I just purchased a pair of ATH-M50's, and quickly exchanged them for a pair of the new ATH-M50x model that was just released (the main difference being detachable cables). I absolutely love both of those models, and probably won't ever use any other headphones again. That being said, when I saw the 'Stupid Deal of the Day' was a pair of ATH-M45 headphones for half price (1/3 of what I paid for the M50's), I did a bit of research and read that there was not much difference between the M45's and the M50's - so I jumped on the deal just to have a backup pair. Unfortunately, when I received the M45's I was instantly disappointed with just about every element of them (in comparison to the M50's). They do-not feel anywhere near as sturdy, and all of the materials feel much cheaper than the M50's. I will admit that the sound quality is comparable, and they are pretty comfortable - but I would not be confident taking these out of the house to use at a gig or even just in public, they just seem like they would break very easily if they are not handled very carefully.

Overall, if you are looking for decent studio headphones for monitoring, and don't have any intention of using them outside the studio environment, these are a decent pair if you can find a good deal - but for the full price, I'd recommend something else. If you can afford it, spend a bit more for a pair of M50 or M50x - these will not disappoint.

I will also note as many others have that these are STUDIO monitors/headphones. You are not going to get a ton of bass unless there is actually a ton of bass in the song. These headphones give you a realistic sound and are best for recording, mixing, and mastering. The M50/M50x are great DJ headphones, as long as you are looking for a true representation of the music and not just a bass heavy or otherwise enhanced sound. If you want something like that, try some Sony's (which also sound great).

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M45 Studio Monitor Headphones:

These are comfortable over the head and around the ears. The adjustable range seems adequate to fit most heads. The ear pieces swivel out of the way easily (perhaps a little too easily...but that's not a major negative). The most significant drawback in the shallow 'ear channel' and the hard interiors that press against your ears. If it weren't for this one point they could very well be 'all day' headphones in the studio. The cable is ~3 meters and relatively soft and 'memory free' making it nice to work with in that respect. I bought white as the deal of the day but would prefer black if only for the 'white showing dirt too easily'...issue. The studio is clean but everything against white is dirt.

I have been a musician for over 30 years and these are perhaps the worst sounding headphones I have ever used...so bad they make you think you have lost your sense of "good or bad" tone. I have about 10 sets of headphones in my studio at any given time and wanted to add these to my stable. I paid the shipping to send them back so that the bad mojo would leave my studio...horrible!!!!

If you have never used headphones before and were interested in these...don't. You are better off with ear buds...

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M45 Studio Monitor Headphones:

I started with a pair of very small desktop speakers. The left speaker was always significantly quieter than the right, leaving me to make constant adjustments. Then I got a pair of Sennheiser HD201's which completely blew me away with the sound quality. However, they lacked long-term comfort and durability. They didn't cost very much and it showed. Then I found these M-45's and that same blown away feeling I got from going to desktop speakers to the HD201's was felt all over again. I was only expecting comfort and durability. I got that without a doubt and even better sound quality on top of that.

The padding on the top and on the cans are spectacular. I can listen to these for hours on end. They definitely don't feel cheap like the HD201's. And the extra long cord on these is really useful. I was putting together my desk and was blasting some Zepplin and could get to any part of my room to grab parts and still keep these on.

Good buy medium priced. A T makes good stuff usually. Good flat response, hear parts within music not heard on 'home stereo' phones.
This set has about two inches of wire outside the rotatable ear cuffs. Bad design. But, if you can remember to keep your fingers from dc'ing the speaker wire, these are good phones.

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M45 Studio Monitor Headphones:

I was pleasantly surprised by these headphones and I think that's the best word to describe them... pleasant.

They offer a similar tone and vibe to my much more expensive pair of Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pros while sacrificing some clarity (the 770s really are truly amazing and great for mixing).

They're far more pleasant than my rather harsh sounding Sennheiser 280 Pros and ten times clearer and better to listen to than a pair of AKG K44s I got for about the same price.

The Beyerdynamics are my go to pair of headphones for mixing but for a studio that does tracking and needs to make sure your full band is covered I would snatch these up in a heartbeat.

This is a 5 star deal if you get them on sale.
