I've done shootouts with this against the CountryMan type 85 and the Radial J48. Head to head. The Countryman has slightly better bass response, and a slightly more open high end, but VERY similiar in tone. On a passive P-bass the difference was almost unnoticeable. On an active bass with EMGs, the difference was noticable, but not dramatic. Compared to the Radial, They were almost the same. I could hear little difference with the active instrument, and none with the passive. The Radial is built MUCH better in terms of build quality, but sounds almost identical.I've had two of these for 3 or 4 years, and both are still working very well. They are in low traffic studios and do irregular duty on live gigs. The only complaint I've got with them is the battery compartment isn't the best designed, it's a little too small for the clip, and the door cover would be easy to lose if you lost track of it. That said, if you are careful with the unit, you should have no issues with the compartment.

A direct box is one of those pieces of gear you should have to rarely replace. There isn't a whole lot to them electronically to go wrong other than cheap switches and bad contacts. I work as a live sound engineer for a local city in a couple of facilities in addition to doing freelance studio recording and I have lost all confidence in this product. We have 4 of these boxes and one stereo radial direct box and just recently I did a sound setup with 2 keyboards, and 2 drum triggers. I had to use 2 of these for the triggers and neither one worked. I switched the boxes around so the radial was on the triggers and it worked perfect. These direct boxes tend to be incredibly picky of the cable you use to feed it. If it does actually work you have a 50/50 chance of it sounding distorted. Invest a little bit more money and get a direct box you can count on for the rest of your career. Buy Radial.

Comments about Behringer ULTRA-DI DI100 Direct Box:

This DI Box is great. I've used them at my church for years, and they're still very reliable. I've used them for my acoustic, the church's electric drum kit, bass guitar, and even running out of an amp. They are very versatile and affordable!

Had trouble with a passive DI getting enough bass signal to FOH. Bought this and the thump was back. Do not need the battery with phantom power.

        very reliable

Comments about Behringer ULTRA-DI DI100 Direct Box:

I bought two of these SEVEN years ago. I'm still using the first, the second is the spare. The only dislike I have for this DI is the battery compartment, which is ridiculous and useless. I use Phantom power anyway. I have a Fishman Powerbridge on my Gibson RD77. A stereo out-jack separates the 'acoustic' signal, which goes straight to the Behringer DI. The Signal is clean, and powerful, and every sound tech I've worked with is amazed at this 'cheapie' DI. I love it and use it every gig...

        Broke after light use

Great features and price, but using it every now and then at church, it broke within 3 years--it distorts whether on phantom or battery power.

        Great DI for the money!

Comments about Behringer ULTRA-DI DI100 Direct Box:

The Behringer Ultra ? DI 100 is hard to beat for the money. The professional multi-purpose features are great! And yes it does have gold plated XLR and ? connectors. I play 5 string bass, and no problems on the low B or in the 7th position with runs and licks up into the cutout. Soundmen are just awed at it performance. It?s as rugged as the high dollar units. Actual these DI?s have lasted longer for me since the high-end units seem to grow legs and walk away. The high-end units don?t have anything over this unit. I still have my 1st Ultra DI 100 in service and it was purchased in 04/2006. Just bought the 2nd one a year ago to make switching rigs at gigs easier.

        Very Good Product

        By Kevin-6xAJx

Comments about Behringer ULTRA-DI DI100 Direct Box:

I work for the audio department at the University of Wisconsin - River Falls. We own 10 of these DI's and use them HEAVILY (2-4) times per week - year round. I've read some complaints about failure, but in four years, we haven't had a single problem with any of them. One of our reps actually hooked all the DI's he sells to a scope and the Behringer beat out many of the higher priced Whirlwinds and Radials in terms of frequency accuracy (I know that doesn't necessarily translate to fidelity). Now, if your doing a priceless recording and need pristine audio quality, then I'd go with something in a higher price range. But if your doing live work, you really can't beat this DI.

        Once You Get Going Good

Comments about Behringer ULTRA-DI DI100 Direct Box:

I was in the pit of a local musicial just this last week. Nearly everybody else had there own derrect box but me so I was given this one to use. I'm not real experienced with derrect boxes, but overall it worked really well, I had never heard my bass sound so good (though I think that was mainly the soundboard, speakers, ect.).It is built with a pretty solid body that wouldn't be real easy to brake. The only trouble we had with it was changing the battery, we couldn't get the old one out.

Comments about Behringer ULTRA-DI DI100 Direct Box:

This box does everything I need it do, and for a very fair price. Now I'm not sure what the other guy was thinking, but no this isn't gonna give you a great ampeg bass tone going right through a PA. However, it is still a great tool to have for recording flat bass/guitar signals without any bleed, and letting you tamper/reamp the signal later. Also the -20dB pads work great in many situations and the ground lift is a handy option to have as well. All in all its only 40 bucks, so get yourself a few of these and guaranteed, they will help you in a pinch.

Comments about Behringer ULTRA-DI DI100 Direct Box:

I had a few of these over the last two years. when they work, they sound good. I've had good luck for the most part with them other than longevity. the longest one worked for nine months. For what you pay, I don't know how much more you can expect, but if this is the one you want, keep one or two for a spare.
