Stops recording randomly - Alesis support is terrible

Features:

I give 5 on features because it is a basic device, but I knew that when I bought it.

Quality:

See my overall description.  This thing stops recording randomly... and who knows if it will be important like your first gig or best performance ever.

I had one defective device, RMA'd for another and it is exactly the same.  I believe this is a design bug that Alesis is unable or unwilling to fix.  BUYER BEWARE - you were warned. Search the web, others are having same issue.  Firmware does not fix.  Alesis does not even acknowledge support emails on the topic.  Alesis made me pay return shipping on the RMA, and new device is exactly same.  So now I am out more money.

Value:

If this thing worked, I would give probably a 6 or 7 value since is is economical, yet there are competing devices that may offer better bang for the buck.  However, since this thing basically crashes whenever it wants, the value is almost zero since I can't rely on it to do its job.  If it wasn't important to me, I wouldn't be RECORDING it.  Since this is aimed at musicians, how many times do you think your audience will tolerate...hey, let's play that set again cuz my recorder stopped by itself.    Duh!

Overall:

First, let me say I like Alesis.  They have created some great and innovative products for great prices.  I own many.
Now... I bought my VideoTrack in Dec 2010 here at MF, but what I have to say here is about Alesis, not MF.

Overall impressions, the video quality is pretty bad, but I was ok with that.  The device design is ok, and the stereo audio is pretty decent.  All those things were fine for the price point... and if the device worked,  I probably would not be writing this.

I noticed immediately that the recorder would stop recording randomly. Could be 5 min, could be 30 min. I tried with the supplied 2GB card and also a high quality 16GB card for video that might go longer than 45 min (like a whole band set).  There were problems on both memory cards.

I actually lost valuable gig recordings more than once because of this (I know, I know ... crazy that I actually used it as intended...).

I went to Alesis' website and located the firmware update. I am a computer support person, so I am capable... and despite my exact performance of their steps. The device told me "incorrect FW" every time and refused to update. I can only guess that I already have the latest firmware, but there is no (known) way of knowing
since they don't tell you how to find it on the device screens and I couldn't find it myself either.

I sent at least two detailed emails to Alesis support and never even got an acknowledgement.  After several months, giving up and frustrated with the VideoTrack.. I decided to call Alesis directly.  I spoke to a rep that acted like he never heard of this problem before (yet I see it all over the web).  After instructing me that they would RMA the device (RETURN SHIP AT MY EXPENSE!) I agreed. I waited over a month... no communication. I emailed the tech support contact and he replied "shipping soon".

Well the device arrived about another week later.  I immediately inspected the "new" device and was already disappointed to see that it had a serial number LOWER than the one I sent back (I kept a copy of my original serial number)... I know this was not proof of anything, but did not instill confidence.  Seems like they must have a stockpile of old ones.. not surprising to me given my experience.

Anyway, to wrap this up... I unpacked, charged the unit overnight, setup and set on a tripod to record (pointed it at a movie playing on my computer screen for some non-still recording).  Recorder stopped after 5 min.  Test 2 seems like it made it until the battery ran out, but not sure because apparently if the battery runs out it does not save any file.  Argh.  Recharged.  Test 3 stopped after abour 40min with battery bars clearly visible.

I tried the whole firmware update process AGAIN...same results as original recorder.. "incorrect FW".  Same problems...I am done wasting my time!

I think Alesis has made a lemon and they are just hoping to sell these units to people who will eventually just give up trying to get them to work reliably.  I am way past the point of getting a refund from the retailer, and RMA's just cost me MORE money in return shipping.  I am done throwing good money after bad.
Thanks a lot Alesis...  I will remember this next time I have to to between you and a competitor.  I guess I can still use this for 5 minute movies of things that don't have to record reliably (????).

Don't get burned... I did twice on this thing...  there are others way more deserving of your money even if you have to spend a bit more it will be worth it.

I purchased mine for the on sale price plus the 30 dollar mail in rebate.  I thought for this price I'd try it out. I wanted a mobile device for recording but, my unit wouldn't charge its battery.  The unit would operate while plugged into the usb cable but, wouldn't charge up. I called the company and they sent me a zip file to update the unit, I couldn't get it to work so I just returned the unit. I should have listenend to all the reviews I read before purchasing. I will spend a little more money to get a better unit. ps/ I didn't use the mail in rebate!

I, like many others, picked this up on The Stupid Deal Of The Day. For that price, it could not be beat, still reasonable. I am not sure what people thought this was, but if research something before buying you would know, do not blame Alesis, or Musicians Friend, for your impulse buying! It actually performs, looks, and sounds better, after it is transferred to PC, or other viewing device. If you were planning on using a 2" screen, what did you think you would get. As far as being technically difficult, if you cannot take out a SD Card and place in your PC, or hook up the USB cable, you really should not be buying something like this anyway! The sound is recorded nicely, and once again on the proper screen, pleasantly surprised at quality of video. I can see at the current price, reason for not buying, but now, I had mine out of the box recording, into the PC, in minutes, on a x64 bit Windows 7 Home Premiun Wal-Mart special. So, do I recommend it, yes! Just realize you may have to know a little about what you are doing, but my 8 yr. old takes still, and video, and puts them on his laptop, all by his lonesome, just my two-cents worth. Buy it give it a chance, if you do not like it or cannot figure it out return it, but I would buy this over the competitors, just for ease of use, and price-wise. To each his own! Thanks.

Wow, not a good wow either. Okay, I went through 2 devices and both had the same exact problem. Constant freezing of the device and when it did want to work, the recording would stop randomly from 4-6 mins even if nobody was 500ft near the dang thing. stear clear dont waste your time. i went with something else but i cant get my time or my jamz back that were missed. dont get me wrong the audio is great but its pointless if the record function wont stay on.

I was not expecting much as far as video quality goes but was at least hoping for decent audio. The audio is ok when the thing actually works. The video and audio are out of sync.Tech support said it needs a firmware update that can only be performed on a PC. I bought it because it claimed to be Mac compatible which it is not. I used a Windows computer to update the Videotrack firmware and now its even worse. Hopefully Alesis will replace mine with a newer model. Something tells me that this item will be discontinued. Don't buy this thing.
