OVERVIEW

An affordable high-performance, 2-channel microphone preamp.

The new ART ProMPA II is the next generation in affordable high performance microphone preamp technology. Each microphone input circuit, with selectable 48v phantom power, features variable input impedance which can radically vary the overall performance of any high quality dynamic or ribbon microphone. The ProMPA II can be configured for dual mono or stereo operation with selectable mid/side mic support, summing the adjacent channel, to decode left/right signals.

The ProMPA II can operate at either a low or high plate voltage on the two integrated hand-selected 12AX7 tubes for wider variation of preamp tone and performance. Large back-lit analog VU output meters display input or output levels while multi-colored LED arrays, with average or peak hold, show tube gain.

Housed in a standard 2 rack unit space rack-mountable steel chassis, with CNC routed black anodized aluminum face panel, the ProMPA II is designed to deliver years of reliable operation in the studio, production facility, or on the road for live sound reinforcement.

A considerable numbe or ART preamps suffer from poor shielding in the power transformer which causes an acute buzzing. Our studio bought four of the devices and two of them suffered from this problem. ART and Thom Davis refused to honor the 3year warrantee. This company and the people in it build cheap, poorly conceived rubbish. Make your own mind up about ART but we will never deal with them again

Comments about ART ProMPA II - 2-Channel Tube Mic Preamp:

WOW... I just bought one of these Pre-amp units for my Studio. I had read reviews about how great this was, and it lives up to them all. I took the advice of others and changed the stock tubes out right away. I used the (Tung-sol 12ax7) tubes as recommended by other reviews, and they have proven to be a good choice as well. For Acoustic Guitar Recording you are not going to find a better sound anywhere near this price! Reallly great pre... can't say eoungh about how much I love this unit. it has great warmth and presence and almost no noise at all. Very Quiet and Clean even when cranked. So versitle, so easy to use... Get one for your studio!

Comments about ART ProMPA II - 2-Channel Tube Mic Preamp:

So, this preamp boasts it's a tube with digital ADAT and SPDIF outputs. Well, there's good and bad to this: The Good- it's tube, so it does sound warmer...especially when you play with the impedence knobs. The digital outs make this a pretty versitile unit. Quite handy indeed. The Bad- the tubes are extremely cheap. change them, but don't use grove tubes. go with maybe tung-sols. also i suggest 12AT7 vs 12AX7s.Also, the digital outs are ok...when they sync up. I have to play with mine for a minute just to sync up correctly with my Motu 2408. It eventually gets there and sounds fine, but it's kinda a hassle. The analog out sounds really good though. Overall, this is definitely a fantastic unit for the price. Maybe not quite high-end studio stuff, but really good for upper end home or low budget studios.

Comments about ART ProMPA II - 2-Channel Tube Mic Preamp:

IF you have a mixer, then you KNOW what your preamps sound like on your mixer. Do you want to bump up your game? This preamp will change everything. I run this through a mic pre on my mixing board, with the gain on that board mic pre at 0db gain. I use the gain on this unit, put the settings the way they sound good to me and WOW. since there are 2 tubes in this unit, I changed 1 tube in channel 1 for a Mullard 12ax7, left the stock tube in channel 2 to compare the two tubes. You will have to make your own judgement on what you want, but, I can tell you, this unit is amazing. I can't believe how much an external preamp can change the sound of a microphone...amazing...Bottom line, I can run this preamp through my board and use the processing on the board along with this preamp...I am amazed...what a difference in sound..

    Look elsewhere

Comments about ART ProMPA II - 2-Channel Tube Mic Preamp:

I tried various signals without finding anything that sounded good through it. I was better off sending signals straight to mixer's preamps. So I returned it.
Pretty basic features, the same as any basic preamp. Nothing stands out as better or worse than others in this price range.
The build quality looked good until I turned a knob and it came off in my hand. I had to return it. Too bad; the rest of the unit appeared solidly built.
I found the sound to be thin, lacking depth and body. The lows were missing, the gain had to be turned almost all the way up to hear it. And there was no audible "tube quality" to the sound, no warmth, no defiinition.

Comments about ART ProMPA II - 2-Channel Tube Mic Preamp:

Had to return first unit...analog meters not working...stuff happens. MF set up the return with no problem...as always.
Second unit arrived and was in good order. I already had two TUNG-SOL 12AX7 tubes and made the replacement. Is it an improvement? I don't know but I did it because others say it is worth it and I can afford the cost.
This preamp smoothed out everything I put in it. I was hoping for a string bass improvement and it was there. This preamp is a nice upgrade and would buy again.

Comments about ART ProMPA II - 2-Channel Tube Mic Preamp:

I bought the MPA for use as a preamp in my basement recording studio. This is my first external preamp so I don't have a lot to compare it to except the inboard preamps in my mixers. I find it quiet, easy to use and easy to get the sound I want for vocals, guitars and bass. I was hoping I wouldn't get lost in all the knobs, and I haven't had an issue at all. I pair this up with an ART VLA compressor and get some really deep, warm, natural sounding vocals.

I looked at a lot of reviews and I feel like this was a good value.

              • Vocal Ribbon Mic

Comments about ART ProMPA II - 2-Channel Tube Mic Preamp:

My favorite use is acoustic guitar DI. This pre adds a layer of complexity in the mids not generally heard from solid state pre's. Big, warm and almost punchy, especially good for finger picking and light strumming. Pops the acoustic forward in the mix. Not ideal for background acoustic tracks (better to use a solid state pre in that application). 2nd fav is vocals with a ribbon mic (in my case the AEA N22). Sounds sweet, intimate and vintagey. Definitely will find its way into my lead tracks. Fav settings are high plate voltage with impedance at 300 ohms (9 o'clock), +20 dB switch in and gain between 10 o'clock and 4 o'clock. Be warned, though, high voltage with high gain setting can burn out tubes fast. I replaced the stock China 12ax7's with Ruby tubes and it sweetened the sound considerably. JJ's or Tungsol's would also be good choices on a budget. But here's my complaint. Only 1 tube per channel. Any decent guitarist or tube pre enthusiast knows you need 2 or more tubes in a pre for it to sound best. Heck, the squeaky clean 1960's Marshalls had 3 tubes in the preamp. 3! Come on, ART. You can add MORE. It would sound richer. But they get a lot of sound out of 1 so I digress. Also, there is noticeable attenuation at the top and bottom of the frequency spectrum. Not sure if that's a side effect of 12ax7's or designed to reduce the noise floor. 12ax7's are noisy suckers for sure. All in all, it's a nice dual pre for the price and I am happy with it. :-)
