I went looking on the Audio-Technica site for this microphone and couldn't find it. A little research turned up the ATR1300. The M4000S is the same microphone repackage with an XLR to XLR cable. You are essentially paying for an upgraded cable.

The sensitivity of this mic is about 6 db below that of most similar models, so you will need to crank the gain a little. This is only a problem if you have less than pristine preamps or if the electrical environment is particularly dirty.

The mellow high end makes this an excellent mic for female vocals, especially for those with a bit of power. This also makes it a good mic for "bright" instruments like a banjo or fiddle. It's not that good at pulling detail out of most acoustic guitars, especially a 12 string that carries a lot of harmonics. For those you need a decent medium to large diaphram condenser mic (I like the MXL 990)
Run of the mill cardioid (unidirectional) dynamic with on/off switch.
All metal construction similar to the Shure SM58. Don't abuse it and it should last quite awhile.
Substantially cheaper than the SM58, but does not have the output level of the Shure mic. A bit more mid-range as well. This is likely due to the higher impendance.

Comments about Audio-Technica M4000S Handheld Dynamic Microphone:

There are many more expensive mics to be sure. Our band plays 30 to 40 times per year in bars and parties. We have found that the sound quality and durability from these reasonably priced mics is very good. Break or crush one and it is no big deal. Keep and extra on hand because things do happen.

Comments about Audio-Technica M4000S Handheld Dynamic Microphone:

I got these on a stupid deal of the day, and the only stupid thing is that I didn't stock up on more. It is better for upper register singing/instruments, as it seems to lack a bit of low-end punch. Throw a little reverb in the mix, and it's a lot less of an issue. I would probably go with a higher-end mic for recording, but they make a great jam/practice/emergency backup mic. If you are on a budget, this might be just the ticket for you.

Comments about Audio-Technica M4000S Handheld Dynamic Microphone:

Im the lead singer of a great Rock, Blues, and Country band. My band mate bought two of these M4000S for backup vocals. These mics need a lot of gain and volume behind them to even be heard. Granted the environment is a high octane one, still these mics are not made ( in my opinion) for the kind of band that must have volume and energy. I may donate them to a church.

Comments about Audio-Technica M4000S Handheld Dynamic Microphone:

Just got the M-4000S free with my Musician's Friend order last week and I was very much surprised by the outstanding quality of sound produced by this inexpensive mic. Granted I haven't been using top of the line mics to begin with but this little baby sounds so much better than the V-Tech mics I have been using up to this point and I think it sounds even better than my friend's Shure SM58. I run it through a Digitech Vocalist Live-4 and it sounds so good with a little eq and reverb and I've noticed the harmonies produced by the pedal sound much more distinct and clear with this mic. I can't say how durable it is but if it survives the next few gigs I will probably order a few more to keep around as backups and loaners. I'm sure there are better mics out there but this mic fits my needs as well or better than mics costing two to three times as much. In my opinion you really can't beat it for the price.

Ok, ever had a high pitched singer performing with you and you just can't EQ out the treble enough through the house PA. Put away your 58 and grab the M4000S this mic will help considerably. I only recommend for performance. Not a recording or instrument mic, it lack frequency clarity. This mic has emphasis on the Bass and Mids ranges in the frequency spectrum. Truly an amazing mic for someone on a budget.

Comments about Audio-Technica M4000S Handheld Dynamic Microphone:

This mic seems to be well made and very durable however when checking it out I found that it had a LOT of bass and mids with almost no treble. My Sennheisers and Shures are much better for musical vocals. This mic would be good for speaking, lectures and exercise classes but not much more.

Part of a package deal that I purchased. I won't use them much as I have Shure SM58s that put these to shame as vocal mics but they will make a nice back up or maybe an instument mic. They would be good for spoken only events but not for vocal performance.

Comments about Audio-Technica M4000S Handheld Dynamic Microphone:

The first one that arrived didn't work. That's not entirely true. If you stuck it inside your mouth and screamed it made a little sound. But that's it. Otherwise it didn't work at all.

We were told that the mic wasn't functioning right. I had them replace the mic and the cable. They were sure that would solve the problem.

Second mic and cable - same thing. The thing is a complete hunk of junk and I can't believe I wasted all that time sending multiple items back and forth.

This is a great spare mic to have - especially when you need good mic for speaking with an on/off switch. It will also do in a pinch for backing vocals, but I would not recommend it for lead vocals. For speaking it is quite adequate.

I find the other comments here odd... One of my jobs is doing live sound for bands and I've used just about every microphone made for live shows (not including recording/condenser microphones) I can make this mic sound loud, full, crisp, clear as any mic in the box. So I'm not sure why someone would call it weak... (check your input gain and EQ)
My small problem with this mic is that I had a screw fall out of it (holds the XLR in place) and the parts tech at Audio Technica tells me, not only does he not have a parts list, but no parts for any microphone under 50.00 What? I need a replacement screw and you can't sell me one!?

I own two M4000S'. They are used for general voice PA announcing, singing and as a mic for my nylon string guitars. They work well. Low unwanted string noise.

I would buy this again--in fact, this is my second time.
