I went looking on the Audio-Technica site for this microphone and couldn't find it. A little research turned up the ATR1300. The M4000S is the same microphone repackage with an XLR to XLR cable. You are essentially paying for an upgraded cable.

The sensitivity of this mic is about 6 db below that of most similar models, so you will need to crank the gain a little. This is only a problem if you have less than pristine preamps or if the electrical environment is particularly dirty.

The mellow high end makes this an excellent mic for female vocals, especially for those with a bit of power. This also makes it a good mic for "bright" instruments like a banjo or fiddle. It's not that good at pulling detail out of most acoustic guitars, especially a 12 string that carries a lot of harmonics. For those you need a decent medium to large diaphram condenser mic (I like the MXL 990)
Run of the mill cardioid (unidirectional) dynamic with on/off switch.
All metal construction similar to the Shure SM58. Don't abuse it and it should last quite awhile.
Substantially cheaper than the SM58, but does not have the output level of the Shure mic. A bit more mid-range as well. This is likely due to the higher impendance.

Given the price and the branding, I would expect better performance specs out of this mic. It's only so-so for vocals and lacks the frequency response to be a good instrument mic. These are OK for starter mics if one is on a very tight budget, but I'd sooner pay more for a mic with better specs than use these.

Comments about Audio-Technica M4000S Handheld Dynamic Microphone:

I own two M4000S'. They are used for general voice PA announcing, singing and as a mic for my nylon string guitars. They work well. Low unwanted string noise.

Comments about Audio-Technica M4000S Handheld Dynamic Microphone:

I've now aquired 14 of these for my periodic events where many mics are need at one time. They have all performed exceedingly well for thier price point and have never failed. If by chance one ever got damaged, I'm not out a boatload of money. No complaints from any user yet,and the switch is a necessity in my setups.
Great all around mic. picked them all up as needed at sale or ":stupid deal" pricing or with "package deals", but would pay normal price if I needed to.

Comments about Audio-Technica M4000S Handheld Dynamic Microphone:

I bought three of these mikes on special from MF seven years ago and they have been gigged with, banged around, dropped and I used them in the studio and not once have they let me down. other mikes in this price range don't have on/off switches, which is another plus for this mike, especially if someone forgets to turn down the gain on the mixer.

Comments about Audio-Technica M4000S Handheld Dynamic Microphone:

For the most part, it works well. The noise cancelling was not better than the cheap mic that I purchased last year. But, it's still a good mic. The on/off switch is super helpful.
