A great sounding ribbon mic that you can use with any preamp regardless of its gain.

The Woodpecker Active Ribbon Microphone from Blue is one of the most interesting and beautiful microphones you'll ever lay eyes or ears on. With a stunning exotic wood finish and unique active circuitry, beneath its gorgeous exterior, the Woodpecker is a precision-crafted recording tool. Combines the low noise and superb detail of Blue's renowned Class-A discrete handmade electronics with the bold sound of a hand-tuned aluminum ribbon pressure-gradient transducer.

The Woodpecker microphone was designed to provide the smooth, intimate sound associated with the most sought-after vintage ribbon microphones. With its focused mid-range, and outstanding bass response, the Woodpecker mic captures the essence of any recorded sound. It also excels at ambient recording and capturing room tone with the most intimate detail - whether for rock drums, guitars or vocals - any application where some natural space in the recording is desired.

Usually, ribbon mics require preamps with at least 60-70dB of gain. Not so with the Woodpecker. Its active design allows you to use it with any preamp, so you don't have to replace yours in order to have the acknowledged musicality of a ribbon transducer.

The Woodpecker microphone package includes a custom made, solid brass shockmount and wood storage box.

Record with the inherent musicality of ribbon mics as only Blue Microphones can deliver.

Comments about BLUE Woodpecker Active Ribbon Microphone:

Short review: The other guy who wrote a review was a weirdo,so just a down to earth understandable review: Did some tracks with vocals and it was very accurate and not as sensitive as i've read it to be by any means. Recorded it with a delta blues amp from a few feet back at a low level and it sounded very nice and clear with a definite punctuation on the mid-range. Very high quality and a very good mic that is definitely worth trying out. Only reason this is not all 5's is because this is not a "one mic and i'm done" microphone. definitely worth a shot, though.

Comments about BLUE Woodpecker Active Ribbon Microphone:

I've had this mic for a couple of years. It is a active Ribbon and as such has more high end than passive models I've used. It picks up from both sides so if your room sounds awful, it will be picked up in your recording. Conversely, if your room sounds great it adds some nice depth to the recording. I've used it mostly on vocals and electric and acoustic guitars. Solidly built and I think it looks classy. Not too big and heavy that you need a monster stand for it. It has a slight noise floor, due to it being active. If you are doing solo nylon string or some other solo instrument, this might not be the best choice. For ensemble recording the noise is slight and not really a issue. Good tonality and it doesn't seem overly sensitive to plosives or high spl.

Comments about BLUE Woodpecker Active Ribbon Microphone:

I have been recording with this mic for about a year, mainly for male vocal. I find the tonal characteristics to be a bit boxy but somehow alluring compared to my goto Rode NTK. This is a very hot mic. It would be great for ambient recording as it picks up every whisper in the room. The first mic I received was in pieces when I opened the box. I later found a small screw that apparently had fallen out in transit. The support staff at Blue were very helpful and courteous. They restored my faith in my purchase. The look and feel is a mixed bag. The wood and gold are cool, but somewhat cheesy. All that glitters is not gold. But I am a fool...I am glad to have this mic in my locker. It has a unique character and I hope to find a good use for it soon. I have been experimenting with using it in conjunction with with other vocal mics and mixing for effect. I have not yet used it on acoustic instruments, but it's on my radar. All in all I am pleased to own this unique bird.
