OVERVIEW

A portable battery powered 5-channel mixer with 3-band EQ, FX, and monitors sends.

The compact Behringer XENYX 1002B 5-Channel Mixer has Behringer's highly musical 3-band British-style EQ, plus an FX and monitor send for each channel, making it a must-have for any audio toolkit.

State-of-the-Art Goes Portable
Whether you plug it into the wall or power it via 9V batteries, the Behringer XENYX 1002B comes equipped with many of the features you've come to expect from Behringer's larger mixers. For example, XENYX mic preamps for amazing sound quality, phantom power for use with professional-grade condenser mics, 2-Track inputs and outputs, and 60mm faders. The 4 stereo channels accept left/right or mono 1/4" TRS/TR inputs, and 3 of them also accommodate microphones (with separate Trim controls).

The Behringer XENYX 1002B represents a significant milestone in the development of mixer technology. Equipped with Behringer's premium XENYX mic preamps, this compact mixer can easily hold its own against the most expensive stand-alone mic preamps, both in terms of sound quality and available headroom. XENYX preamps offer a staggering 130 dB of dynamic range, with a bandwidth that extends from below 10 Hz to well above 200 kHz. XENYX mic pres provide such transparent, crystal-clear performance you just might think someone upgraded your mics.

Sublimely musical British EQ
The British consoles of the 1960s and '70s changed the sound of rock and roll-without them the British Invasion might not have happened. Those legendary mixing desks soon became the envy of engineers and producers all over the world. The 3-band EQ on the Behringer XENYX 1002B mixer is based on that very same circuitry, allowing you to imbue signals with incredible warmth and detailed musical character. Even when applied generously, these equalizers exhibit sweet forgiveness and superb audio quality.

Applications and value
Don't let the small footprint fool you-the Behringer XENYX 1002B is built to the same exacting standards as Behringer's larger format XENYX mixers and is housed in an equally rugged steel chassis. It is the ideal choice for keyboardists who need to mix down multiple instruments or sound modules for live or recording applications. Singers who perform with backing tracks, as well as instrumentalist/singers (acoustic guitar or piano bar, for example) find the Behringer XENYX 1002B indispensable for patching into house systems.

Field Operation
Its compact size and flexible input scheme also make it the natural choice of sports announcers for calling play-by-play game action. Likewise, radio and TV reporters especially like the Behringer XENYX 1002B mixer for its ease-of-use, remarkable fidelity and rugged reliability. And the 9 V battery option allows newscasters and correspondents to use the 1002B in remote locations where power is hard to come by. (Two 9 V alkaline batteries are required for normal operation, three for phantom power).

From its state-of-the-art XENYX mic preamps to its highly musical British-style EQ and user-friendly layout, the Behringer XENYX 1002B mixer is a solid leader for value and sonic integrity in its class.

I bought the 1002B mainly because my 1202 was generating too much noise. Once I got the 1002B, and set it up in my home recording studio, I found it to be not only quieter but more convenient to use, with more controls over the sound. The mic preamps offer more gain with less noise and better control of the low, mid and high frequencies. The dedicated monitor circuits give me more flexibility and control over hearing what I'm sending to the recorder, and over playback from the recorder as I record new tracks.
The Behringer Xenyx 1002B offers several improvements over my 1202. It is slightly larger than the 1202 but not cumbersome, and offers better control and monitoring of outgoing and incoming signals. It is much quieter. I use it as an interface with my computer recording software. It has everything I need, and more.
Not only does it deliver a clean signal to my recording software, everything about it indicates it is built to last. It is sturdy. Knobs and sliders are durable. It feels and handles like professional equipment.
I researched thoroughly before buying a replacement for my 1202. I found bigger units for a lot more money, but none that would do the job better than the 1002B. This is a lot of mixer for the money.

Let me start off by saying that I really want to like Behringer's products. I used to always use Behringer products whenever possible because of their seemingly great value. Well not anymore. I have actually purchased two of these mixers on two completely separate occasions and they have both failed.

The first one I purchased to use for a non-traditional DJ system. It accepted several stereo inputs for my computer, which ran the music software, as well as a number of XLR inputs for several microphones and having the capability to use the system for live events as well which was just what I wanted. It also came with rack ears to mount into my desktop case. I had the computer connected to the RCA channel and a wireless mic connected to the first XLR channel. *Note: I was not "mixing" in the DJ sense, it was basically a stereo interface between iTunes and my amp, no violently slamming sliders back and forth. Literally just set the volume once and then do everything through the computer; like a giant iPod dock essentially.

One day, I had to move the wireless to ch. 2 and noticed that it had a substantially worse sound quality than ch. 1 did, even though it was dialed in identically. I tried ch. 3 and noticed yet another different sound, even though it was, again, EQ'd exactly the same as the first two. The same thing happened with the stereo channels as well!

The second mixer was used in a small installation for BGM with a pair of GX3's. This one failed after only about 3 light uses over a year. It ended up taking out one of the amps and all its speakers. The main outputs no longer work properly and I currently have to ghetto-rig it through the various aux sends and monitor lines to feed the amplifiers, so none of the sliders control the levels anymore and it's super irritating.

I thought I had maybe gotten a dud with the first one, but after the second one quickly died and was purchased years later, I will not buy these ever again.

Comments about Behringer XENYX 1002B 5-Channel Compact Mixer:

I had the old model of this mixers. It died after 10-12 years. I saved the rack ears from that mixer and they fit on this one too. And the mixer actually comes with the rack ears. It doesn't say that in the packaging or description, but it does. In saving the old rack ears, which are silver, I can easily write on them to describe each channel. I use black marker. The new ears are black and are not as handy because of that. SAD!!! A great value. I highly recommend this product.

I mixed my drums with the sound I wanted to get out of them ,then exported them to 1 channel on the PA. Not using these extra channels freed up more inputs. Not to mention, now one channel controls the output of what I give it. A very nice unit-easy to operate and set up.

Def liking this mixer, I wish they were all kinda like this in terms of layout. No built in fx!!who uses these anyway?
I use it as my main mixer for recording a three piece grunge band. The only improvement would be slightly stiffer faders, and a mid sweep on the eq.

I found this a very versatile and useful piece of equipment. I use it as a pre amp for my acoustic instruments, as a vocal mixer and vocal mic pre amp and as a small portable mixing board for duets and trios. I also us it to turn my small 4 channel PA into a 8 channel when necessary. Its powerful for its size, light weight and portable. Fits easily in a small gear bag or my instrument bag. Use it with guitars, keyboards and my electric Idiopans. Love it!

Comments about Behringer XENYX 1002B 5-Channel Compact Mixer:

We call it "The Baby Mixer". We normally use a Mackie Design 16 channel mixer and 4 altec stacks for our big PA plus floor monitors. We needed a smaller and highly portable PA for a series of smaller gigs we are doing. At the core of that new smaller PA is the 1002B.

Essentially, for these small venues, everybody goes through the board/mains/monitors and does not have to bring their amps. We plug in 2 mics, line outs from my MicroCube, electronic drums, and a bass "pod" plus a stereo line from an iPod. With creative cabling you could do more. We drive the smaller amps/mains/monitors no problem.

Very adequate. Nobody has a complaint about the instrument sounds being whacked by the mixer. Having said that, you can record practice tracks, but I'd go digital if high end audio recording is your goal.

I'll also say that the battery compartment requires a screw driver to access. But in honesty, we never use it anyway.

For the money, this is a great product - emphasis on price point.
