I recently purchased the 404HD and put it through its paces at a very large music event and found it to be a reliable and easy-to-use interface. The big difference between this interface and the more expensive equivalent devices is the software. Everything in the 404HD is hardwired, so the software does not allow you to do any unique routing of signals.

All of the output 1s on the back of the device are all output 1. The effect send 1 is not separate from the master 1 send or the aux 1 send. It's all just 1 send to multiple outputs (unlike my Focusrite interface which has true, independent outputs). This significantly reduces the functionality of the device and is likely the trade-off made for the lower cost.

However, I've been able to successfully use the 404HD as a mini, 4-channel mixer (using Ableton as the mix controller) and as a multi-channel output device for keyboard performance. The noise floor on the inputs is higher than ideal for recording but sufficiently adequate for live performance.

I can recommend this product to anyone who doesn't have a lot of money and whose performance needs aren't too much.

I use the UMC404 with Windows 10, 7 & XP for multi track recording and audio recording off the internet. The hardware is well made and the sound quality when the unit actually works is very good. The drivers however are not so good, After installation no matter which OS I'm using several reboots are required to get the drivers to "bed in". Also the Quick Start Guide is useless gives very vague setup instructions and product description. Behringer support promptly replied to my request for help but only provided info that I already knew.
I would buy the product again as now that I was able to get it to work I'm quite happy with it and it is good value compared to other similar products, and I'm not sure that other brands would be any easier to use.

Comments about Behringer U-PHORIA UMC404HD Audiophile:

So far I've used this thing a few times for practicing and recording vocals and guitar, as well as a few hardware tests.

One of the first things I had to do when I tried to record this device was to set the input levels in the computer such that they would be equal to the levels I heard when utilizing the direct monitoring. I think I set the level to about -11 on the software to get them to be the same, or you can go through the PC's sound card settings and set it to 50. I've needed to do this for other products before, it's a setting issue on your computer, not with the device. Fixing this will make it much easier to record quickly, because the levels you hear of yourself will be equal to the levels you record.

There was not a very good set of documents for this product, it had instructions that took me a while to get through. I registered the product, the site is hard to use, it bounces you up to random spots in the page if you accidentally click near instead of on any of the information entry boxes. I haven't gotten my code for Trackition for registering it yet.

The sound is great. There's plenty of in's and out's for me. I use the inserts to run 4 channels of Gate and Compressor, I'm going to be adding 2 channels of GEQ once I get the right adapters. My computer was able to run on minimum latency and it's quick enough that you could probably run a small gig in very high quality through this device with your choice of both software and hardwired gear.

I'm not sure that the "Midas preamps" are more than just buzzword (allegedly these have XL4 chips in them--same as the M32 and X32 as well as several other Midas mixers and preamps), but there are definitely high quality preamps built into this machine... I might even plug all of my vocals or drums into this, run them out of the inserts and through my outboard effects then into my mixer at a bigger gig.

Comments about Behringer U-PHORIA UMC404HD Audiophile:

As far as the unit itself...5 stars all the way. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was because of the difficulty downloading drivers. The Behringer web site recommended drivers called for "UMC Driver 3.29.0 for Windows 7 to 10". That would not load, but the fix is using the "Windows Driver V2.23.0".

After that got resolved it's been a thing of beauty!! I was using a Mackie 32/4 into an M-Audio 10-10 and this is significantly cleaner. This thing is whisper quiet and has plenty of gain in the headphone volume. I'm pretty much not using the board any more except when I need to eq the signal before going into my DAW.

I'm using Sonar X1 64 bit. It's not compatible with ASIO or MME (32bit) drivers. You need to adjust the driver setting to WDM/KS and it works like a charm.

Once you get it up and running...AWESOME!!!! And at this price...are you kidding me??? Fantastic!!!

Comments about Behringer U-PHORIA UMC404HD Audiophile:

The "free" software, Tracktion, does not work with a 64 bit computer. An upgrade of Tracktion is available that's not too pricey. No big issue, there are plenty of DAW's out there for not a lot of money or even free. Audacity is free and works very well, although very basic. If you have an older computer, 32 bit, Audacity will work fine. Samplitude works better with 64 bit puters. It is really intensive, provides great graphics and lots of sample loops, VST add-ons etc. Reaper is more basic, but very powerful and also in the low price range. A lot of gizmos and hardware devices come with free LE editions of DAW's, all are pretty basic tho. You have tons of choices, depending on your needs & budget, that will get you there.
This device is very professional looking. Doesn't look like a car battery charger like it's competitors, and has a more ergonomic layout. It's small, but every square inch is utilized.
The Midas pre-amps are amazingly quiet and clean. They are "class A" pre-amps, which most are. This is not like a GPA score, just the type circuitry, lol. Lot's of hype by mfgs. on this, as if class "A" is the best. There are some "class AB" pre-amps, but these are more expensive and no need to get into technical details. Overall, pre-amps work great.
No glicks, or glitches, smooth recording. Unit offers choice of sampling rates. 44.1Khz is OK, 96Khz xlnt. 192Khz, A bit overkill I think.
The features are amazing. 4 separate inserts in the back! Have 4 busses on Mackie 1604VLZ plugged into these. Mackie has decent pre-amps, but doesn't compare to Midas. For vocals I use one of the 4 inputs on front. These ins are multi-pin. They can handle pretty much anything. Even a switch on each to go from line to inst. Big plus. All have a volume cntrl. and a green & red clip LEDs. Headphone out with vol cntrl. Phantom pwr. 4 record outs, bal & unbal. & more. 4 channel full duplex recording. LOT of features. Great bargain if you can find one.

Comments about Behringer U-PHORIA UMC404HD Audiophile:

This unit is a real bargain. Found it extremely versatile. Read reviews that have "software routing issues". Agreed, the free software DAW that comes with this (a download) is pretty weak and only works with 32 bit computers. For live sound and live recording I use my old workhorse, a Mackie CR 1604 VLZ mixer. So routing is not a real issue. Live I use two PC's. One for recording, one for effects etc. that are routed into the recording mix. Effects I process using Samplitude and go back into the Mackie with a small Soundcraft board. The Sam DAW has more routing than necessary so much it can get complicated, lol. I use Reaper on the recording computer. Again any output can be assigned to any input. Same with the SAM. The board I guess is the key. I can do the PA, foldback monitors, 4 recording channels, outboard effects (the other PC is using 4 channel PCI soundcards). I generally use 12 mics. and 4 direct inputs live. I do agree with the software issues. As with most free software (LE versions of the good stuff) that comes with these devices, are pretty much junk. I give them away. For live recording, 4 channels retains that "live" sound. And this unit make really clean recordings. For home studio recording this unit is great. So clean dithering was used when making a glass master. the Midas preamps are not just "hype" in my opinion. Think they're great. When recording in the studio, the board is used much less. I am stepping up to more channels soon. When I bought this unit, money was more of an object.

Wow! I have been looking at these Behringer interfaces for awhile but have been nervous about purchasing one. Behringer has a bit of a sketchy history in audio equipment, some things good, others not so much. I finally decided to try one of these after many hours of scouring YouTube videos and internet reviews. I have a m audio m track plus that I was using previously, I just needed more inputs. After narrowing it down between this and a focusrite interface, I decided to try the Behringer. It sounds great! Clean preamps, plenty of clean gain. Mic/line switching, a 10db pad, you really get a lot of versatility. It integrated seamlessly with Reason 7 and it just sounds good. I would highly recommend! I may need to sell this one and invest in the 8 input version!

I have used DAW interfaces for years. Some difficult to use and others that don't really function as advertised. I just downloaded the drivers and installed them. I then installed the T7 and did a bit of studying, which btw is an important factor when using a computer based recording application. Within a few hours I had laid down two tracks and I was able to install a drum kit. And I feel like I totally understand how to use my U-Phoria.. UMC

Not a bad unit once you work out all the software issues. It was pooping during playback until I redid the firmware update. It said in the UMC audio control panel it had the new firmware but I decided to install it again and that took care of the problem. Now it seems to be working fine. They are so mass-produced that it's hard to tell if will last or not but we will see. It has always been hit or miss with Behringer stuff.

My research came on using with Cubase Elements, getting 4 trks at once. Just had to add Busses in the set-up, worked great gave me lots of options

Comments about Behringer U-PHORIA UMC404HD Audiophile:

This little unit fit my situation perfectly! I used to have an audio interface with only two inputs (one 1/4", one XLR), no outputs, and questionable MIDI in/out...recording was a really tedious process. The UMC404HD is a solid little unit, fitting perfectly underneath my iMac so it takes up hardly any space on my desk. I'm using the main outs, the headphones, the MIDI in, and 1-2 of the inputs at any given time, and everything just seems to work flawlessly. When I got it, I didn't have to fiddle around with drivers or anything like that, as I did with my previous interface. It just works! Now, I can't say my gear is getting in my way...if I'm not writing/recording, it's my own fault.

I had to replace my Delta 44 audio card recently and chose the UMC404HD. The sound quality is excellent and installation / setup were a breeze. My studio is full of Behringer gear because the performance/price ratio is always higher than any other brand.
