The build quality of this microphone seems very sturdy and solid.

For sound quality, on the good side, this microphone works very well for high pitched instruments / bright formants. It adds more body to the lows and helps high instruments have more dynamic range. If you were just recording high pitched sources, then this is a great option.

On the down side, this microphone does not handle low instruments / low formants at all. That low boost it gives will ruin the sound for low instruments. It's rough sounding and adjusting the microphone angle doesn't seem to help anything.

So in all, this microphone is good for certain applications but definitely not low pitched sources.

Comments about Audio-Technica AT4040 Large-Diaphragm Studio Condenser Mic:

I've had this mic for years. It's a good vocal mic. Sax, piano and acoustic guitar are especially favored I do not use this with electric guitar as there is too much break up on the low-end, tone is affected. (Get out the 58's..)

Comments about Audio-Technica AT4040 Large-Diaphragm Studio Condenser Mic:

I've had a Blue Bluebird for years as my main mic for recording. Recently I decided I didn't like how it sounded on my guitar. The highs were kind of shimmery and it didn't sound like my guitar. It's not a bad sound, but I have a good guitar and wanted a more authentic sound. So I started listening to a bunch of different mic shootouts on YouTube. I don't have the cash to buy a mic in the six hundred+ range, so I was looking for around three hundred. A little higher knowing I could get something used for cheaper. From everything I had listened to and read, this mic stood out for my needs. A clear recording that is representative of what's being played/sung. Huge bonus: it was on sale here for two twenty five. Traditionally three hundred. So I got it! I've recorded my guitar a bunch already and I love how it comes accross. Very similar to what I hear in the room. I've done a little bit of vocal recording and I like it better than my bluebird as well. For reference, I have a high baritone voice and my singing style is fairly aggressive. The mic works great for me. I'm sure I'll still use the bluebird for some things, but much less now. A word of caution: the 4040 does not hide mistakes at all. If I waver on a note, or sing something a little sloppy, the bluebird seemed to cover over those things a little better. The 4040 requires precision. It's probably a good thing though.

Product is amazing for this price. Well thought out. Great for voiceovers and recording. I am a live streamer on Twitch and I use this as my daily driver for my weekly streams. I have never had a problem with it. Bass is great, and all other sound sounds crisp and clear. A LOT better than my previous, clip-on mic. Top of the line for under $500 - $800 I would say

This has become my favorite mic in it's price range, for sure. I started using this for vocals and haven't looked back. The response is very crispy, a great high-mid responsiveness and it's high-end is a makes it sound just the perfect amount of airy. If you don't like that, you can always dial back the the highs using an EQ. All-in-all it makes a great vocals vocal mic. If you get a pair, it makes for a great spaced pair set for the drums or even piano. It captures the low-end nicely, as well. Versatile mic. Recommend for any studio.

Comments about Audio-Technica AT4040 Large-Diaphragm Studio Condenser Mic:

This microphone finds its way into every one of my studio projects, usually as an acoustic instrument or background vocal mic. This mic has a very flat low-end and mid range response which can make it boomy for bass-heavy sources. Luckily, there is a high pass filter built in which is extremely useful for such occasions. There is also a -10dB pad which is useful when recording very hot sources. These two switches really improve the value of this microphone.
This microphone's frequency response also includes two boosts in the upper registers, which give it a bit of airiness. This can sound pleasing or not, depending on the timbre of the source.
For the money, it's a winner. It's not ideal for everything but a welcome addition to your studio locker which will find some use in your recording projects.

I wanted a good condenser mic for my home studio. I know this mic is possibly a bit excessive for such application. Anyway with AT4040 I've got everything I hoped for: well assembled mic providing smooth and detailed sound. I'm absolutely happy with this purchase. Please note the tone of this mic is true to life. So if you expect any kind of coloration it won't do it for you. But that's what I wanted to get. This is a great studio mic that worth every cent of its price. Highly recommended!

Here is the deal with this mic, EXPERIMENT WITH PLACEMENT in relation to vocals. I've had artists so accustomed to being right up on the mic during recordings, they insisted on doing so with this mic. Bad idea. I have found that with this mic and vocal capturing, put a little distance between artist and mic and you should be pleased with it's quality. I use this mic and an older ADK A-51 and I must say that my 4040 gets the most work.
