I like to use active DI's with Bass Guitars. I've been using Rolls ADB2's but wasn't satisfied with the bass tone coming through the Rolls. Picked up a couple of these BBE Magnum DI's on SDOTD at a great price. First impression: these are heavy (the weight comes from the steel case, there is no transformer inside). Second impression: the bass guitars have more low end definition, more punch. Our 2 bass guitarists, who have 25 years of live performance each, noticed the improvement in bass sound immediately. I've used the Radial active DI's and like their tone, but I've found that a guitar can easily overdrive and clip the input signal when our guitarists (Taylor T3, Taylor T5 and bass guitars) really play out hard...I have not witnessed the input being clipped on the BBE Magnum DI's. Perhaps the BBE's have higher supply voltage rails for the Op-Amps then the Radials do? The signal is also very clean, no buzzing or hash.

Were BBE's marketing people Tom Selleck fans? It's funny too me that the model name of these remind me of the TV series he starred in.

I was hoping these would measure up to my Radial JDI Duplex or at least be better than my Behringer Ultra DI 100. Unfortunately that was not the case. The BBE DI sounds a bit flat and plasitcky, lacking in depth or detail. Even the Behringer sounds more musical. The BBE was tolerable, but bland on bass guitar, but when I tried it on my digital piano, it turned the sound into pure cheese, so I had to send it back. On a positive note they seem sturdy, sturdier than the Behringer boxes. In this price range I would forget about BBE and look at the similar priced Radial boxes, they are the industry standard. Or if you need to save money, the Behringer is truly a good bet, and performs quite adequately. The BBE is disappointing.

Comments about BBE Magnum DI Direct Box:

I tested this DI against my Neve DI with active and passive bass guitars... I REALLY had to listen to hear the difference between the two. There is a difference, but for any but the most critical listening situations, you'll never be able to tell...

My only gripe (and this is real nitpicking) is that the switches, when they're in the out position, they protrude a little past the metal lip of the box... It's larger than my Passive Radial DI, and is pretty heavy...

Comments about BBE Magnum DI Direct Box:

I have several DI boxes by other makers and all but one of them are passive. If you have shopped for DIs, especially active ones, you know these can be ridiculously expensive. I got this on a STotD so the price was right. Usually, it seems you're just paying for someone's "golden-ear" opinion. I guess my ears aren't quite that golden because, I think this one sounds great - clean, quiet and neutral - nothing added or taken away. It has everything you could want - pad switch, ground lift, thru put jack and active circuitry. It's built in an all metal housing that looks super road-worthy. I have several BBE pedals and rack units and for me they are an outstanding value.

      Phantom power only

Comments about BBE Magnum DI Direct Box:

First of all, it works - it's a big rugged active DI box that does the job it is designed to. On the down side, it is kind of a brick (the down side to big and rugged I guess) but the primary issue I have with it (and the reason for four stars instead of five) is that it has no battery capability and must be phantom powered to work. While rare, I still run into situations where the house PA does not provide phantom power. If you do also, you might want to consider alternatives

Comments about BBE Magnum DI Direct Box:

We use this DI in our live sound venue. This was not the first DI i tried, and only bought it because it was the SDOTD. After installing in our room I could not believe how much better they sounded than the other DI's. A musician that played here wanted to use his fancy DI. So I said yes, but could we do an A/B comparison for my own knowledge. After the test, he said he needed to get a Magnum DI and it has never been unplugged since.

Comments about BBE Magnum DI Direct Box:

Got this through a Stupid Deal. Carefully tested with a Mackie Pro FX12 mixer and Mogami cables, with Numark headphones. First a Fender Pbass. Couldn't hear the difference between a direct connection to the board and the DI connection. I tried it over and over. Then I tried an electric guitar. It was very difficult to tell the difference, but the DI output seemed a tiny bit brighter and warmer. Not bad at all.

I plan on using this if the house can handle my bass, and I don't have my bass amp, which has a DI output. Or, as is often the case, a fellow guitarist is having trouble getting volume in the pa due to a poor impedance match etc. I will probably loan it out more than use it myself, with confidence that it does sound GOOD!
