OVERVIEW

Highly sophisticated electronics and a logical design!

Housed in a compact and easy-to-use package, the BBE Max-X3 2-Way Stereo/3-Way Mono Crossover provides a variety of options for virtually all live sound-reinforcement amplifier configurations. The BBE Max-X3 promises clean, distortion-free audio with a predictable, repeatable range of control. The BBE High Definition Sound process employed by the Sonic Maximizer is world-renowned among music and sound professionals for remarkable improvements in total sound quality, bringing crystalline clarity and air to the source material as well as revealing rich harmonic subtleties. The Max-X3 employs state-variable, 4th-order Linkwitz-Riley filters. This minimizes phase inaccuracies in the critical crossover region and ensures the output at all frequencies remains in-phase, which is critical for the accurate summing of each driver in a speaker stack. This design has a very steep 24dB/octave slope, which ensures that each driver designed to reproduce a specific frequency range is not driven beyond its limits.

The BBE Process--"What it Is"

Loudspeakers have difficulty working with the electronic signals supplied by an amplifier. These difficulties cause such major phase and amplitude distortion that the sound reproduced by the speaker differs significantly from the sound produced by the original source.
In the past, these problems proved unsolvable and were thus relegated to a position of secondary importance in audio system design. However, phase and amplitude integrity is essential to accurate sound reproduction. Research shows that the information which the listener translates into the recognizable characteristics of a live performance are intimately tied into complex time and amplitude relationships between the fundamental and harmonic components of a given musical note or sound. These relationships define a sound's "sound".
When these complex relationships pass through a speaker, the proper order is lost. The higher frequencies are delayed. A lower frequency may reach the listener's ear first or perhaps simultaneously with that of a higher frequency. In some cases, the fundamental components may be so time-shifted that they reach the listener's ear ahead of some or all of the harmonic components.
This change in the phase and amplitude relationship on the harmonic and fundamental frequencies is technically called "envelope distortion." The listener perceives this loss of sound integrity in the reproduced sound as "muddy" and "smeared." In the extreme, it can become difficult to tell the difference between musical instruments, for example, an oboe and a clarinet.
BBE Sound, Inc. conducted extensive studies of numerous speaker systems over a ten year period. With this knowledge, it became possible to identify the characteristics of an ideal speaker and to distill the corrections necessary to return the fundamental and harmonic frequency structures to their correct order. While there are differences among various speaker designs in the magnitude of their correction, the overall pattern of correction needed is remarkably consistent.
The BBE Process is so unique that 42 patents have been awarded by the U.S. Patent Office.

Comments about BBE Max-X3 2-Way Stereo/3-Way Mono Crossover:

I have been using active crossovers since the late 1980's for Bi-amping, Tri-amping and Quad-amping. I have owned many crossovers and still own several crossovers besides the 2 BBE MAX-X3's. When dialed in correctly the sound is AMAZING. Very clean, detailed and dynamic. I have read many reviews about the BBE sonic maximize and was some what skeptical. This is the way the Sonic Maximizer should have always be implemented using it in an active crossover. I have 2 of these, 1 for each stereo channel. My system is powered by 2 Yamaha DSP-A1 Processor amplifiers for powering my open baffle satellite speakers consisting of 2 Audax HM130 CO Mid-woofers and a Vifa D25AG-35 1 inch Aluminum Dome Tweeters with the rear chamber cup removed. The Woofers Below the Satellites are 2 each HiVi research W-10 woofers in a ported 3.4 Cubic Foot enclosure with all 1.5 inch thick construction, Powered by the Emotiva LPA-1 amplifier below the 2 BBE MAX-3 Crossovers. My input levels on the MAX-3 are set at 5. The Output on the W10 woofers are set at 5, the Mid-woofers set at 6 and the tweeters are set at 5. After 8 weeks or so of tinkering I settled for the Sonic Maximizer setting for both the LOW and HIGH at just below the 3 setting. The Bass form the W10 woofers is tight and very well defined and blends better than ever with my 3 Sub-Woofers. The midrange and highs sound fantastic. I do not think the Sonic maximize is well benefited for use on full range speakers with internal passive crossovers. Active cossovers is the way the Sonic Maximizer should be used. My older brother is Bi-amping using 1 BBE MAX-3 and he is also amazed at the sound. My brothers system is the Emotiva UMC-200 Preamp, Emotiva XPA-5 Generation 2 amplifier, OPPO BDP-3 Blu-ray player HTD Level 3 Satellites and 2 of my DIY Woofers with 2 each Dayton 10 inch Reference Series Woofers in each enclosure. The MAX-3 is an amazing piece of equipment especially at such a low price I highly recommend it.

Comments about BBE Max-X3 2-Way Stereo/3-Way Mono Crossover:

The reason for the 4 star rating was because I had to buy 1/4 in to rca adapters which is by no means a deal breaker. just another low cost inconvenience which wasn't even a big deal to me.

Comments about BBE Max-X3 2-Way Stereo/3-Way Mono Crossover:

This BBE crossover replaced my broken TDM X 2 crossover and I couldn't be happier with it. I'm using it for front Bi amped speakers in my surround home system. Works and sounds awesome and the sonic maximizer really increases the sound quality.

Comments about BBE Max-X3 2-Way Stereo/3-Way Mono Crossover:

I have used many active crossovers in the past 25 years. RANE, TDM Design, Audio Control, Behringer, Loft, Pyle and now these BBE Max-X3. I have to say that for the money these are in incredible value. Very well made and sound every bit as good as any I have used in the past and the Sonic Maximizer is just icing on the cake.I am amazed at the Sonic Maximizer's ability to breath new life into my music, it is simply amazing. I was a bit skeptical about about these, but now all I can say is I am very impressed. I highly recommend these. I purchased 2 so I can run 3-way stereo. 1 for each channel set up mono mode. The both work perfect with a low noise and high output. The are being used with Yamaha DSP-A1 inegrated surround processor amplifier and Emotiva LPA-1 7 channel Amplifier. My Speakers are Hi Vi W10 woofers 2 per channel, Audax HM130co Mid-woofers 2 per Channel and Vifa 1 inch Dome tweeters.

Comments about BBE Max-X3 2-Way Stereo/3-Way Mono Crossover:

I am a trained and college educated sound technician, as well as a music professor and musician. I purchased 2 of these BBE's for my Music Shoppe sound company live racks, and was very happy with the sound and functionality of these units, EXCEPT for one thing. These units do not allow you to dial your crossover point all the way down, ONLY to 80 cycles. This means each time I am not using subwoofers (for venues that do not need them), I have to disconnect the XLR inputs from this BBE crossover, and come directly out of my dual 31 band EQ's to my mixer. This means I also will not have access to the very nice BBE process that is installed in this crossover. My past crossovers allowed me to dial the crossover frequency all the way down, when ever I wanted to use only upper mains on tri-pods for any smaller and quieter venues. I didn't notice this when I purchased these BBE crossovers, and it is a bit of a pain to contend with. Otherwise, they are great units. The BBE process adds a lot to the over all sonority and timing of the frequencies, and I engage this process ONLY after doing my initial sound check for each show. It adds a wonderful "wrap around" sound quality, that is similar to surround sound in some ways, and adjusts the higher and lower frequencies with more efficiency to work well together. The 4 mute buttons are also wonderful, because I can run an mp3 player when I power up, and check each sides subs and mains for signal, without having to get out of my chair. This is also a nice function that can help protect your speakers when you power up or down. I turn the BBE process buttons off at the end of each gig, and also mute all 4 of these buttons before powering down.

If you need a crossover this is the one to buy. The sonic maximizer function is worth the price alone and will clean up your mix. Our live sound is improved 100 percent with this unit, the lows are defined and the highs are clear and sharpened.

Isn't that what you want from your equipment? No complaints? This does it job. Contrary to another review, I get no discernible hum from this. He may have grounding issues, either from a faulty unit or external to it. Whether or not the Sonic Maximizer is a plus or not depends on the kind of program. You can always bypass it completely. I will say that the x10 button shouldn't be so close to a level control where it could accidentally be pressed.
