No good for drums

| Review By: Peter Savin | 6 months, 3 weeks ago

Features:

I like the form factor, small clip ons are great for drums.  A bit of trouble mounting on some drums, and the gooseneck wants to straighten out on it's on.

Quality:

Build quality is fine, sound quality sucks.

Value:

Somewhat inexpensive but produces a sound that's completely unusable.

Overall:

Short answer, I really don't like these mics.  Long answer...

Bought  a couple ADX-90's, as I've been  wanting to try some small condensers for toms and snare.  Had read some reviews that indicated the mics distort easily (some speculating that it's actually the gooseneck making the distorted sound), but I wanted to  give them a try anyway.  Bad idea.

I was eager to  try them.  Had a bit of trouble getting on clipped on to my old  Slingerland snare, it didn't fit the stick saver rims well, but I was able to get it to stay put with some fiddling.  No trouble on my toms with rims that sit higher, or on more modern rims.  This is about the  only good thing about the mics.

I always mic toms with  condensers (for recording) as I really like the added dynamic range,  detail, and smooth sound.  These mics do NOT fit that bill.  Set the  gain so the peaks were a little below clipping and hit record.  They  sound terrible, I'd be better off with a Radio Shack mic!  When  playing quietly they sound boxy at best.  I often play pretty hard, and  loud hits/rimshots distorted consistently, on both toms and snare.  Even with the gain set all the way down I got distortion, and not from the  recording itself.  The output level is fine, but the audio picked up by  the mic sounds nasty and distorted before reaching the mixer. On the  upside, off-axis rejection and isolation weren't bad.

It's apparent that these can't handle the Db's put out  by rock drumming, I'm baffled that Audix markets these as drum mics.   At quieter volumes they don't sound particularly good either.  They  might be ok on congas or other hand drums, or maybe hi-hat if you can  find a way to mount them.

They work on the right mixer

Got 4 of these for toms because my others just got in the way and my small AKG clip ons didn't hold.  The clamp is great and the whole mounting system is better than almost everything out there.  They are not the smallest mic, but works well for tight areas.  I had some trouble when hooked to an Alesis mixer.  Gave me a fluttering distortion that I couldn't geet rid of.  Was not happy but switched them out to a dedicated Mackie VLZ pro, not VLZ 3, and they work great.  Maybe it was something with the phantom powering, noise floor, or the headroom, but they now work great on my older 12 year old mixer.  I would guess that those who have problems with these mics, try a different mixer or use them on a PA that has mics that you like and compare apples to apples.

These are a great value to flesh out your microphone collection. If you need to record drums I highly recommend these microphones. They give a clear representation of your source material and are very small and easy to mount. If you or your drummer has any experience with drum mics, they will have no trouble keeping the sticks away from these tiny guys. you can bend the snake to mic two toms if you're crafty but the snake will bend back over time so you gotta watch it. also, i didn't buy these for snare recording but the isolation is great and it picks up a full snare tone - really convenient to mic top and bottom!!!

I Picked up 3 of these for $120.00. Look, they sound good if you know how to place and eq drums. They are very hot, if you do no have a pad on your board look for another mic, if you do these are a good deal. My only problem is that the cords have gone bad, ive owned then for 6 months and 2 of the 3 have bad cords now. That being considered I do 5 live shows a week minimum so im not too angry. Going to talk to audix and see what we can do.
