PLEASE READ!!! I've seen several reviews that only gave a 1 star rating, yet their review talked about how much they loved these headphones. In case you don't know; a 5 star rating is better than a 1 star. When you give a 5 start rating your saying the product is great, just as a 1 star means you don't like it at all. Having said that, I gave these a 4 star simply due to needing more on the bass end. Other than that, it is a very good set of headphones, at a good price. Mine are used in mixing, or any other need for headphones while in my small studio. I've found that they work well with vocals while being recorded.

I am only an part-time amateur musician so take this with a grain of salt. These headphones sound very muddy to me. The bass seems to get more recognition that the trebles. The headphones I got don't seem to be very good for acoustic guitar or harp listening. I got some Radio Shack Optimus Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (RRHF) headphones 10 years ago for only $50 that I have liked much better than these. I bought these because my the 1/4 inch jack on my RRHF phones was loose and my wife was barking at me because it was taking me too long to properly re-solder the connection. If you want a reference to the kind of sound I like, I tend to like the MXL 991 pencil mic that some people complain as being to twangy. Yes, I know the 991 boosts the treble, maybe I just don't like flat. Maybe I just need to try some EQ out and shut up. Anyway, I don't have a reference mic laying around to really test these phones so I am just wondering about their FLAT response claim...

I use them with a focusrite scarlett 2i2 soundcard and they sound great! just great!!!! the output power of the soundcard is pretty high but this ATH-M40fs handle it with no problem ; bass, mids, treble are played as it should be. Great build quality! I just got them and listened all kind off electronica music(d&b,progressive, etc) and i am very happy that i chose them. Also they are very comfortable to wear. I hope that i won't have problems with them beacuse i trust in Audio-Techinca quality. And one more thing : i think is the best quality/price balance for professional headphones with this technical specifications.

I can rely on these headphones whenever I compose music or simply want to listen to the nuances of music that I cannot capture elsewhere. They maintain a strong bass when harmonies become complex and allow the listener to focus on specific melodic lines while still perceiving the music as a whole. Comfort is excellent for what they are meant for and the superior sound quality has remained undiminished over several years. They work flawlessly with my keyboard. An adapter will normally be required for casual listening on computers. Excellent headphones.

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M40fs Precision Studiophones:

We have eight of these phones in the studio for tracking and two sets of ATH D-40fs for tracking drums. The M40fs' do not give an exaggerated top or bottom boost, giving a mirror image of what's going in, which is what professionals prefer in recording; I'm not exactly sure why some of the complaints were a poor bass end, if you want a bassy-sounding phone go with an overly-coloured dr beats!

However if you prefer to know exactly what's going to track, then these are your choice.

Can't believe I never wrote a review on these cans. I've had them well over 10 years. When they were damaged 4 years ago, I replaced them with exact same type of cans. Audio-Technica ATH-M40fs were much more expensive 12 years ago than they are today. Best use is mixing and monitoring - b/c as advertised, they are FLAT. Nothing "shiny" in their sound. For the same reason you don't buy studio monitor speakers for home use, you wouldn't buy these for anything other than mentioned above.

I bought mine at least 6 years ago. I record and mix my own records. They are very comfortable...I have easily put 1000's of hours on these. They're durable, comfortable and accurately represent my mixes to other sources truthfully. Once I get a mix that sounds good with these headphones, they sound great on every other source. I know that mixing for long periods of time are a no no, but I can go hours without ear fatigue. I will buy another pair just to use at home and take the ones I have on the road for listening pleasure as well. One of the few products that I have that I feel like, "they do make them like they used to." Buy them, they're a no brainer!

The M40fs are pretty sweet. They look kinda bulky, but they're actually fairly light. The audio quality is also very nice for the price. I also love the 1/4" plug so you don't need an adapter to use them with your equipment. Buy these if you're on a budget and you still want quality sound, you won't be disappointed.

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M40fs Precision Studiophones:

I got these as a gift, and have been using them to record some music with friends. First of all, they're very lightweight and comfortable. I don't have issues with heavy headphones, but I know some people do.

For monitoring while recording guitars, vocals, or percussion, these are passable. The high end and upper mids are crispy and clear, and there is a reasonable amount of volume.

However, for recording bass guitar or keyboards, mixing recorded tracks and critical listening, these simply do not cut the mustard. They do not produce any bass frequencies below around 2K Hz. Trying to properly mix and master a track that will sound good on other headphones and speakers is an exercise in futility.

That said, these are affordable and comfortable, and I've been impressed with Audio-Technica products in the past. If you needed several pairs of good-quality cans to get everyone in the studio hooked up to a headphone amp, these might be a good compromise. To the solo producer, however, I can't recommend these. Spend an extra 40 or so and get something that will reproduce your entire frequency range.
