OVERVIEW

Richer highs, deeper lows, and clarity all around.

The Aphex Exciter and Optical Big Bottom delivers increased presence, depth, and clarity to your recording, mixing, and mastering projects and does it all with little or no increase in peak output. The Exciter's patented processes restore natural brightness to your music through dynamic harmonic enhancement. In a mix, this creates more space and dimensionality and gives individual tracks room to breathe. The Aphex 204 is a great tool for live applications if used properly. It should never be used across an entire mix. Insert it on your CD/Tape/PC Interface device to enhance playback of poor recordings. The Big Bottom controls are useful for adding sustain to bass guitar and kick drum, and the Aural Exciter controls can be helpful for brightening acoustic instruments that are reinforced using a mic or DI. One downfall of this product is that frequencies are not marked on the low and mid/high tuning knobs but are noted in the instruction manual, so unless you want to mark them on the unit itself, you?re stuck having to rely on memorization. This unit would also benefit from an adjustable bandwidth control.

Special Piece

I'm not really an "equipment is everything" kind of guy. All the tools in the world are useless if the operator can't work with them. This piece of equipment is huge. Submix the drums and run them through, in stereo. Then the bass and guitars and vox. The final mix is outstanding. Tuning each item individually and then mixing them down. absolutely fantastic.

the missing piece of the sound

Ask me a question

i've been a dj for 15 years, and i can't tell you how i wish i had known about this device earlier. i saw it for the first time in a showroom display friday, it was demonstrated to me, and i had to have it.i use it through a QSC mx2000a amp and a pair of phonic impression 215 speakers and it makes them sound like speakers twice the price. (and size) i get compliments on the sound now. it makes the highs clearer, without being harsh like an eq. and it adds bottom but not boom (what ever that song calls for)and it does it without robbing my amp of a lot more power! i also have a jbl balcony series theatre speaker system and don't really use the powered sub all that much anymore.the aphex makes the 4 inch woofer sound like a 10 inch! (that's right... i said it!) instructions are really clear and go into detail about the many different applications that can be use with the 204.this is the piece of the sound puzzle i've been missing! now my eq needs just minimal tweeking at most, and is set 90% flat. the tuning takes some getting use to, but you will know when you hit that "sweet spot" that matches your system and the sound you like.down side:you can over do it and splurge on highs and lows that sound extreme, but still no overtones.the sound varies from hollow mids, sizzling highs with well rounded full bodied bass to shallow and dry like a bose speaker and everything in between!

An Outstanding Product

By Eurotrash666

from Schweinfurt, Germany

Well designed, well made, well documented, and well packaged. I am thrilled with how much the Aphex brings out my sound. I can now clearly hear my bass through the two howling buzzsaws my bandmates call guitars. The big bottom has incredible push, but it drops off midway between my second octave. I still need to play with it to dial it in. The aural exciter feature gives a fullness to my sound. I think i lose a touch of the woody charachter of my bass in exchange for the extra transparency, but I am still working to dial it back in. For the price, I would like to see a built-in compressor and noise gate, though. I'm gonna have to stick with it, for sure.

Best Bass Enhancer Ive heard of!!!!!

By compugeek12

I have used this in a church with 2 flown jbl 12" with horn and it sounds like we have a sub but we don't. I used it in a gym over my pa one day which consists of 2 Yamaha club 15s with horn and 2 double 18" sub cabs and it sounds like I have a 4 clubs and 4 dual 18's and it doesn't tax my amps too hard either. Buy this you will be surprised how well it sounds. I run it just like it says in the manual with an eq coming out frome the mixer.

Black Hole...

Ask me a question

I've used the BBE 482 in guitar rigs for years and loved it, but always cocked an eyebrow at the color of the tone... the original guitar tone, although brighter and deeper, was heavily colored... I wanted something a bit more "transparent" but would add lots of low end to my 2x12 cabinets... I found it with the Aphex 204. A touch of the aural exciter and a nice mix of the Big Bottom and my cabinets rumble the walls without any flubby or muddy low end... very clear, brings out the best in the sound as opposed to adding eq... awesome product...

Amazing piece of equipment

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

I purchased this unit to brighten my sound system. Boy, did it ever. I also discovered some other good uses for it. I sing in a gospel quartet using soundtracks, and some of the tracks are out of proportion with one another. What I mean is some are thin, lacking low end and some are too boomy. You can put this device between your music sources and adjust those settings accordingly. Now, all of our tracks that were problematic before sound great. This ability of the device was worth the price by itself.

This unit will make your instrument sing. It will make your lows lower and the highs higher. It will clean up your tone and give it punch and sustain. This is a must have for any setup.

Now I can hear my Tone!

By Johnny Soma

from Fort Wayne Indiana

See all my reviews

Ok first off for bands that have tube amps, bass rigs, mic'd drums, vocalists, or do your own mixs then this is for you.I personally use the 204 in my guitar rig with my bass player using the 2nd channel. I can tell you if this piece broke I would buy 2 more to back it up. If you think you have heard your music then you are mistaken. The 204 at first seems to do nothing until you hit the bypass and then the WOW factor hits. You do not have a professional sound until you have run your mix or rig thru the 204. This unit can be used with any instrument or mix but I can only talk for bass, drums, and guitar....it is truly the icing on the cake and worth every penny.

this is a great little box

By The Dude

from kansas city, mo

I picked one of these things up to beef up my bass rig a little, and I have to say it does that better than I ever expected it to. The big bottom effect fills out the low end making it thicker and more substantial. The aural enhancer side doesn't do much for me, but I dont eq much towards the high side so I am not too surprised.I gave it a 9 on features because I would like to see a gain reduction knob on each channel, as the unit can boost your overall gain slightly. It isn't enough to be bothersome, just a little feature I would like to see.

I bought one of these per recomendation from my bass player. I first put it in my guitar rig, but it didn't seem to do that much for me, so I put it in my PA rig and POW! Now I don't gig without it in the PA. Even if you have subs, you don't know how good it can really sound without one.

Super product!

By Jack B.

from Ocala, FL

I purchased this piece of equipment based on the reviews and they weren't lying. Clarity, presence, and bass improvements are absolutely outstanding. What an improvement in overall sound output! I use it in my studio direct In/Out inline with a mixer to computer recording. Definitely worth the expense to make such an overall improvement! Thinking about purchasing another for my In/Out inline to Stereo Surround System.

Fried Chicken, extra crispy!

By Littleboot

from Chesapeake, VA

The 204 is a wonderful application processor that does not seem to overly effect the content of a mix other then giving it something that I can only call "Fried Chicken" at least that's the nick name I gave it years ago. This unit is one of those procesers that you can use on individual instruments, and the main mix and still be fairly safe in regard to processed sound. It's more like a Harmonic enhancer, it seems to bring out clarity that doesn't seem readily available with normal EQ. One more note, this unit has helped me warm up clinical sounding digital masters (tracks / songs) for clients seeking analog harmonics or warmth, and with vocals, stereo mixed drums (Snare, Bass drum, and whole kit) along with guitars (acoustic) it seems to give them this nice crispy presence without effecting the original source as to "color" the sound, it's a world renowned unit in my tool box!

Once you have this there's no going back. I use it for post production in my studio. It adds a smooth bottom end that gives space to the mix.

Must-have for voice-over work!

By TVP

from Pottsville, PA

See all my reviews

Solved my problems the moment I switched it on. My PC voice productions sounded a little flat despite a decent condenser mic (shure ksm27)and tube pre / tube compression combo (art tubepac). I got a tip about this unit from a radio mag and thought it would help give me the "production room" sound I was looking for. Man, am I glad I did! It immediately took my sound from chump to champ. My wife has a little less vocal presence than I do and she uses a slightly lower grade AKG mic and she sounds KILLER through this processor with minimal tweaking. All this without blowing the levels through the roof like you might if you tried to EQ the problem away. (Gasp! Like anyone would do that) Can't get some of the features to perform exactly like described (green light for bass peaks) but nothing major. Manual is well written and helpful. After a good mic, this is the best money you can spend to bring life and depth your voice recordings. Wish I'd discovered it sooner!

Excellent

This is the best sound enhancement I ever used. It does everything what it said. You don't need to add a subwoofer to your system, it will definitely improved the punch power to your existing set of speakers. I am an architect not a pro musician or recording engineer, but I can really tell you that this thing will make a difference to your system, it's like having a new & improved system.
