Comments about Audix D4 Dynamic Microphone:
GREAT MIC, WON`T LET YOU DOWN
Comments about Audix D4 Dynamic Microphone:
I have an OCDP kit.. the basswood kit to be exact. I use the D4 on my 16'' floor tom with evans EC2 heads and it sounds AMAZING. We just recorded a song that sounds really ambient so we needed a heavier sound from the toms. You can really hear the resonance but it still has that good soft punchy sound. And best of all, it looks sweet. It's got the red inside of it.
Comments about Audix D4 Dynamic Microphone:
I have been playing for years without satisfaction. However this mic even when the board is all the way up, with a signal booster in a cramped room with guitars and amps all playing, got no feed back at all and when I stepped in wow. the overall ambience was outstanding. this is the mic you want to use if you are not using a clip on. I don't know what can beat it. I have been a AKG man for a long time, but this one is the real deal!!!!
Comments about Audix D4 Dynamic Microphone:
I've been using one of these on kicks for over ten years now, ever since an old bandmate left one of these at my place and then moved away. I've never upgraded to a 'real' kick mic because I've never had to compromise with this mic. I wouldn't recommend it for kick in harder rock situations, but anywhere where a tight sound that borders on the low mids is in order (pop, indie rock, etc), this is a great mic for kick. Also, i've used this on its more intended sound sources such as tenor sax and bass cabs and it works wonders. All the past comments about not having to add eq are spot on, this mic has a great sound.
Comments about Audix D4 Dynamic Microphone:
I've been trying all the mics in my closet on my upright bass. For recording, the AKG 414 sounds great but isn't an option when I play out on stage. I saw a setup on a site devoted to bass where a guy covered a shure beta 58 in foam rubber and jammed it under the bridge of the bass with the screen right up against the body. Rubber bands attached to the bridge held it in place. I tried it and and the sound was pretty lame. Then since the Audix D4 is much shorter, I tried the same thing. Bingo, excellent sound that I would never have expected, especially since I would rate this mic just average as a kick drum mic. It just needs a lot of gain in this upright application, so an amp, board or piece of outboard gear with good gain on the front end is helpful.
Comments about Audix D4 Dynamic Microphone:
I have used this mic for a while, and really enjoyed it for bass cabs and baritone sax in the studio. It was good at recording high SPLs for extended time. I loved it all around until I went out and spent the money on the D6 bass drum mic. I recommend that for the additional 30 bucks (20 if you are lucky), it is well worth it to go for the D6.
Comments about Audix D4 Dynamic Microphone:
I like SM57's, still a great mike after all these years, but when I switched our sax player to the D4, he was in heaven. Natural beefy sound without EQ. It puts him in front of the mix when he slides in for close miking, but still warm at 2 feet back. Also worked naturally in front of our bassist?s Eden combo w/ 2 ?10?s. The D4 did for him what the D3's did for me and the co-guitarist. The D3 made my 73 Fender Deluxe sound identical out of the PA, as what I hear in front of my amp, pure Deluxe warmth and sparkle. No EQ!
Comments about Audix D4 Dynamic Microphone:
Amazing tone from kick on Live PA. We used this mic with a Yamaha Stage Custom kit on EAW PA and it was the tightest kick sound we had ever gotten out of this set. Just as good, if not better than Shure's 91. Oh yea...requires ZERO channel EQ'ing if placed correctly. Excellent buy!
Comments about Audix D4 Dynamic Microphone:
I've used this kick drum mic in the studio for quite a while now, and I've had nothing but great results. It's easy to find a sweet spot with this mic.
