I started exchanging micing tech.'s with other engineers in my area and someone randomly mentioned the i-5. I had heard a few recordings with audix drum mics and was impressed, but not enough to change from my akg's and shure's that I'd grown to love. I placed the 57 and the audix on a cab, made sure phase was right, and compared the microphones. I couldn't believe the difference. I-5 won in a heart beat. However, when trying another mic I recently bought, e609, that won on guitars. Now here's what the I-5 was clearly made for...the top of a snare. I put the i-5 on top slightly angeled (45% or less) and then the E609 on the bottom to capture the snares (normally I use a 57 for both purposes) and got the best sounding snare drum I've ever recorded in my life. I am not screwing around, it made for a great recording. Mind you I was recording an Orange County snare, and this could be different for other snare types, but it got the pop, the sustain, and the warmth of the snares from underneath.DRUMMERS! - i-5 on top, e609 on the bottom!

Comments about Audix I-5 Instrument Microphone:
This mic is awesome! When I first recorded with it, I noticed excessive snare rattle heard. After moving the mic 100 times, I settled on top head 2" above 1" in pointed center. In the end, I tuned my snare, adjust a few things and THIS THING SOUNDS GREAT!! I dont even have to make editting adjustments abouve flat... Coupled with a 7pc p-cad kit, my 8 pc sounds better than ever. Affordability, smackability and quality! Buy this thing, its the real deal. Just be prepared... it aint light!

Comments about Audix I-5 Instrument Microphone:
This mic, in fewest words, is... Quality, Durable, and Versatile.
My main use for this mic is used on snare drums. It gives a very clear
and solid sound, with a nice crack on the snare.
It's not too fat, not too thin sounding. Comfortably in the middle, which is
nice, and allows you to shape your own preferred sound, depending on your genre.
This mic is BETTER than my SM57 and 58.
When compared, the Shure sounds slightly muddy, and far too common.
The i5 allows your tracks to shine through a bit, which is nice, keeping your snare and guitar tracks clear and audible, in a busy song mix.
Comments about Audix I-5 Instrument Microphone:
Best snare mics I have ever purchased, i also use its brother mic the Audix f5 under my snare and blend the two. Make sure your buy high quality cables like Mogami cables. Cables make a huge difference, also another option is to custom make cables which I am in the procces of with my Drum riser. Just buy bulk mic cable off of www.partsexpress.com and high quality male and female XLR's. I have all Audix and never thought about any other brand. I currently use all the fusion mics on my rack toms and their famous kick mics on bass drum and floor toms. What a diffrence Audix really makes. The i5 and f5 really brings out my DW Collectors Series Snare.
Comments about Audix I-5 Instrument Microphone:
Ive had this mic for 3 weeks (LOVE IT!) now, wanted to put it to the test on as much as possible before reviewing. all i can say is that it reproduces exactly whats being heard. my snare sounds like my snare. my egnater rebel 30 cab sounds like what it sound like. this shows that the mic will reproduce with fidelity what its placed in front of. That being said i would have to say this beats a shure sm57 because of the fast that it does not modify the sound.
Comments about Audix I-5 Instrument Microphone:
I had tried various methods of recording my guitar and had no luck with any. I bought an RP1000 and tried to use the USB direct recording and hated it. I couldn't get a good tone out of the thing unless I was plugged into an amp. I then bought a Toneport UX2 to use podfarm to record and didn't like that either... I just couldn't find anything I was happy with. I then proceeded to buy a single microphone cable to try out my amps direct output and hated the sound! It was way too muddy and dry. I finally bit my lip and ordered a mic. I looked into quite a few and settled on this one. I had never used a microphone to record before and this mic made it easy! I have no more problems with getting good recording tones and I feel relieved that I can plug in my guitar, hit record on reaper and am good to go!
This microphone captures everything I want it to and nothing else thanks to the design. I use it to mic my Spider Valve 212 and it only picks up the amp. When I play I typically have a really loud backing track or music to play along with and needed something that would ignore the excess noise from the background and this mic does just that!
This microphone is built tough! I don't have a lot of room in my guitar area so I am constantly moving everything around and the mic doesn't show any signs of damage or use. I have dropped it a couple times, it has rolled off of my desk and I stepped on it once even... still works brand new!
This microphone does everything I need it to and I don't regret buying it at all. At first I was a little hesitant due to the price tag, but figured I'd get what I paid for. This microphone lives well past my expectations and I look forward to using it for years.
Comments about Audix I-5 Instrument Microphone:
This mic sounds amazing on snares and guitar cabs. I picked one up the day before a show and put it on my snare during sound check and I was blown away at how much better it sounded than the 57.
We record our shows from FOH on a Zoom Q3HD recorder and the snare cuts through the mix with minimal EQ and no effects necessary, with ghost notes and cross-sticks coming through cleanly. I later purchased an Audix kitSound goes in one end and out the other. No other features needed.
Solid, built like a tank. I have no fears of damaging this mic with a random stick hit.
For the price it's the best you can spend, period.
Comments about Audix I-5 Instrument Microphone:
A lot of presence for a strong nice snare mic without a lot of bleed. I love it on guitar cabs.
This mic is great for a lot of different jobs.
Comments about Audix I-5 Instrument Microphone:
I have one of these at home and i honestly it has a very well rounded sound. It seems to capture all the subtle details of whatever sounds its picking up. I have only used for vocals and its a perfect match for my voice. I sound very balanced capturing the highs and lows of my voice nicely. I can't say for sure but i'm pretty sure it would do a better job than an sm57 when it comes to snare. It seems to be bit more low end heavy but if ask me it captures a pretty good amount of highs as well so its a good mic for guitar as well. I think that when it comes to instruments microphones. This is your best be it is the most balanced one and its built like tank. Its quailty that is built to last.
Comments about Audix I-5 Instrument Microphone:
I have been using a sennheiser 906 for several years and have never been totally satisfied with my amp sound thru the mains. My rig is a Marshall jvm 410 with mesa recitfier cabs. I picked up the i5 and wow, couldn't believe how much better, more punchy, and less shrill my front of house sound was.
Comments about Audix I-5 Instrument Microphone:
I got this mic to primarily record guitar cabs, but I've found this mic to work phenomenally on snare, bass cabs and viola! It sounds extremely nice, and I'm now looking into getting another for stereo guitar miking, and for top/bottom snare miking. This is definitely a great buy, I'd suggest it to anyone who is looking for a great priced, great sounding mic.
