First off, I look at this unit as more of an interface than a mixing board. Having said that here's an updated review (I left one 3 years and 9 months ago).
I've been using this board (abusing really) for almost 4 years and it has been extremely durable!!
Sure it's missing a lot of features that would make it stand out but it really is a great board. I now have the presonus firestudio2626 and a digimaxfs but still use this for the preamps. I can't help it, I love the way vocals sound through this thing! I've used some JoeMeeks preamps here and there and so what. This thing has done it's job making great recordings and I've used it live over 50 times at least.
I also ran an Internet radio show for about a year and a half with it. I've done recordings just off of this with no other preamps that still get regular radio play and sound awesome! I would never have upgraded to presonus if Alesis would have been smart about this unit and added more output channels!!! That's the only thing this unit needs. If it had a good 4 to 6 stereo outs (8 to 12 monos) instead of just the stereo pair It could be perfect. I've had trouble over the years being able to route things out of my DAW in the ways that I want. I'm hoping they upgrade this unit in the near future with more features and outs, otherwise I'll be getting a Presonus Studiolive. Because let's face it the multimix16 has the potential to be a very powerful rival against some of the best interfaces out there!
It's lost a few slider knobs and some of the metal posts that the slider knobs fit on have bent. But, they all still work! which to me yells quality. It was because of my neglect that there are damages but it's their quality that has kept it working.

After nearly 2 years with this unit now, I have some advice for you. Find another interface. First, mine had to go in for service within a couple months. Their "service" is 3rd party, not Alesis themselves, and their phone customer service is pretty bad. Secondly, while I was trying to get mine to work (which included buying not one but TWO different dedicated PC's to try it with), they had a statement on their website that they would NEVER make Win Vista or 64bit drivers (the comment has since been removed). So I bought a Win XP laptop just to use with this, finally get all 16 channels up at once....And many of the channels were noisy. In a 1-yr-old mixer/interface. Simply UNACCEPTABLE. Now I have a Win 7 64bit machine, and just use this is a mixer (on the 4 channels that don't make too much noise) and use an Echo AudioFire 2 for interfacing. I'll be buying a PreSonus FireStudio Tube and selling this (with operational disclosure) on eBay, probably for parts, if there's anything good left in it. After their lackluster support, HORRIBLE driver support and incredibly bad quality issues on this unit, I'm off Alesis (and newly-acquired Akai) for life.

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 16 USB 2.0 16-Channel Mixer:

This unit is a big hassle unless your using it as a live mixer only. The preamps and onboard effects are not bad, but in this price range I'm sure there are better sounding boards. If you plan on using this as an audio interface and you have a win7 64 bit system forget about it. Alesis has discontinued the product and made no real efforts to develop the platform to make this unit work properly with win7 let alone win8. They have the worst customer support in the industry. Steer clear of this or you will just be returning it as I did.

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 16 USB 2.0 16-Channel Mixer:

The only negatives with this mixer are the external power supply and the limited EQ, other that these two Items the unit works and sounds great. Alesis has released new drivers and works well with even Snow Leopard on Mac. I don,t use PC systems so I can't comment on that it does couple with Mac Garage Band witch is not amateur anymore ex. 4 band parametric EQ all channels etc. It also works well with a live band just be aware of limited EQ and learn to work around that. The effects work very well for live as most live just requires good vocal reverb. Records without the effects as you usually add these after recording.

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 16 USB 2.0 16-Channel Mixer:

Does what it should - allows you to record 16 channels at once to your computer. They sound fantastic. If you can get a good sound to this mixer (good mics, gates, etc) you can make a CD or MP3 quality recording. The Alesis exceeded my expectations.

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 16 USB 2.0 16-Channel Mixer:

I have had this for about 3 months and its old technology already. It is useless on my new computer running 64 bit vista. I cant download new drivers because they dont exist. while on my old computer running xp recording sounded great best of any equipment Ive owned but make sure you have 32bit vista or less xp to run this board. Its now an orniment on my desk. a very expensive investment down the drain until alesis makes the new drivers needed to run it.

This mixer is awesome!!! Yesterday I recorded my band's 90 minute show (16 tracks) with no pops or cracks... I'd recommend it for studio or live recording. Wish it had 16 preamps...

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 16 USB 2.0 16-Channel Mixer:

this board is great! I use it for a home recording interface and have also used it for live shows. It works great! I've recorded all 18 channels at once using cubase sx3 with no problems at all. The usb 2.0 connection is easy as it gets. i had it out of the box and recording within minutes. i would like to go with 2 presonus digimax but for the price of the alesis you can't go wrong! the only thing I don't like about this board is the knobs and faders are flimsy. you have to be careful. also, if you do any kind of volume or eq adjustments during recording it records that. So I now do my levels and eq's through cubase when in a live situation and recording. Buy this unit if you want to have a great home studio.

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 16 USB 2.0 16-Channel Mixer:

At first great recording....year and a half into owning the mixer, it crackles and stops working.
Warranty out, 3rd party repair, customer service is horrible....= 700 dollar paper weight.

Save your money.

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 16 USB 2.0 16-Channel Mixer:

This is an amazing product. The only porble, I have is the lack of inputs for my 14 mic set up for my drm set, even though it IS 16 channels. Only 8 of them are xlr.. so I might have to buy one of the cool little multi mix 8 guys to work along side this one. Everything else of this mixer is incredable smooth, and works hassle free. I also come with cubase le4, which is an amzing, especially of an LE!! Far better that protools le.

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 16 USB 2.0 16-Channel Mixer:

I got it, 1 minute ro install it. and there you go. I use acid 6.o and cubase sx3. It comes with cubase le and I have to admit I've never used it so I don't know how many tracks it will allow at once. I did record 18 tracks at one time and they came out great. The only thing that I don't like about this unit is how flimsy the knobs are. Just be gentle. also if you can't do any volume adjustments during recording on the mixer without it recording that way. You can on your program but not the mixer. Also it would have ben nice if they had made this with a midi in and out. Oh well.I love this machine and for the price it just can't be beat.

Drivers Need A Bit Of Tweeking

By Samuel Kofi Attah

from Ghana

Comments about Alesis MultiMix 16 USB 2.0 16-Channel Mixer:

The Multimix16usb2.0 is a good compact multi-mixer, either for mobile recording, or for the studio. However, its drivers doesn't integrate well with Steinberg's WaveLab 5, making it impossible to multi-track record in WaveLab 5 using the audio montage. Hope the bug would be fixed in the next driver release.
