OVERVIEW

Wireless handheld with numerous protections against dropout.

The Audio Technica ATW-1102 package includes ahandheld dynamic microphone.transmitter and a receiver. It comes with an ATW-R1100 receiver and ATW-T1002 handheld dynamic unidirectional microphone/transmitter. Includes AT8456a Quiet-Flex stand clamp.

Audio-Technica's System 10 is a digital high-fidelity wireless system designed to provide performing musicians and presenters with advanced 24-bit operation, easy setup and clear, natural sound quality. Operating in the 2.4 GHz range, far from TV and DTV interference, System 10 offers extremely easy operation and instantaneous channel selection. Up to eight channels may be used together without any frequency coordination problems or group selection issues. System 10 receivers and transmitters offer an easy-to-read digital ID display.

System 10 wireless ensures clear communications by providing three levels of diversity assurance: frequency, time, and space.
Frequency Diversity sends the signal on two dynamically allocated frequencies for interference-free communication. Time Diversity sends the signal in multiple time slots to maximize immunity to multipath interference. Finally, Space Diversity uses two antennas on each transmitter and receiver to maximize signal integrity.

Consumer Alert:

Most users do not need a license to operate this wireless microphone system. Nevertheless, operating this microphone system without a license is subject to certain restrictions: the system may not cause harmful interference; it must operate at a low power level (not in excess of 50 milliwatts); and it has no protection from interference received from any other device. Purchasers should also be aware that the FCC is currently evaluating use of wireless microphone systems, and these rules are subject to change. I really love this unit. I got it on sale for less than $300, serious bargain. The sound quality is outstanding, indistinguishable from cable.
I had to have my first one replaced bc the faceplate fell off and in doing so, the two little wires that connect internal circuit board to the front antennas came off. Despite being very experienced in soldering and electronics, I couldn't reattach bc the connectors had broken. Luckily I had sprung for the $29 replacement warranty, and the process was painless and prompt. I wouldn't say the unit is 'flimsy', as it was a drop from about 6 feet, (and wasn't the first drop, but it isn't built like a 'tank' like Boss pedals.) It's is most likely expected to be in a rack (like mine is now).
The sound is *excellent*, I would say that my range is about 60+ feet, which is more than adequate, and I'll tell you why... In reality, a 100+foot range is useless. I rarely go more than 30-40 ft away, so 60ft is plenty. THe reason 100+ foot ranges are useless is bc at 100 foot distance, you now have about a 90 millisecond delay between what you play and what you hear. The delay isn't from the unit, as radio waves travel at 3x10^ meters/sec (speed of light ;) ), no, the delay is from the sound waves getting to you from your speakers. Trying to play with that much lag/delay, you aren't going to be tight, and will easily lose timing with the band. Similar to the reason you need monitors on stage. And, if you are playing on a 100+ foot stage, you will probably be in a higher price range, lol.
So, for the price, this is a fantastic unit. I would definitely buy it again.
Battery life, Definitely opt for the Energizer "Advanced" Lithium. I did some careful tests, and they are the best price/playing time.
Name brand Alkalines got me about 4 hours, the "Advanced" Lithium got me well over 20+ hours of play. So they are 3x the price, but easily 5-6x playing time. Don't go for the "Ultimate" Lithium, ther was very little, if any, additional play time.

My only issue with this system is the missing battery gauge, which renders it impractical for professional use. The manual states that a blinking LED warns when the battery power is low. How low? How much time before the mic shuts off? I have no idea - so you'll end up replacing batteries far more often than necessary, or you'll choose to live dangerously and hope the mic doesn't shut off while someone is speaking. If this isn't an issue for you, read on...

Because this is a digital system you'll need to pair the transmitter with the receiver. The instructions for doing this are right on the bottom of the receiver and are a model of clarity; setup was fast and easy.

The system has plenty of gain and no hiss or noise at all. The receiver has no power switch; plug it in and it's ON. Turning the transmitter ON/OFF produced no pops or noise at all - and you don't need to fiddle with a Squelch control to achieve this - one benefit of a digital system vs. VHF or UHF.

I used this as a roving audience Q&A mic for an outdoor meeting and was very pleased with its performance. The max transmitter/receiver distance was 100' and I experienced no signal dropouts.

The mic is plastic - as is everything else in this price range - but is at least as well designed as the others and significantly better than some.

Gain before feedback was Very Impressive - no feedback even when used within 6' of a speaker cabinet. Vocal quality was good for speech with an open, natural sound when used 4" - 6" from the speaker's mouth. The sound becomes thin and pickup drops rapidly after about 6", virtually disappearing at a distance of 12". As long as the speaker keeps the mic close to their mouth it will perform very well.

The mic's mesh pop screen worked well, no wind noise outdoors and no plosive pops while speaking. Handling noise was MUCH better than expected, not as good as a metal body mic but darn close.

The large power/mute button is cleverly disguised with the AT logo and is located on the bottom of the mic where it's unlikely to be accidentally pressed. The mic's display shows the channel it's set to and the LED shows green when the mic is live and red when it's muted.

With a more informative battery gauge this mic would be a no-brainer 5-star recommendation for light-duty professional use, as its overall performance matched or exceeded that of far costlier systems that I've used.

Other mics considered:
- Shure BLX24/PG58 (comparable price, not digital).
- AKG WMS (fragile looking battery cover, not digital).
- Sennheiser XMS (1/3 higher cost, not digital)

Comments about Audio-Technica System 10 2.4GHz Digital Wireless Handheld System:

I bought these to use for a variety of purposes, but mostly for speech. My wife is the one who primarily uses these and she is not a techie. I wanted microphones with clear signal that were very easy to set up and use. These have been exactly that. We travel with these and never know what the environment will be like. We have never had problems with poor signal or interference in the year we have had them.
The lavaliers are a little delicate and we treat them as such so have never had any issues. If your treat your equipment with care it will serve you well.

Comments about Audio-Technica System 10 2.4GHz Digital Wireless Handheld System:

I have used this once so far. Very good quality of sound. With the board EQ set flat, voice was full, intelligible and clean. Used the mic in a medium sized room (couple of hundred sq. ft.) out in front of the PA. With gain set appropriately I experienced no feedback issues. There was a fair amount of handling noise, but for this occasion it was not an issue. If a completely noise free signal is necessary, this mic would not fit the bill when used handheld. Stand mounted would probably be okay. I was using a VHF wireless also and experienced no issues with interference between the two. The System 10 met my expectations.

Comments about Audio-Technica System 10 2.4GHz Digital Wireless Handheld System:

We have a least 10 UHF RF systems at our church. Thought we would get a System 10 to escape the crowded RF of our area. Worked with it almost a year now. The receiver is mounted 20 feet, line of site, from the speaking position - absolute best case set up! Sadly, The system Drops Out on an irregular basis, the only good thing is there is no audible click. This happens when anyone uses a Laptop or Ipad on the podium. A smart phone in a pocket of the person using the TX can cause the same problems. Even tried forcing other devices into 5.0Ghz ONLY. This did not help. Tried a friends System 10 and had same problems. I personally think the 2.4Ghz radio in TX is not powerful enough. Either way this system is not ready for professional applications. Sorry, love all your other products

Lavalier model. Installed in small church, mic up front, receiver way in back. No interference, good signal, good sound. Lapel clip not as pictured. Wire spring on lapel clip that's supposed to hold mic lacks springiness, so just threaded wire through clip. Oh well. Set up easy, works great, good signal, no noise, no interference. Like the mute button feature on transmitter.

Comments about Audio-Technica System 10 2.4GHz Digital Wireless Handheld System:

I purchased this mic to DJ a party that would include some presentations. Several people would need to handle the mic for the show. Previous reviews rated the handling noise as minimal. The handheld I received had very loud handling noise. I could hear noise while I was holding it even with the gain turned down. Unacceptable!!!

The loud clicky mute button could also be clearly hear. It mutes on release so there are 2 clicks before it mutes. I recorded the sound to double check. I had a AT FreeWay (lower end wireless mic) that had a much quieter mute/off switch. This is not am improvement at 3x the price. Unacceptable!!!

The battery life was shorter than expected. I had 15 minutes when the LED on the transmitter started blinking. The camera mounted receivers have the transmitter battery indicator. Why can't these? Annoying, but workable.

Audio Technica, you definately "hit one out of the park" with the system 10. But it was right over the foul line. Get rid of the loud clicky and handling noise and I will buy it again. I cannot recommend the handheld system 10 at this time. Maybe the bodypacks are better.
