Comments about Blue Cactus Tube Microphone:
Like I said before, you have to choose the right mic for the right job. I find this mic perfect for singers who have a raspy voice or songs that don't call for a very bright sound, and also great for screamers. Also great for extremely loud guitar amps and upright bass.
Variable polar patterns is a must with a high end tube condenser mic. I like the smooth glide of the selector knob and the fact that these functions are on the power supply not the mic. One feature that is missing, and it blows my mind, is a ground lift switch!!! I was forced to buy a whirlwind isolation transformer to run this mic in my booth with no hum. My buddy's RODE NTK or K-2 has a ground lift switch on the power supply and it was a fifth the price!! But, my cactus definitely sounds better. Other good features: good sturdy lockable case, interesting but effective shock mount. Some not so important negative features other than what I already mentioned: Power supply is extremely cumbersome and the power cable is only 2 feet long which is burdensome when trying to use it for a room mic during tracking drums
BLUE makes excellent microphones, every aspect of this microphone is well built. As for the sound, it is a tube mic and sounds just that. Keep in mind, this is not a perfect microphone, it will not sound good on everybody's voice, in every style of music, or with every preamp. But, with a little experimentation in your setup, it CAN be the perfect mic for a certain situation. For vocals, I usually run it through a Grace Design m101 preamp and occasionally a dbx 160a compressor(depending on the singer). Another favorite application is turning it to bi-directional pattern, and along with a Shure sm81, stereo miking using the M/S technique.
It's a bit pricey, and honestly, the only reason I chose this Tube microphone over the many other options out there is because, at that time, BLUE was giving away a Robbie PreAmp with purchase.

Unbelievable Mic!! In a shoot out between a U67 , MA-200 this mic shined above...Not at all dark as the other comments suggested, U67 is dark!, this this one was perfect, lows I could feel in my chest, highs were subtle not sibilant. smooth as butter, well worth every penny.. lets just say the MA-200 didn't even touch this mic and was like a cold shrill with sibilance on the highs with too much bite overall...Cactus is the Best Mic for the money next to a Lawson!! Get this Mic for Vox or Acoustic guitar and Guitar Cabs+++
Comments about Blue Cactus Tube Microphone:
I like weird mics and stray away from the ones everybody else uses. This is why I love the Cactus. I run it thru a Martech mic pre->UAD 1176-->LA2A-->DAW. The sound is huge, wide and very warm. I've never EQ'd it at ALL. The vocal pops right in front of the mix- full range- very detailed, smooth and musical. I tends to be a LITTLE on the dark side but thats it charm. I dont know why more people dont use this mic.
Comments about Blue Cactus Tube Microphone:
After reading some not so great reviews on this mic, I thought I'd share my favorable experience. This is a high end mic. The quality is top notch. It is a great vocal mic. It has a tight low end and a very smooth top end (it doesn't have the shrill high end that many of the cheap Chinese knock offs have). Of coarse you'd want to use a high-end mic pre to get the most out of this mic.
Comments about Blue Cactus Tube Microphone:
This microphone has a very limited use. If you are recording something harsh that needs taming, this mic might work for you. Otherwise, you will find it too dark on most vocals/instruments. Definitely a mic for very specific recording needs. Not worth the price by a long shot.
