    Alesis 12R Review

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 12R Rack Mixer:

I just received 2 of these units to submix my drums (yes, I need all those channels!) I used a Behringer UB2442FX-Pro for about 7 years and never liked the "IMP"s. So when I lost a channel (and the headphone pots were shot years ago) I decided to switch to rack-mounted units to go in my Mighty Gig Rig. Between the Alesis 12R and the Behringer RX1202, I knew the Alesis would be higher quality than the IMPs. I immediatly heard the difference--much cleaner. Even my cheap mics sounded better, cleaner, tighter. The first unit got my 8 toms, auxed (post) to a reverb and then sent to the second unit where they meet my bass, snare, overheads and triggers. Those are auxed (post) to another fx unit. I'm using the pre aux to send the second unit's bass, snare, overheads and triggers to the same reverb as the first unit, so it folds back to the second and "busses" it all together for a more unified sound. I still have the pre aux on the second unit as another send and 4 mic inputs and a couple stereo ins for expansion, which I will certainly use with my keyboard and other stuff. I can finally mic some percussion and my side snare! Without any EQ, the kit already sounds awesome. My only complaint is that the phantom power indicator light on the 2nd unit doesn't stay on. It lights when the unit it turned on but then goes out. It is providing power, however and I don't want to go through the hassle of exchanging the unit after getting it all set up. A lesser issue is that EQ is very limited--2 fixed bands at 12khz and 80hz, +/- 15dB. Personally, tuning drums correctly makes this limitation ok, though I do wish I had a little more range with the kick and snare. If you record digitally, you can fix it there. If not, you're a bit limited. I like to go flat as much as possible anyway.
Great pres, tight sound. Immediately better than the IMPs from Behringer. No frills with unnecessary fx, etc. Could use more EQ options beyond 2 band (12khz and 80hz, +/- 15dB) and perhaps one more pre aux send but the post can do the same thing if you don't need to individually monitor each channel. It doesn't offer a million options, but it does what it is designed to do very well.
Phantom Power light on one-of-two units I bought seems to have a short; power is provided, however. Knobs and sliders feel solid, jacks are good.
Does what I want at a good price. If you don't need crappy effects, a bunch of sends/eqs/etc., but a stable, solid, clean-sounding machine, this suits the bill.

    Needs better construction

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 12R Rack Mixer:

I purchased this mixer because I need a rackmount DJ style like device. However, the first shipment came as damaged. The coil was so heavy it broke off from the internal wall secured by a screw with a fitting on case. So I had to have it returned. The second one came as the same thing! Luckily I was able to replace the right wall with the left wall on the case. I think it must be the UPS that throws around the box but Alesis should pay more attention to their product. Overall I like it, I think people will if they can get over the coil problem.

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 12R Rack Mixer:

I use it as my personal gig rig, mounted on rack. I use a Midiverb 4 as my programmable FX for sax (a Beta 98H/C is my microphone); also use a Yamaha WX5 with a Motif-Rack as my sound module, it has 6 outs (L-R and 4 assignable) all them connected to the mixers. It sounds great!. Very nice choice for intrument rigs and home studio.

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 12R Rack Mixer:

      Pro sound engineer.

Use for this will be a small portable PA system. Meetings, fashion shows, auctions, etc. I like everything about this little mixer and haven't found anything I don't like. Pots and faders have a nice feel to them and the gain structure is perfect on the faders with the output at unity gain full up. Bus arrangement is simple with both pre-post, with patch inserts on each channel. Phantom power works and it's quiet. Great sounding electronics in it too.

Not much else to add here - great piece and perfect for my needs.
