Was needing something to enhance our vocals in our group, the compressor/sonic maximizer seemed to be the way to go. But when we tried it, I had to totally reset our eq. to try and regain our mix. It enhanced alot of highs (4k and up mainly) to bring them out, using the maximizer, only puts you in a barrel with the lid partially on, which sounded really muddy.
With that said, we never got the sound that we were hoping for in our first practice with them. I am a experienced musician and know how I like my mix to sound, I guess I will just have to play with different mixes til I find one that will suit me.
I would recommend this product, just know going in you will have to put in some time to achieve the sound you are looking for!

Excellent piece of gear, combines BBE process and a quality rack compressor with a functional and easy to use noise gate. Putting all of this into one rack space is a great concept. It is an amazing addition to my bass rig, really brings out the best in my amp and instrument. Also used it as an insert to a PA channel for vocal use, and it sounded great there, too. Made it easier to vocalize clearly with less effort and better overall tone. I would replace this immediately if stolen or broken with an identical unit.

I use Mesa Boogie, Gibson Les Paul's with the Zakk Wylde EMG 81-85's with a few pedals in the chain. For nearly 6 months I have been pulling my hair out trying to work on my overall tone. My band's rehearsals were going ok but something was missing and I wasn't sure what to do.
I already had a BBE 882i Sonic Maximizer and I bought a Decimator ProRack G to help with the feedback but the tone was very much lacking.
My bassist is a great recording engineer and he made all my recorded guitar tracks sound smooth and alive. I could not figure it out.
Then he sent me a link to the BBE MaxCom Dual Channel Compressor.
Once I plugged it into my rig and I strummed the first power chord, it felt like a blanket was removed from my amplifier. I could not believe what I was hearing. I was in complete musical heaven and I smiled all the way through my bands rehearsal. I never felt happier.
It is a solid built, one unit, rack and offers so much in diversity. Compressor, Limiter, Gate and a Sonic Maximizer! All I needed was this one unit and my musical woes would have been gone months ago. Now I cannot live without it. A fantastic piece of equipment. I am thinking about getting a spare before BBE realizes what a fantastic piece of equipment they start charging more for it.

Its not a $2000 compressor, and lacks warmth, even when the input is cranked, but it does even out dynamics, and works quite well on shy vocalists. Needs a better gate too.
I love the sonic maximizer, but it does give a volume boost, unnecessarily. It is almost like you are adjusting the gain, of the treble, kind of like M/S processing (mid/side processing).

My real gripe is the compressors attack and release, I understand that the unit is supposed to be transparent, but I have used many compressors before, and when you are sitting there listening to a kick get processed, and trying to attune the attack and release for transients, you dont hear much of a difference either way you go.

Everything else, does what it is supposed to do!
The potentiemeters are a little cheap, as are the inputs/outputs
Even just for the sonic maximizer alone, cant beat that sound seperation.

This is the second BBE product I have bought and for good reason. It amazes me the way the sonic maximizer works. I don't have a consistant soundman to watch over the sound as we do praise and worship in our church. This is why it was important to get a compressor to help control the volume of our service. I was really impressed with the BBE Acoustimax, that I wanted to get the BBE Maxcom compressor. This thing works like it should, smooth transition when the compressor begins to work it doesn't kill the sound or dynamics. When the sonic maximimizer is engaged it helps to creates that seperation of each voice and instrument that we all try to create when mixing our sound. Even when I play music from an ipod through our system, it really seperates each part. I think the best way to describe what the maximizer does is to compare a regular movie to a 3D movie. It's the same picture but you don't get the depth. With the Maxcom the music doesn't just come at the crowd they become a part of it.
The only thing I didn't like is some of the knobs are really tight.

I use this for my lead vocals and back up vocals live. Mostly for the limiter... But, recently I found myself in a tough position. Playing bass on my own recordings. After having read the manual, 5 months after purchasing, I decided to set it so that I could record my bass tracks and not sound like a toolbag... HA HA HA HA!!!! It worked and I didn't have to ask a studio musician to advance me the work without money. (Bad ethics) It's still kicking and doing the job after a year, and on top of that, people always like to watch the pretty lights on stage and ask, "What does that do?" I just tell them it keeps me from blowing my speakers, LOL

like everyone has said< this thing is fantastic. the sonic maximizer is perfect. dial it in to whatever you need and it does the trick. compressor is top notch, in my book. i got rid of my dbx compressor because it doesnt come close. if you need a compressor and a sonic maximizer, look no further. just get it.

It finally set the right tone for my drums and accordion(pa-800) in live recording. I was struggling for weeks trying to get CD audio quality(48Khz/16 bit) on my recording with my band. I just tried the auto mode, will manually play with,later this week. I also own a dbx 1066(good, expensive) and art Pro VLA II(very good,twice the money), I was skeptical about the sonic maximizer(sm) feature in a compresor since I already own a 822i which I used with my pa-800 and psr-900(for live performances), there was a noticeable difference in recording with and without(sm).I'm going to get a couple more.

Let me start by saying, i absolutely hate compressors!! but i love everything BBE, and gave this one a try. First thing, i originally used the MaxCom for vocals on channel 1, and channel 2, was a "do everything Di"... basically just ran my preamps/effects 1 and 2 into this, using the gate to cut noise, using the limiter to brickwall the sound from damaging the next device, then the maximizer to bring back what all the gear/wires/ect had taken from the original source material (vocals, bass, or acoustic guitar). This is just one use of MANY this thing can do. I also used it as the last device in a jam session to protect the mains, cut noise, and add clarity. I have also used it on drum overheads with great success (i recomend getting a few of these, so you can gate each pad, compress each mic differently, then maximize if needed, for drums)Lastly, this is waht i use it for now. I had some huge issues with bass (lower) frequencies coming out of my guitar amp BEFORE the mids and highs. Research tought me that my effects processor, and amp try to "fix" low frequencies, (long story), but in the end, the MaxCom solved the issue in less then 10 minutes. I run the 4 cable method with my guitar rig (actually the 5 cable method, since its stereo), basically the MAxcom is used as the LAST device into the amps effects loop, used to gate any noize the maximizer might add (if any), then i use the limiter function to protect my AMp, then set the maximizer at about noon (both channels, both nobs) and its pretty much going to stay in my guitar rack, and i will get another one soon.Finally, this is one heck of a product, i recommend you read the PDF before buying, you won't believe how many uses this has, and i haven't even explain how i used the side-chain!

This this is great. I've used mine in my bass rig... right out of my dual outputs from my Ampeg bass preamp into the MaxCom, then into a PLX 1602 with a cab on each channel. Wicked. I've also used it in the main inserts of my mixing board for live gigs. Amazing. It does add a bit of a whiney noise when the BBE is activated. You only notice it when nothing is being played (if you leave the gate off). The added punch and definition makes up for it bigtime, and the gate can be adjusted to kill that little problem.I want a second one to dedicate to the PA rack so I can leave the other one in my bass rig.
