I purchaed the U5 after putting it off for about a year. I play a Taylor 314C limited and have never been crazy about how it sounds "plugged in". I am a contemporary worship leader and play mostly small venues on the side. I dont have the luxury of having a full band to drone out the sound of a stale guitar, so I wanted something to really liven up my guitar. The U5 is the best thing I've found, it's amazing how many low end subtleties it brings out and really makes the mids and highs sing out while suppressing the unwanted stuff. I was a bit skeptical based on the design of the U5, I mean you have two dials and a couple of bypass and limit buttons, not a lot of fancy stuff for you to play around with and tweak, but guess what, you dont need to with this guy, its pretty sweet! If you've been like me, stop putting it off, try it out!

This is a rock solid DI/Pre that has a few cool features that may justify the added expense over countryman DI. (tone shaping feature, speaker input, and hi cut filter) It is NOT some kind of magic box that will transform your sound, unless you're used to playing through some really, really low rent gear. It's super clean. That will be the big difference. Don't forget, you're paying a little extra to have the AVALON name displayed in your rack.

Comments about Avalon Ultra Five Direct Box Instrument Preamplifier:
I was in a local studio and the engineer hooked my bass thru one of these and I was blown away with the sound of my bass (stingray). It was clear, punchy and solid. I got one now that I used in my home studio and have used it to record acoustic guitars and bass. If you got the money I recommend this.
Comments about Avalon Ultra Five Direct Box Instrument Preamplifier:
Wow! It's the best D.I. I could have ever had. Their passive tones offer me incredible depth, clarity, gain and versatility, giving a rich tone of my bass. Just delicious and incredible!
Comments about Avalon Ultra Five Direct Box Instrument Preamplifier:
I am a contemporary worship leader and this has taken my acoustic guitar sound to a new level. I now run a BBE Acoustimax preamp to a BOSS CE-20 chorus pedal and then to my Avalon U5. Even though my acoustimax has a great eq with parametric mids, the tone control on the Avalon U5 just sounds better. Now all I do is pull back the bass a little and add the sonic maximizer with my Acoustimax and the Avalon DI takes care of the rest. Truly this is a must have for acoustic instruments, and from what I have heard it is pretty much amazing on the bass guitar too. It is really expensive for a direct box, but well worth the price.
Comments about Avalon Ultra Five Direct Box Instrument Preamplifier:
I worked in a university owned studio, that was of true professional qualiy. We had three of these bad boys lying around, and one day I decided to use one for a bands bass guitar track. I'll never record without one again. It's simply a "Make your bass sound warm and beautiful" device. The tone of your bass, and even regular electric guitars, becomes exponentially warmer through the Avalon. If you are recording electric guitar or bass, make sure to pre-run it through one of these bad boys.
Comments about Avalon Ultra Five Direct Box Instrument Preamplifier:
I first used this in the studio and was impressed. Then I got one for playing live and was really blown away. Every bass head manufacturer should copy its design. I got rid of my ampeg, mesa, and ashdown heads and use this with a couple of crown power amps to produce the greatest bass sound ever. period

I've own my avalon since 2004 and i won't play anywhere with out it. I play on americam deluxe fender jazz bass and the avalon makes it sound alot warmer and fatter. Once you learn how to use it, those tones make a world of a difference especially in the studio. I even run vocals and my acoustic guitar thru it, huge difference. if you begin to peak out on it or you get a distortion on it just turn down you boost to five. I play at a big church and the most I go on my boost is six. its worth it!!!!

Comments about Avalon Ultra Five Direct Box Instrument Preamplifier:
I bought this unit based upon rave reviews. I have only used it to record bass guitar (Fender P-bass). It's definitely not a bad pre-amp, but I don't think it has much more to offer than my Countryman DI, which cost me 1/3 as much. It has a nice, rich sound, as one might expect. However, I also have experienced some apparent pickup overload problems, causing distortion unless I back off my guitar volume knob quite a bit . . . never quite solved that issue . . . Anyway, it's a good unit, but is it worth 3 times what other good DI boxes costs? I don't think so.
