I owned an earlier version of this for many years. I initially bought it to enchance my old 4-track cassette recorder, and it made a WORLD of difference. For one thing, I could use condenser microphones - the built-in phantom power alone was worth the price. But I also noticed that it was pushing an audibly better signal onto the tape. I gave it to a friend who was putting together a studio, and instantly missed it.

This time around I'm using the newer model, not only in the studio but also for a mini-PA mixer for coffehouse gigs. I bought a small powered monitor, and run this into it. I can use my good condenser microphone, and carry my PA in one hand - with the mixer in the gig bag!

It's got TONS of connectivity. The engineers have thought of everything. Just about anything you can think of, you can find a way to do. This little gadget is a real problem solver.
All of the most-used basic features of a much bigger mixer. A jewel in the studio, and it also can be a mixer for a mini-PA!
It appears to be as well-made as it is well-thought-out.
It's a great little multi-tool to have around, for less money than a heavy-duty mic stand.

The compact size of this mixer is great for the home studio artist. However the model lacks some needed features. There isn't a power switch... that's right, NO POWER SWITCH!! Leaving it hooked up is not an option since you cannot EVER turn it off without unplugging it. The unit is also missing a Phantom Power on/off switch, leaving the XLR port hot 100% of the time needless to say this is NOT a good idea.

My final problem with the 502 is the unit I recieved is that it had unfinished edges on the molded plastic, leaving them razor sharp! I had to rub these areas flat with another piece of plastic to make it safe to handle. Because of the unfinished edges and some other defects, the plastic end caps do not seat flush to the metal frame and looks really bad.

In spite of all the above, it does perform as it should and does provide a budget solution.

However, I feel this piece of equipment is poorly designed and constructed and I wish I had bought something different - I will be replacing this one soon with a model that has a power switch, phantom switch, and better constructed.

Comments about Behringer Xenyx 502 Mixer:

I bought 3 of these guys to use as monitor mixers for my studio. They work for my application, but there too much noise present to use for any recording, also it seems to cut all of the really high and really low frequencies. Just terrible quality sound through it. Buy a mackie or alesis if you are going to record through it.

Comments about Behringer Xenyx 502 Mixer:

The power connector is flimsy - just a little jiggle and the unit loses power. So don't expect this unit to stand up to any kind of rough treatment. But for a stable installation, it does the job very well.

Comments about Behringer Xenyx 502 Mixer:

Do not be fooled by the size or the price, this is a full function 4 channel mixer. Its compact size makes it portable and grfeat for small venues. We are using the the Xenyx 502 as part of a portable PA System which can be set up quickly for company meetings held in different parts of a large office.

As with all Behringer products (I also use an Ultrabass amp) they are rugged, built to last and quite economical.

Comments about Behringer Xenyx 502 Mixer:

I've owned another small Behringer mixer (Eurorack UB802) for quite some time, which influenced my purchasing decision. I've used that one in demanding professional applications for years and it has performed flawlessly! I have also been extremely impressed with it's mic preamps, which sounds every bit as good as my high-end dedicated mic pre-amps and full size digital mixing consols. The mic-pre on the Xenyx 502 is presumably as good, except that it seems to not have a switch for phantom power, which could be a significant limitation for a lot of buyers as it elimates the use of most condenser microphones. However, I purchased the Xenyx 502 as a birthday present for my wife, an excellent bassist, to allow her to practice her electric bass along to CDs and tapes using headphones (CD/tape machine plugs into the "2 track input"). For that purpose it has the right features, performs very well, with good sound quality, and she is thrilled with it. She is not a tech-head type, but found it relatively easy to use, although I did help her get it set up.

I use this mixer at home to practice along with an iPod either to headphones or to my Mackie monitors. One day the left channel cut out. After extensive troubleshooting I determined the left RCA input quit. Since I didn't register the product online, I am out of the 90 day warranty. You get what you pay for, I guess...

Comments about Behringer Xenyx 502 Mixer:

For a little unit I'm digging it, I originally bought it for some dj applications, but have gotten more use from it for simple home recording of ideas. Mic input works well and has enabled me to record some banjo tracks to my pc. I have used it with my bass as well to practice, but have pretty lame headphones so can't make a good judgment on it in this capacity, but seemed to work fine, was using a di box to tweak the tone before the mixer. With the rca input output lends itself to good practice tool and I have used it to interface my old turntable to my pc via a Behringer U-control usb interface. For no more than I paid for the two items I'm pretty happy. Would like a power switch though, thing can get rather warm left on.

Comments about Behringer Xenyx 502 Mixer:

We use this as a personal monitor mixer for the keyboardist. We send a mono band mix to Ch.1 line-in and the keyboardist can adjust 2 stereo or 4 mono keyboards into the monitor mix. The main-out goes to a powered speaker (SRM-150) for the option of monitoring without headphones. So far, it works great. I have concerns about Behringer in general, given so many widespread comments about quality/fail issues, but I haven't experienced any problems myself and for under $50 I'll take my chances.I took away a star on features and quality because there is no power switch, so it needs to be powered on/off from the power strip or by unplugging it. Also, the power indicator LED is too bright...I mean blinding to the point you can't even look directly at the master section...it's like having a laser pointed into you eyeball, so I had to cover it with tape.

Comments about Behringer Xenyx 502 Mixer:

i have two little kids and full time employment, so the only time i have to really rock out is after the kids go to bed. I've needed a good silent practice solution for a guitar and bass. I've tried all kinds of processors, pocket amps, and amps with headphone and aux jacks. I finally decided to try a small mixer, and this thing was the way to go.

I run either a bass direct, or a guitar amp direct out into the mixer, with a laptop running audio into the mixer, and running out into headphones. But you need a good set of headphones to really sound good. otherwise, my cheap set sounds meh, but that's a headphone issue, not the mixer.

The preamp is nice. I can run my bass directly it and it sounds pretty good. If i run it into a tube pre first, then into the board, it sounds even better. i can then set up a good mix between the bass and computer audio to play along with, and it's a perfect balance.

As far as guitar, i mesa mark 5:25 that has a direct out with cab simulator on it. I run that into the board with the computer audio just like with the bass. I can melt my face as much as i want and nobody else in the house will hear it at 1am.

This was the perfect silent practice solution for me. I haven't tried recording with it yet, and i don't really intend to unless i'd have to mic a drum set and run it into my interface.

My only con to this is the power cable. It has a proprietary jack. if it dies, you'd have to get a manufacturer replacement, however long that would take or expensive that would be. I'd prefer something more universal, but for the price, i can't argue.

Purchased to run a dynamic Mic into an amplifier, but found it useful to mix and balance guitar, vocals and accompaniment software. I run the entire mix through a guitar amp's cd input or headphones if I need to keep the noise down. Balancing the mix has been very useful during practice sessions. Many instructional audio demos separate backing tracks and solos on the stereo channels. Mixer pan controls let me quickly mute/soften the part I am practicing.

I can envision this small mixer being all I need for a portable one man show setup. Connect a powered speaker and you have all the sound control you need.
