying this instead based on the advice of somebody at guitar center. I give it an 8 for value since I hear the MXL condensers sound about as good for a lower price, but this mic is teriffic. Excellent for acoustic guitar, vocals obviously, room ambience for drums, and especially useful for some nice natural room verb a few meters away from a guitar amp.

small studio use

By writerguy

from houston, tx

I use this mic for vocals, acoustic/elecrtic guitars, drums, harmonica, and various shakers. I run it through my Boss br-900, which has an ok preamp. On vocals I can't find the right spot-because it's got a lot of mid range in it, and I'm a dynamic singer. The result is not too good, even with compression. I have made gotten some good vocal tracks with it but that was with steady ballads. Other than that this mic is very versatile. The acoustic guitars are full and rounded. Tambourine is clear. It does pick some upbackground noise, but not that much. I recorded some hand clapping to test the mic out and ended up using it in a song because of the realness. This is one of the best mics in its price range and could compete with mics around the 300$ area.

Buying this best was one of the greatest achievements of my life. Not only did it improve my quality of sound but also improved the sound quality. It is my favorite mic and if I could I'd be a zillion. Clean, crisp, and great for instrumentals.

Decent

By fretmaster

from Putnam County, NY

In a recording, I know what I am looking for. I recorded acoustic guitar with this mic alone, and to me it feels like its missing something. It is an electric/acoustic, so I recorded the track with the condenser and the direct line in from the guitar, and I'd have to say it is very clear. The condenser adds so much to the track, but it still needs the direct line to sound good. I tried micing overhead drums, and it didnt turn out too well, which dissapointed me. I have had no problems with the shockmount, but if i had, I would just stick something in between the two pieces to hold the mic in position. For vocals, it should be good, and I havn't tried micing a guitar cab with it yet, but I suppose it should be decent. One thing I wish it had was a selectable polar pattern.

Happy owner

By Anonymous

This seems to be filling my needs for my home recording studio (M box). The difference between this and my other condenser mikes is appreciable. I probably won't ever spring for a top of the line condenser but for the money I am happy.
