OVERVIEW

Two pro-quality sonic maximizer channels!

The BBE 882i Sonic Maximizer is perfect for pro studios, sound reinforcement, clubs, and other venues requiring balanced outputs. Designed for uses requiring low noise, high headroom, and +4dBu input levels. It provides either stereo processing or processing for two separate mono channels, brightening, clarifying, and adding fullness to the sound. Features 5-segment LED output meters, +23dBu headroom, XLR and 1/4" stereo inputs and outputs, hardwired bypass, and a bypass switch for comparison of processed to unprocessed signals. Single rackspace.

The BBE Process--"What it Is"

Loudspeakers have difficulty working with the electronic signals supplied by an amplifier. These difficulties cause such major phase and amplitude distortion that the sound reproduced by the speaker differs significantly from the sound produced by the original source.
In the past, these problems proved unsolvable and were thus relegated to a position of secondary importance in audio system design. However, phase and amplitude integrity is essential to accurate sound reproduction. Research shows that the information which the listener translates into the recognizable characteristics of a live performance are intimately tied into complex time and amplitude relationships between the fundamental and harmonic components of a given musical note or sound. These relationships define a sound's "sound".
When these complex relationships pass through a speaker, the proper order is lost. The higher frequencies are delayed. A lower frequency may reach the listener's ear first or perhaps simultaneously with that of a higher frequency. In some cases, the fundamental components may be so time-shifted that they reach the listener's ear ahead of some or all of the harmonic components.
This change in the phase and amplitude relationship on the harmonic and fundamental frequencies is technically called "envelope distortion." The listener perceives this loss of sound integrity in the reproduced sound as "muddy" and "smeared." In the extreme, it can become difficult to tell the difference between musical instruments, for example, an oboe and a clarinet.
BBE Sound, Inc. conducted extensive studies of numerous speaker systems over a ten year period. With this knowledge, it became possible to identify the characteristics of an ideal speaker and to distill the corrections necessary to return the fundamental and harmonic frequency structures to their correct order. While there are differences among various speaker designs in the magnitude of their correction, the overall pattern of correction needed is remarkably consistent.
The BBE Process is so unique that 42 patents have been awarded by the U.S. Patent Office.

I basically use this as sort of a direct box for my PA speakers. Fed from an amp modeler or mixer, it works as an intelligent equalizer. Phase correction is amazing - adds often-needed clarity - and low/high controls on each channel provide a good degree of flexibility. Balanced I/O is definitely a plus, and overall this is pro-grade equipment. Also, with appropriate A/B setup, you can run two rigs (one at a time) without replugging anything.I wish additional controls were available to tweak contours of various frequency ranges, but overall this simple-to-use unit makes an incredible difference in just about any sound - at the push of a button.

An important thing to note about this unit is that when comparing what the unit labels as bypass mode versus when the unit is inline, there is a huge difference in the sound you hear.

However, it should also be noted that when the unit is in bypass mode, it is not really bypassing the unit, but is instead greatly cutting the low end out of your signal. This is really marketing hype more than anything else.

Here is a really good and thorough review on YouTube.

Sonic Maximizer or Minimizer...You be the judge.

By james ivey

Comments about BBE 882i Sonic Maximizer:

I purchased this unit hoping to improve the overall sound quality of my small PA system; however, after extensive testing I found that it was nothing more than a bunch of marketing hype.
Unit is well built and the fit and finish is very nice.
If you are looking for and effect unit, it can be useful; however, if you are seeking a system processor spend your money elsewhere.

seriously by far the best part of the cake meaning of how it sounds. it emphisizes the higher frequencies and the lower. i feel that it pretty much equals out the sound for me. i love this toy. just to compare the before and after sound on the bbe proccess button is so much fun. get it people. only for those serious musicians that want to be remembered for such clean sound when you play in front of your fans.

Comments about BBE 882i Sonic Maximizer:

When DJ's are focused on mixing music we don't want to be worried about the sound. That's where this unit comes in. A knob for treble, a knob for bass. Need more or less of any of the two and this unit has the answer with the clarity that cleans up files with low bit rate enhancing your performance. But don't get it twisted, you still have to have a good sense of sound to to make the adjustments but when you figure that out it allows the DJ to sound more polished and less abrasive.

Comments about BBE 882i Sonic Maximizer:

This unit is an absolute must-have for anyone involved in audio production. I first purchased a BBE sonic maximizer years ago for a home studio set-up and instantly, my mixes were better, balanced and more focused due to the nuances the BBE process brings out.Years later I still religiously use BBE Sonic Maximizers for live and pro studio work and cannot fathom removing them from my signal path.

    The Sonic Cleaner

    By Anonymous

    from Undisclosed

Comments about BBE 882i Sonic Maximizer:

I run my full mix through the BBE 882i Sonic Maximizer in my PA rig. I have a 16 channel Yamaha passive board, a Behringer feedback destroyer, a QSC amplifier. I use NADY wedge monitors in my music room for practice. When I first hooked up the Maximizer I thought "OK this thing just is an EQ that boosts bass and treble...big deal." But then I realized that there truly was added clarity to both ends. I have a Yamaha DTS II Xtreme e-drum kit which sounds great in headphones. I didn't like how it sounded through the PA - cymbals were fuzzy and dull. With the Maximizer it restored the sound, making it just as clear as the headphones. NADY are definitely cheap speakers and the Maximizer did the trick in cleaning up the sound. I have not tried it yet with my EV speakers to see if there is a difference with higher end speakers. Overall, I would recommend it. You might consider getting one of the cheaper versions unless you absolutely need the XLR connections.

We have run the 882i in our PA twice now anb both times listeners described our sound, especially vocals as 'extremely clear'. Another listener said that it was the best PA sound that he had ever heard in that club. I used this to replace an older BBE unit. The new 882i has XLR's in/out while the older one didn't.

I recently bought this rack unit and it's nothing less than amazing. It really shapes your tone and gives it a pro sound like some of the pros get. I enjoy it a lot and it works well with all types of music too. It is hard to find a piece of gear that does that but this little devil sure paacks a punch! It also boosts your volume up. I play with a Peavey jsx head with 2 4x12 Marshall cabs and it sounds amazing! Great job BBE.

Comments about BBE 882i Sonic Maximizer:

According to the manuf. description, this sonic maximize is designed to be placed between the amp and loudspeaker/monitor setup. Unless I am incorrect, this unit, or any of the BBE units would not work for me due to the Speakon connectors employed on the amp and speaker systems. Any live sound setup that is up to date will have this same scenario, so where does the benefit come from if the device can't be fit into the system?

This unit works as advertised and with some adjusting provides a notable difference in the sound of the system . For what it is it seems that it could be offered at a lower price level with the tradeoff that more would be purchased .
I recommend it for larger , more powerful systems .

Great product! I am a drummer who owns the practice pa(singers in our area are broke and dont have pa). I run a Peavey CS800 amp, yamaha club monitors, SM58 mics on the vocals, and an old Yamaha 12-channel board. I don't know that much about running sound, and usually get only sound good enough to get by for practice. I wanted something EASY to use that would give us better quality sound, and the BBE 882i is IT!! Just plug in and go, and my old sounding pa sounded fantatic! The vocals are WAY better sounding now, and it seems like there is more punch in it. I am VERY pleased with this product, and would recomend it to anyone wanting an in-expensive and easy way to have a better pa.

I've had this for awhile now, it makes vocals sound a lot better than just recorded dry same with guitar amplifiers and drums! I recorded drums without it and it sounded ok but wasn't what I was looking for so I hooked up the BBE into my mixer and it makes the drums sound 10 times better. It's worth it! If you love recording or playing lots of shows and feel like theres some kind of sound missing from your rig this will fix the problem awesome product.

I just got this unit a few days ago, I upgraded from the 362 maximizer. My 362 had a lot of noise added to the great sound it produced so I decided to look into the 882i. The 2 independant channels are an upgrade and the balanced i/o is beautiful. No noise anymore. On top of that, the actual effect itself is much better too. I go through a PodXT 2.0 with my guitar and it sounds wonderful. I play bass through a Behringer Bass V-Amp Pro (pretty cheap) but it makes it sounds 100 times better! For vocals and acoustic guitar I use an AKG Perception 200 Condenser mic and it is incredible. Well worth the money for any studio (or live) musician or engineer. If you are considering getting the cheaper 362 Maximizer, save up and go with the 482i, or if you want the balanced (noise-free) lines, go with the 882i. You won't be disapointed

Comments about BBE 882i Sonic Maximizer:

I purchased this unit about 2 months ago and haven't had any issues with it. Its built well and feels extremely solid. I wouldn't say it works miracles for my tone but its almost like it helps me push my stack to the limit. I run it through a 6505 head and basson cab. I've never really experimented with this item on my clean channel though only lead channel. I pretty much view this item as a very basic eq/signal organizer that has great results. More so for the style of music I play (heavy, low tuned melodic riffs). I recommend this to every guitarist who plays some sort of hardcore, metal, or death metal. This unit helps stabilize your low end and gives your amp the capabilities of pushing that low end further then the amp alone can(great for break downs). This high end contour is also great, its extremely useful for solos and other leads. Overall this unit has helped me with my high gain applications. It helps keep everything clean, tight, and solid even at high volumes.

Four knobs! No muss, no fuss. This will do more for perking up your low budget mix than compressors or EQs, with no learning curve at all. Great for musicians who don't want to spend hours fiddling and tweaking, but just make it sound better. I find it saves my ears by cutting down on the time I spend listening to mixes.

Comments about BBE 882i Sonic Maximizer:

As my friend looked at my guitar rig he said, "That's alot of money for just one effect." Then I fired up my TSL 100. I can't say what he said after he heard it, but I he wants one now. The 482i is great but the balanced in and outs of the 882i make for a virtual silent effect. Just make sure you put the BBE as the last effect in the chain. Other effects after it can delute the effect ot the BBE. I put it right after my racked effects and it just makes the echo and chorus stand out. If you want your guitar tracks to stand out go BBE in your rack. (482i or 882i)
