ATH-M45 Studio Monitor Headphones

I picked up a pair of these at sale price and I couldn't be more pleased. These headphones are amazingly clear especially for this price range.

The flat, extended frequency response is terrific for precise mixing.
You can't always have a pair of monitor speakers available so the ATH-M45's make a great alternative.

I'm happy enough with them that I would pick
up another pair for full MSRP.
Enjoy
Under typical use these headpones should last quite a while.

I wouldn't recommend being rough on any audio equipment.
It would be difficult to find a better pair of headphones for the price.

I bought a pair of these on sale, and even at half price, they are a poor value. I am a big fan of AT headphones and mics. I own ATH-M50, ATH-M35 and ATH-M25 Headphones. The 25s I received with another purchase and only use in a pinch for tracking.
The 50's and 35's are both excellent values, as are the 25's, but at their extremely low price, quality isn't suited for studio use. I bought the ATH-M45s to add another quality set of cans to my studio, or so I thought.
The sound quality of the 45's are no where near what a headphone in this price range should be. The sound is thin, and bass is almost non-existent. They only sound marginally better than the 25's, and the less expensive 35's absolutely put them to shame. Of course, the ATH-M50's sound better, but that is to be expected. Build quality is typical AT, very good, except they do not fold for storage like the 50's and 35's.
My advice is to spend the extra money for the ATH-M50's or go down to the ATH-M35's, either way you will get better cans and better value.

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M45 Studio Monitor Headphones (Black):

Long straight cord is nice, cord end has stress relief, and the 1/4 inch adapter is nice quality. Good set of cans but the other reviews made me think these had VERY good sound quality. The A-B sound comparison shows me they do not deserve raving reviews. I paid a few dollars less for the sennheiser 2 years ago, so I think it is a good comparison. At 59.99 I will not be sending these back. Like I said these are good cans.
I rate these about an 8. Sound quality is not bad. A-B sound test with Sennheiser hd-280 pro...Sennheiser has a little better high range clarity and are a little louder than the ath-m45.
Again comparing with the Sennheiser hd 280 pro. Build quality does not seem to be quite as good on the ath-m45.

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M45 Studio Monitor Headphones (Black):

I have purchased two pair of these and both literally went to pieces. They use poor materials. The plastic comes apart and exposes the foam. Also the wires to the earpieces are exposed and easily lose their connections and are not user friendly for repair. Don't waste your money. The M50 set id a much superior headphone. You get what you pay for.

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M45 Studio Monitor Headphones (Black):

I just replaced this after 3 years of use. After maybe 18 months they broke due to a wire issue. I had to put a new tip on and one of the speakers I couldn't get to match the quality of the other after that. Then the synthetic covering started to come off slowly after that, where people would ask me why I had black stuff around my ears and on the side of my face. Now it's time to retire these things... and hopefully the DT 770 Pros I got will hold up better

These are pretty great headphones for the cash. I have had several pairs in the same price range that aren't nearly as clear and well built. Probably wouldn't mix a major record with them but perfect for any pre production or small scale recording. I've owned them for around 2 years and still holding up like new!

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M45 Studio Monitor Headphones (Black):

Highly recommended for those building a cost effective home studio.
Totally flat response for quality mixing. Cans rotate 180 degrees. The headband and ear cushions are thicker than most. Cans rotate 180 degrees. Nice snug but comfortable fit. Lightweight for long mixing and recording sessions.
Great fit and finish. High quality plastic. Tried the Sennhiesers, Yamahas, and Samson...these beat all by a wide margin and were quite a bit cheaper.
I happened to get mine during a sale, but even at the regular price they are a great value.

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M45 Studio Monitor Headphones (Black):

Not much to say other than they sound nice and flat. This was my first pair of studio headphones so the first thing I noticed is that they don't have the boomy bass of consumer headphones. Of course that's what you want in monitor headphones. The sound is super clear and plenty loud. They feel nice and substantial, and are very comfortable to wear. I think these were a great choice.

The Audio-Technica ATH-M45's are without a doubt the best Headphones I have ever used. The Flat response is perfect for the studio and the volume these puppies can crank out makes them great for live drumming. the only problem I have found is that the coating on the earpiece wears off after about a year.

I just got these one month ago and I think that for the money you get a really good headphone. I just left it up to the saleman to choose, and he did just that . Now I'm doing studio recording and mix downs, and I think thats what there best for. I don't think there for just ipod type stuff! No "t" in Mozart I know !

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M45 Studio Monitor Headphones (Black):

These headphones give a very nice flat response, perfect for studio use. They are also extremely clear, I heard things I've never heard in a song before, even from my expensive hi-fi stereo. I've mixed many songs with these and the mix always turns out great. I also use these to play along to songs while playing drums. They isolate enough of the sound so I can hear the music and drums at a good level. The reason I gave a 4 for quality is because after awhile the material around the sides starts to tear. But I can live with it these are great headphones.

Excellent Quality at a Reasonable Price

        By Matthew Spinks

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M45 Studio Monitor Headphones (Black):

I've had these headphones for a few months now and I have to say that they are simply amazing. I'm not a pro, but I have used various other headphones such as Koss, Bose, and Sony in my mixing and I wanted some better quality headphones. There are so many features on these headphones that I like. First of all, the build quality is excellent. I've played with some Bose headphones that just seem really flimsy and fragile. The Audio Technicas are well made and incredibly comfortable . I can wear them all day without any discomfort. The connector is gold plated and comes with a gold plated 1/4 inch adapter that is threaded for a secure connection. And the super long cable (I think it's 10 ft. long!) can be nuisance, but it comes in handy sometimes. The sound quality is astounding. Every little detail is brought out in these headphones. Even subtle sounds like fingers gliding across frets on the neck of a guitar, the bow scraping across the strings on an upright bass before producing a note, the pronunciation of syllables like "th" or "sh", or sometimes deep bass notes that I could not previously hear. The bass response is very good, producing good bass without any altered, gainy, or fuzzy sound. I enjoy watching movies with them because it brings out the low sounds like thunder. I'm still hearing new noises in songs that I've never heard before. Don't buy the Bose noise canceling headphones. You can get the same quality sound with these headphones for less money. And the are very similar in quality to the ATH M50s but cheaper. I love everything about these headphones, so do yourself a favor and buy a pair.

These headphones are UNBELIEVABLE! What an amazing sound quality they put out. Just like one of the other reviews said, you will hear things in the music that you have never heard before. I listened to some light jazz at a medium to low volume and could clearly hear every sound of the brushes on the snare (never even knew they were in there before). I could clearly hear guitar and bass string noises/slides. An amazing set of headphones! You can't go wrong buying a pair of these.

I must say I own a Audio Technica headphone which is cheaper and that is what I am using in my vocal booth to record vocals and I am having the same problem with the material stripping off and now it`s not so quiet but I have never heard another headphone top it in that price range so I guess it should be a good choice. A word of advice to Audio Tech take a look into the matter of the stripping material.

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M45 Studio Monitor Headphones (Black):

Great Value, Great Sound, Great Features, and I'm happy with them overall.
These headphones are a great buy. They feature a nice heavy duty cord that is a great length for home studio use. They feature a 1/8" plug wich comes with a screw on adapter to go to 1/4", wich is a nice feature. They have plenty of sound isolation to eliminate bleedthrough during recording, and have a great flat EQ sound wich is perfect for monitor mixing, if You must use a set of headphones. The highs are crisp and clean and will allow You to hear what You need to hear in those all important mixes. The lows are clean as well and not exaggerated like traditional headphones. If You do hip hop or rap these may not be perfect for You, because many engineers like a little extra bass in their monitors because the styles are bass driven. These do not sound as good as others I've listened to, but they are by far the best I've heard in this price range.
These headphones are built well but I do have a couple negatives to go along with the positives. First the good. They are constructed nice and seem pretty durable. The cord is nice and thick and looks like it could take some abuse, wich is great, cause I step and roll over cables all the time. The connections are gold and built well. There is padding on all the important parts. The plastic looks decent and not cheap like some. The negatives are that the ears are a bit more shallow than I would like, and don't fit entirely around my ear like others I've tried. Over a long period of time I can see these getting uncomfortable for those who wear glasses. The padding also doesn't feel as high end as it could be, and although I havn't had them long enough to see it peel I could see it drying and happening down the road.
By far these are well worth the money I paid for them, and If You don't have the money to blow on a 300-400 dollar pair I'd pick these up in a heart beat. I'm very happy with them, and the whole point was to be able to mix better when I have to be in a quiet environment.

I was in a jam and bought a set of these in 2011 from Musician's Friend (the 45's were new then) and really didn't do any real release-worthy production with them until this year. I mixed down 15 songs and played them on three different sound systems over the past week and the bass was consistently high on all of the mixes on all of the systems.. so much so that I couldn't tell anything about the rest of the mix. Bought the ATH-50x's today and did a side-by-side comparison and the 45's are wayyyy low on bass and low-range mids. The ATH-50x's exposed the same shortcoming in the ATH-45's that my car stereo, home stereo, and phone mp3 player exposed. I will use the 45's as a nice set for the recording booth, but I wouldn't waste my time using them for any kind of mix anymore!! The 50's are my new go-to's. Now to go back and correct the mixes on 15 songs....... !!!
