I like that you can turn on and off sections. If you only need some compression it workds creat for that. If you want to make your voice sound nice and full and dial in some upper freq clarity it's there easily. De-essing- simple. Big bottom and treble enhancement- thats where you can really make yourself sound like a pro. Don't over do it though unless you need to sound like a radio DJ- it can do that too. Pair it up with the right mic for the job and you're golden. You'll make everybody else look like amateurs and it's all in a little single rack unit.
This thing is awesome. However you use it- live music, public speaking, recording, voice over, whatever- if you plug your mic (condensor or dynamic) into it and do some quick knob turning you will sound golden. It makes a regular SM58 sound like a studio condensor on stage.
You can turn sections on and off if needed and go from subtle to booming DJ voice and everything in between. It's build sturdy and I imagine it will last a long time. It's a bit expensive, but compared to what? There's nothing to compare it too. If you bought all the parts (compressor, eq, bass/treble enhancement etc) individually you would spend more unless you got Behringer junk.
I can't imagine not having one now.

I purchased the Aphex 230 and this has to be the best all-in-one solution for voice work I've encountered. I use an Electro-voice RE-27 dynamic microphone and this unit really makes the voices behind the mic shine. With its easy to adjust compression, noise gate and de-esser, as well as the effects section (big bottom, parametric equalizer, and Aureal Exciter) this unit far surpasses anything I've had in the rack. If you're in the market for a unit of this type, be sure and look seriously at the Aphex 230 before you purchase, you'll be glad you did.
Well, there are a lot of features . . . I got this to use for broadcast/voice over only. This thing was supposed to be the end-all be-all for that application. I fiddled with it for a couple of days and sent it back. Big Bottom and Aural Eciter were cool features, but they did the exact same thing my BBE sonic maximizer does for less. As a preamp, it is nothing great, but not horrible. All in all, I got a much better sound out of tube channel strip and the BBE maximizer, for much less cash. The compressor is for people who don't know how to use a compressor, it is just one dial. If you need a gate and de-esser for a vocal live app, you need to find a new environment or new talent. If you are recording, you should be using a plug-in for those two things.
Seemed sturdy, didn't have it long enough to make a call.
This is something for people who don't know how to work a rack. You would think it would be idiot proof as simple as everything is, but I couldn't get a real nice sound out of it and I messed with it for days. That may be my fault though, maybe simple things confuse me.
