Pros: Tube preamp, parametric equalizer, low price.Cons: The tube is extremely difficult to change (it requires 50% disassembly of the unit).Comments: After searching for months, I discovered and purchased this preamp to be used with a home audio system. If you know your audio, tube equipment of any kind is priced in the stratosphere but this is one of the audio bargains of our time.As for changing the tube, the inexperienced will not be able to accomplish the task. Behringer should have anticipated that some tube rolling would be done and made it easier to do so (it's amazing they're able to assemble the unit like this to begin with). In the future (I'm talking to you behringer), please put the tube where it can easily be changed. The three LED's don't serve any useful purpose and nobody's going to sit there staring at the tube (yeah, I disconnected them).Note to tube rollers: Before changing the tube, build yourself a socket extender (about 7" should do)and remount the tube under the top case for easy future access. If you're handy fabricating metal, a hole in the top case with a mesh screen to let the heat out (it's not very much) would be an excellent upgrade.

I received 2 of these DOA with clear manufacturer defects resulting in a very large difference in gain and sound quality between the two channels. Channel 1 actually sounded exactly like it should, loud, crisp, and no hum, but channel 2 did just the opposite, there was a very noticeable high pitch hum, and the gain/level volume for the mic had to be turned up all the way just to hear anything at all. I tested both channels with various combinations of xlr cables and mics and the result was always the same. Even worse, the replacement was defective in both channels.I am sure if I had actually received an Ultragrain Pro that wasn't defective that I would have been happy with it, but unfortunately, after testing out 2 of these I had to give it up and just request a refund. Ended up just getting an Edirol M-16dx, which for some reason they don't sell here.

Comments about Behringer Ultragain Pro MIC2200:

Excellent unit for the money, Yeah I know if you spend a ton of money more you can get an art pre (I own one) but for a hundred bucks this unit is woth every penny. Some people claim the 12ax7 tube is just there for show-Thats garbage-they are expecting a fair low priced unit to react like a 5 or 6 hundred dollar one. I use this as one channel for my main microphone and the other channel for my bass and it works perfectly. Forget the people who say behringer stuff is junk, if your on a budget and need to get the best quality for the least money, go with this. I use this in a home apartment studio environment and itd just fine

Comments about Behringer Ultragain Pro MIC2200:

This preamp is amazing at its pricepoint. It has all standard features like phanton power, phase correction, and a separate output control, but the variable high pass filter was the deal maker for me. Having a hpf that can go all the way up to 320 makes the preamp useful for many more different sources, like wind instruments, drum overheads, and other percussion instruments. The parametric equalizer is also particularly useful when I need to tame the high-end of cheap SDC mics. I wouldn't really use it for anything but cutting high end though. As for the tone of this thing, I can't really say it's better or worse than some higher end pres I've heard. IMO, preamps don't do enough for the sound to justify spending hundreds or thousands on them unless you've already gotten the best sounding mics and acoustic treatment you can get. This preamp does what it's supposed to do just fine. It is a little bit noisy when I have to crank up the output a bit when using dynamics but I really can't complain for what I paid for it. This is too good of a value.
Oh and the LEDs behind the tube really bug me. I'll take them out when I decide to change out the stock Bugera tube. Btw, I don't think the 30v or so going to the tube is really doing much for the sound either but oh well.

Comments about Behringer Ultragain Pro MIC2200:

The Tube Change is a horribly difficult task but you will want to go with a lower gain Tube such as the Black Sable 5751 or the 12AT7 by JAN Philips. After the tube change there isn't a high end Mic Tube PreAmp that will surpass this unit. EXCELLENT!

Adds the

By Mr_Nuke

Comments about Behringer Ultragain Pro MIC2200:

For years I just couldn't get the electric guitars and keyboards to produce that warmth that their acoustic counterparts have. I knew that a tube amp could solve the problems, but I needed a small rack-mountable soulution for the studio. After some research I've found the MIC2200. The difference it makes is very subtle, but when several instruments are mixed together, each one has its own depth, and is easier to distinguish than without the MIC2200. The true value of this device is felt when you use the parametric equalizer to capture and amplify a specific range of harmonics. This can warm the tone or make it more aggressive. When used live, the instruments do not blend, but rather each one has its own presence. It gives the classic tube warmth even to digital effects processors. On the technical side, there are only two, easy to overcome, drawbacks. First, there is no control over how much gain the tube produces; it simply warms the signal, but cannot distort it. Second, the mic gain knob only works whith the XLR mic input, not the line in, but this hasn't posed any problems for me. As a plus due to the 0.03 octave range setting, the parametric EQ can easily be used to cut the feedback frequency of a microphone without affecting the tone.Overall, this is a great product, and the cheapest and most versatile alternative to a tube sound. I am looking forward to getting more of these, one for each instrument and use it with stereo processors.

Can't do better for the money!

Comments about Behringer Ultragain Pro MIC2200:

I bought 2 of these for use in my studio after they were recommended by a friend who understood my budget restraints. I am thrilled at his suggestion as they have performed reliably and as advertised for their 2 year life thus far. I did not have any undue added noise issues with either unit and have used them with a variety of condenser microphones that the preamp makes sound like they are of higher quality than they actually are. I recommend these to friends all of the time, and they are still friends!

Comments about Behringer Ultragain Pro MIC2200:

30 years plus as musician, recording artist. The Behringer Ultragain Pro MIC2200 ranks with the best. I compared it with an Avalon VT-737SP Pure Class A Mono Vacuum Tube Channel Strip (two thousand +). I couldn't really notice a difference in sound quality except the Avalon cost twenty three thousand more. I use high end microphones to record acoustic guitars, drums, and percussion and the Behringer Ultragain Pro MIC2200 kept my recordings pristine and full of tone. Don't get TRUMPED by the scary high prices of the botique mic preamps out there.

Comments about Behringer Ultragain Pro MIC2200:

If you're looking for the best mic-pre on a tight budget, you WILL NOT find a better product. The sound boost and warmth the unit provides, is outstanding. It is clear and "hiss free." I use it in conjunction with the Behringer Autocom Pro, and the dbx 215 EQ.The Ultragain, along with the other two units, sound awesome. I record using the Korg D1600V. The tracks are clear,"punchy," and very upfront. This unit is a must for hard-disc recording studio!!!

has held up for the long haul

By Michael Sharp

Comments about Behringer Ultragain Pro MIC2200:

This pre-amp has turned out to have exceeded my expectations and has paid for itself many times over. I've primarily used it in location recording 2 track situations where a console would not be required. It has held up for over 6 years now, and while not particularly magical, it does what it's supposed to do without fail. I have no idea how the single tube is integrated into the signal path. The tube appears to be backlit with an LED... But I still recommend this one, and this is coming from someone who has paid his bills with audio for 30 years. Don't take your UA-610s out of their climate controled environment for a 100 dollar gig. Get one of these instead. (You won't cry if your van gets broken into.)

King of budget preamps

  • Very flexible for very low price
  • Very useful Parametric EQ & tweakable lo-cut

Cons

  • Hard to swap tubes, complete disassembly required
  • Requires lots of knowledge to get good sound
  • Very noisy at 42+dB gain

Best Uses

  • Ghetto Analog Mastering
  • Home Studio
  • Professional Recording

Comments about Behringer Ultragain Pro MIC2200:

The unit has lots of useful features in a single package, which is golden for budget project studios.
Not only does it amplify the microphone signal, it also lets you shape the tone exactly the way you want. For example, you can easily remove that nasty 2.4kHz peak by notching it out very carefully with very high Q.
Or you can remove the excess bass on your dynamic microphone and open its sound by adding +5db around 7khz with a wide Q of 2 or so. Due to variable Q, this will sound smooth and just the way you want it.
By setting the lo cut frequency the way you want it, you can eliminate even insane proximity effect.
The majority of more costly options don't come close to the flexibility of this unit.
--------------
There is a hack one could use while operating this unit.
The MIC GAIN knob controls the first stage of amplification, which is done by a transistor
The OUTPUT knob controls the amount of the last stage of amplification, done by a TUBE.
The colder sound you need, the higher should be the MIC GAIN and lower the OUTPUT
If you're after tubey sound (it could sound muddy, cuz the tube is starver-plate), lower the MIC GAIN and compensate for that by raising OUTPUT. But be prepared for some serious HISS (luckily, i have an expander/gate in the signal chain)
TO SUM UP, it's a great device, and it's possible to get mind-blowing sound out of it. However, due to the number of professional features that need understanding, it's very easy to F the signal up if you're a noob.
P.S I advice to use it with Behringer MDX2600, which is great for limiting the levels, de-essing, compression and of course, it can expand/gate the background noise and the hiss, if the gain is set crazy high.

Comments about Behringer Ultragain Pro MIC2200:

I bought this preamp as a temporary solution for vocals until my Art Pro Channel get repaired. It is simple to use, but the noise to signal ratio is horrible. When I paused while recording vocal noise level in Pro Tools meter bridge on the track was higher than normal. I couldn't hear it in my recordings, but I don't like any form of noise whether hums, click, or pops. I had to do so much editing on my vocal track that it was ridiculous. Need less to say I haven't recorded anything else since. I plan to get a vocal processor by TC Helicon that has built in mic pre with phantom power. I will use it instead.

I can't believe I bought the Behringer MIC2200 over a year ago and it is still working perfectly. I would have paid twice this price for just the parametric EQs. But they threw in an excellent tube mic/line pre amp. The sound is second to none and believe me I have heard most of them in my 28+ years of recording and live sessions. You can't go wrong with this unit!!!

Comments about Behringer Ultragain Pro MIC2200:

What they don't tell you: This really isn't a "tube" pre-amp. The mic signal is amplified by transitors. The tube could be used as a buffer stage, but there is only ONE of them. I have no idea what that is about. What is really bad on this unit is that the input/output gain controls are detented - NOT IN THE MANUAL. Both controls jump about 3dB per click. Don't plan on matching mic levels between the two channels with this thing unless they are 3dB different. Other than those complaints. Good price, great sound, perfect reliability. I've had mine for 3 years and it's solid.

    Good product, but misleading

    By mike

    from No. AL

Comments about Behringer Ultragain Pro MIC2200:

Features: nice, great to have the independent eq's, switchable 48v, but no a/b switch. pots are detented, but vary in feel from one to the other-- needs a 1/4 input for mic/instrument level (selecting mic disables the 1/4 jack). Lose the backlit tube window...it's actually embarassing, like fisher price makes pre's....and hey...it's a 2-channel...where's the other tube?quality: controls don't feel as sturdy as past products. on the 'net, seems that one of every 8 reviews knocks quality-- I'm running signal through it for a few day's burn-in... still not bad, just not what I'd expect from them. Metering is not as "crisp", the lamps seem to fade in, rather than the crisp certainty of a good quality display.value: it is clean, and my eq is not noisy, contrary to older reviews. maybe they revised the design? if you audition it, there is a slightly more "excited" sound (yea!) that hints at the tube doing at least something, but it's very subtle, and not adjustable. least expensive rackable tube pre from a reputable mfr that i could find.overall- I like behringer-- bought this largely based on past experiences with them. but, if this product suggests a new trend for them, I'll look elsewhere. It's not a bad product, but I buy for quality, and pay for solid basic features--- looks like they went for feature-rich while sacrificing the basics... still, it's got a clean signal...

Comments about Behringer Ultragain Pro MIC2200:

This pre has an awesome sound for the dollar and I thoroughly enjoyed using it for the few weeks it lasted, but it is not reliable. I had mine less than 4 months when the left channel went out. A friend of mine has one that lasted about six months before the right channel went out on his. He just junked it and went with an ART unit.Behringer ran me through a dozen hoops before finally saying that it would take several weeks to get it repaired because of "backlogs". Then the tech said, "it's just a condition of that product and you should look into the higher end 1953 anyway."It's eleven months later and they still haven't sent me the documents needed to ship the unit to them for repairs.

I use this in my rack to bring my DI level to optimum to drive a power amp on stage and send the signal to the house as well. Wide range of gain control makes this unit perfect for this application. Extremely quiet with additional professional usable features. As for the tube, their is absolutely no reason to be attempting to change the tube. If it fails (highly unlikely as it's used in this unit) the unit has a three year warranty. If it fails after 3 years, you got your investmensts worth of use out of it. Discard it and replace it with the new model.
