OVERVIEW

The BBE 282i Sonic Maximizer is a two channel signal processor that will benefit any recording or sound reproduction system. Whether you purchased the Sonic Maximizer for your home studio, P.A., DJ system, or instrument rack, you will find the Sonic Maximizer’s rugged construction and careful electronic design a welcome addition to your sonic arsenal.

The 282iR featuresfeatures unbalanced ¼” phone connectors making it ideal for interfacing with guitar, bass or keyboards.

The 282’s smaller chassis makes it ideal for DJ systems, DAW-based recording environments and space challenged live systems, as well as desktop applications, where space is at a premium and there’ s no 19 rack space available. However, the 282 series delivers exactly the same performance as BBE’s world renowned rack-mounted Sonic Maximizer products.

BBE High Definition Sound compensates for phase and amplitude distortion, restoring the brilliance and clarity of the original content material. The BBE High Definition Sound process begins by applying a linear phase shift across the full frequency range of the signal, which allows the speaker system to reproduce the transients and harmonics in the correct order. The BBE process then compensates for speaker amplitude distortion by progressively boosting lower and higher frequencies, and doing so within the context of the phase correction process. This efficiently creates a fuller, richer sound without excess equalization.

Desktop BBE for guitarists, bassists and keyboard players.

If you are reading this, you know what they do. I had one high end full rack space BBE just for my Live stereo main speaker system then decided I wanted to have the same sonic quality for my monitors but was one rack space short. I bought two of these. One for stereo mains and one for 2 channel monitor mix. There is a little quality loss in comparison to any of the full rack versions but not near enough for most to tell. A real good solution to conserve rack space and cover both mains and monitor mixes on a budget. Plug in, Turn on, Set knobs to 12 o'clock, Engage BBE, and forget it.

I've used 282IQ for a few applications and so far haven't hit on any that really sell me. Admittedly it could be in the said applications - so far I've tried Yamaha S90XS, Korg X50, and media play through to Roland KC 350 and JBL monitor/PA. Possibly because all my speaker use so far is powered?

I've still more homework to do with the device and will re-review if I hit on success.

Package is neat, all inclusive and arrived quickly, but I didn't get any magic from it when used with keys or recorded tracks.

Comments about BBE 282iQ Desktop Sonic Maximizer with Unbalanced 1\\4" Connections:

I have a couple of the Rack Sonic Maximizers, but these are much more convenient to travel with and set up. I velcro it in the back of my combo and run it through the FX loop or velcro it in the back of my speaker cabinet and run it through my head's FX loop.

    Mixed results

Comments about BBE 282iQ Desktop Sonic Maximizer with Unbalanced 1\\4" Connections:

Psychoacoustic processors by nature are meant to be subtle. In the case of this BBE unit, there is a subtle effect on the sound but there is by no means a wow factor. It does help with the dynamic range of a guitar, especially when plugged into a wireless system. The down side is that if can quickly cause your gain stage to run amok when applied too liberally. Any use with any type of microphone results in excessive noise even in a dead quiet environment. This noise is not present though when mixing down recorded vocal tracks. Overall, this is worth the sale price (but not much more) and results are hit or miss depending on how it's used and where it's placed in the signal chain.

Comments about BBE 282iQ Desktop Sonic Maximizer with Unbalanced 1\\4" Connections:

I use this gear as an insert in the post fader/master insert on my powered board for live performance. It's always on. I keep both knobs at about noon. I occasionally DJ weddings (helps pay for my Gear Acquisition Syndrome) and for prerecorded music playback, I'll set the low frequency process at about 1 o'clock, to boost bass response.
I have also used this in recording at home, mostly for guitar and bass tracks. I have run mixed down tracks through it too, but with mixed results. If the any of the tracks in the mix were recorded with the BBE and then the stereo mix down is also run through it, it can get a "little different." Not necessarily bad, almost like an effect.

Comments about BBE 282iQ Desktop Sonic Maximizer with Unbalanced 1\\4" Connections:

Back in the early 90s a friend who had a studio picked up a rack mount early version of the BBE and we were blown away by what it did. Skip ahead almost 25 years and I've since built and torn down a few home studios to turn into baby rooms. Well the babies started college this year so time to rebuild the home studio. This was one of my first purchases. I have a lot of equipment still remaining. I borrowed it to a friend who plays guitar and he plugged it in line through his fender amp and kept it for a few days. His comment when giving it back to me was that is for ruining my amp. Lol! Now this unit that I got on sale back up to its normal price and he's kicking himself. I told him to get it when it was on sale. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that I wish they had RCA, XLR and 1/4" connections on every unit for versatility. It can't cost that much more. I will use it as outboard gear in my rack for recording purposes so that would have been nice. But overall a great little unit that makes ur sound more full and present. Get it...

Adds a quick way to tweak your sound with just 2 controls. Very nice way to fine tune the lows and highs on your system. This unit adds no noise at all hooked up between my receivers preamp outs and my QSC GX3 power amp.

It is always nice to have a BBE sonic maximizer in the signal chain. Guitar and keyboard practice are much more enjoyable, and it always makes a PA sound much better. This is a fast, easy, reliable fix for blah sound.

An inexpensive fix for inexpensive sound systems, or deteriorated tape recordings, and other types of problems. The two channels can be looped back from left to right to double the process in mono applications or be used in standard stereo. The high low boost with phase correction can give a real nice sound to a over done mid range sound. a metal box well constructed, however the two channels are sharing the same control knobs, over all it works well. I would not use it for every sound application, but I do like what it can do.
