OVERVIEW

Improving upon ART's popular Tube MP.

The original Tube MP made pro-caliber tube preamping available to ordinary musicians and home studios. The MP Studio goes a step further by adding a VU meter for better level control and ART's OPL (Output Protection Limiter), which controls and maintains the output peak signal to protect hard-disk recording systems and soundcards. The VU meter reflects the impact of the OPL circuitry when it is activated, which allows more effective fine tuning of the audio signal. It is a valuable tool for recording in project and home studios and can also function as a DI box with impedance matching and preamplification for line-level sources. Includes a 3-year warranty.

I've read a lot of neagtive reviews regarding this unit being too noisy, and emitting static and hiss. All of this is true. It can give off the most annoying hiss/hum/buzzing sounds...if you dont know what you're doing. I almost gave this thing a 1 star due to all the background noise I was hearing. I also couldnt figure out why or how this thing got so many positve reviews. I started to wonder if my unit was defective or if most people just couldnt hear the noise i was hearing. However, after spending about an hour or so tweaking the settings, I figured out how to find optimum results...

TURN DOWN THE GAIN ON YOUR INTERFACE!!!

It was the gain on my interface that was causing 90% of the hiss I was hearing. And when I say turn down the gain, I really mean turn down the gain! I have my gain/volume knob just barely turned up, and it makes a world of difference.

ALSO...

I have the gain button as well as the phantom power button on the preamp pushed in (and the other two buttons pushed out), and it seemed to clear up some of the noise as well.

You also need to find a wall outlet in your house that doesnt make this unit buzz. It's susceptible to that.

Bottom line to make this thing sound good...

-Find an outlet that doesnt make the unit buzz.

-Turn the gain knob on your interface way, way, way down.

-Tweak the output/input knobs on the preamp.

-Adjust the buttons on the preamp to whatever yields the best resulting sound.

-Try to be patient!!!

(If anyone is interested in my chain, this is how I have it setup...

Sm57 running into the preamp, preamp running into my interface, interface running into my laptop)

Overall, im giving this unit 4 stars. For the price, you simply cannot beat it. It makes my overall tone sound much, much warmer. The quality isnt as flat as it used to be.

I purchased this unit to "warm" up the tone of my guitars. It worked wonderfully for about four months. When it worked, I had great tone and good control over my sound. I mounted it on my pedalboard so I wouldn't be vibrating on top of my amp head - probably not a good thing to do either way. After about four months, it started crackling and making all kinds of noise. When I took the cover off of it to check the tube, the ribbon cable that connected the two circuit boards broke (I'm an experienced electronics technician, so it's not like I went tearing into the box). If the unit were constructed with a little more quality, it would be fantastic. As it is, buyer beware.

waste your time today, by ordering one of these - order it, unpack it, plug it in, test it for 5 minutes, call for RA#, pack it back up, pay for return shipping, take it to UPS - ahh, done.

This thing is so noisy you can barely hear yourself. And the gauge doesn't work.

All I can say is after purchasing one of these, I now plan to have one on all my vocal mics. I have used it for upright bass and violin, as well as in my (reference only) live recording. Versatility meets surprising value.

Comments about ART Tube MP Studio Mic Preamp:

I have a DBX 376, a Studio Projects VTB1, and I'm about to buy my 3rd Tube MP. In my studio, I get compliments on my drum recordings, and one of my secrets (along with a Black Lion Audio MicroClock), is the use of these little ART units on tom mics. I'll spread my DBX and SP pre's out over kick and snare, but there's plenty of "bang for the buck" by enhancing the tom mics with these tube MP's. I've also used them on vocals, guitar cabs and direct bass, but now I feel the best match for them is toms. In this application, you are not asking this moderate quality unit to do more than it is capable of.

I bought this unit a few years ago because my Mixer is not so easy to get the best vocal sounds. It works great.

This my second Tube MP Studio Preamp and I cannot complain it is very smooth and soft and does not produce any static. For home studio recording and playing is excellent, I would highly recommend it.

This is the 3rd unit I've purchased, not because they break down on me, but because they are great little boxes. I use them for both DI work and any mic that needs phantom power. For the low cost, you really can't complain if you're expecting it to sound like some preamp costing thousands. It's a huge bang for the buck little box.

I've owned several... the QC is bad sometimes they are great sometimes poor... The main reason I have owned so many is the wire's that pull apart from the cover to back when changing tubes... Just remove the nuts from the front cover under the knobs when changing the tube... this avoids a lot of possible damage... Other than that the value can't be beat

These sound nice enough - limited application because they don't add much to the mix. I think the strength with these is for recording bass. Especially for the money. They don't seem super durable. I've been through several ART products before - they're sort of like the behringer's of preamps :-)

I bought one of these back in 2006 and haven't had any problems. I use it to warm up my vocals during live performances. I use a sm58 and I really like the warm tone I get. I replaced the tube with a tungston which made it even better. I do get a little hum, but it's not bad. For the money, you can't go wrong. I would recommend a better tube.

Very quiet. EASY to use. I don't know exactly how they work, but the sound is much better and more musical. Versitile and forgiving. Just start your levels at zero and gradually bring them up. These are most effective for Vocal, Bass and Acoustic guitar. Live or recording. Very solid
